Every year we have big anti-bullying assemblies and do lots of lessons on how to be kind, respect others, understand differences, and resolve conflicts through communication instead of violence or meanness. Any student caught bullying faces serious consequences like detention or even suspension. We're all encouraged to be "upstanders" and speak up if we ever see bullying happening.One of the coolest new safety things at our school is this app that lets you report any concerns anonymously right from your smartphone or computer. So if you ever see anything unsafe, suspicious, or that makes you uncomfortable, you can quickly and discreetly let the right people know. Some examples could be witnessing someone vaping in the bathroom, hearing a student make threats, or noticing any kind of abuse, violence, or illegal activity. The reports go straight to the principal and schoolcounselors who can immediately investigate and take proper action.I feel so fortunate to attend a school that makes safety their top priority and has so many awesome programs in place. It allows me to just be a kid - running, playing, learning, and making memories without constant worry or fear. Every child deserves to feel safe, protected, and able to thrive. School should be a place where we can learn, have fun with our friends, and not have to worry about bad things happening.There are lots of different ways that schools try to keep kids safe. One of the biggest is having rules that everybody needs to follow. At my school, we have rules about being respectful to others, not fighting or bullying, and listening to teachers and staff. We also have rules about where we can go during the school day to make sure we don't wander off somewhere unsafe. Breaking any of these rules can lead to consequences like detention or even suspension.Another way schools keep us safe is by controlling who can come into the building. All the doors stay locked during the day except for the main entrance. Anyone who wants to enter has to go through the office first and get a visitor badge. There's even a security guard at our school to check people in. Students also aren't allowed to just open doors from the inside to let people in. We have to follow those rules too.My school also has procedures in place for emergencies like fires, severe weather, or if there was ever a dangerous person trying to enter the building. We do practice drills every few months so we know exactly what to do. During a fire drill, wehave to line up quickly and quietly, then follow our teacher outside to our designated meeting spot away from the building. For severe weather, we practice taking shelter inside the school in the hallways away from windows. In case of an intruder, we practice hiding in locked classrooms, staying low and quiet. I'm glad my school takes the time to make sure we're prepared.At home, my parents teach me a lot about safety too. They always know where I am and who I'm with. They remind me not to go anywhere with strangers or people I don't know. I'm also not allowed to answer the door at home if they aren't there. We have a family code word that anyone trying to pick me up unexpectedly would have to know. Internet safety is important too - I can only use kid-friendly websites or apps when I'm online, and I'm never allowed to share personal information.Overall, I feel really safe at my school. I know there are a lot of smart procedures and caring people in place to protect me. As kids, it's also our job to follow the rules. If we see anyone breaking a rule or doing something unsafe, we need to tell a teacher or staff member right away. Looking out for each other is the best way we can all stay safe.I hope schools keep making safety an even bigger priority. Maybe more security cameras, lockdown doors on classrooms,or safety classes for kids would help too.
