Period 1: Reading—The Cat That VanishedGoals●To learn about fantasy literature●To learn to read with strategiesProcedures▇Warming up by learning about “fantasy”Hello, class! We have come to Module 2 FantasyLiterature—Philip Pullman. But what is fantasy? Who is Philip Pullman?Fantasy is a genre of art, literature, film, television, and music that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of either plot, theme, setting, or all three. The genre is generally distinguished from science fiction and horror by overall look, feel, and theme of the individual work, though there is a great deal of overlap between the three (collectively known as speculative fiction). In its broadest sense, fantasy covers works by many writers, artists, and musicians, from ancient myths and legends, to many recent works embraced by a wide audience today. As with other forms of speculative fiction, actions and events in fantasy very often differ from those possible in consensus reality. In many cases, especially in older works of fantasy but in many modern works as well, this is explained by means of divine intervention, magic, or other supernatural forces. In other cases, most frequently in works of modern fantasy in the high fantasy subgenre, the story might take place in a fantasy world that is wholly different from our own, complete with distinct laws of nature that permit magic.▇Warming up by learning about “Philip Pullman”Philip Pullman was born in Norwich on 19th October 1946. The early part of his life was spent travelling all over the world, because his father and then his stepfather were both in the Royal Air Force. He spent part of his childhood in Australia, where he first met the wonders of comics, and grew to love Superman and Batman in particular. From the age of 11, he lived in North Wales, having moved back to Britain. It was a time when children were allowed to roam anywhere, to play in the streets, to wander over the hills, and he took full advantage of it. His English teacher, Miss Enid Jones, was a big influence on him, and he still sends her copies of his books. After he left school he went to Exeter College, Oxford, to read English. He did a number of odd jobs for a while, and then moved back to Oxford to become a teacher. He taught at various middle schools for twelve years, and then moved to Westminster College, Oxford, to be a part-time lecturer. He taught courses on the Victorian novel and on the folk tale, and also a course examining how words and pictures fit together. He eventually left teaching in order to write full-time.His first published novel was for adults, but he began writing for children when he was a teacher. Some of his novels were based on plays he wrote for his school pupils, such as The Ruby In The Smoke.Philip still lives in Oxford, and he writes in a shed at the bottom of his garden. The shed contains two comfortable chairs (one for writing in, one for sitting at the computer in), several hundred books, a six-foot-long stuffed rat which took a part in his play Sherlock Holmes and the Limehouse Horror, a guitar, a saxophone, as well as the computer, decorated with dozens of brightly coloured artificial flowers attached to it by Blu-Tack.Blu-Tack plays a big part in Philip Pullman's writing process. With it he sticks to the wall pictures, notes, posters, reminders, postcards, book jackets, anything that will stay there.Another product of technology that Philip can't do without is Post-it Notes, the smallest yellow ones in particular. They are very useful for planning the shape of a story: he writes a brief sentence summarising a scene on one of them, and then puts them on a very big piece of paper which he can fill with up to sixty or more different scenes, moving them around to get the best order.Philip Pullman believes firmly in the virtues of healthy exercise and a moderate diet - for other people. It makes them feel virtuous, and makes them feel good if not happy. The most exercise he normally takes is unscrewing the top of the whisky bottle. If he liked the taste of tobacco, he would smoke vigorously. He is fond of sport, andplays it by watching television. He is a big fan of Neighbours, but that is the only soap he watches, as Neighbours gives him quite enough to think about. He is married to Jude. Their son Jamie is a viola player, and their younger son Tom studies music at university. As far as he can tell, Philip Pullman is moderately harmless and useful. He would like to carry on doing what he's doing now, and there seems no reason why he shouldn't, but if it suddenly became against the law to write stories, he would break the law without a second's hesitation.▇Before you readNow let’s go to page 11 to read first His Dark Materials and The Cat That Vanished. But first please go over the word list for this module, paying attention to the pronunciation of the word, the relationship between its pronunciation and its spelling.▇While you readWhile reading try to cut/ the sentences into thought groups, blacken the predicates, underline the useful expressions and darken the connectives.▇After you readCopy all the useful expressions into your Expression Book and make your own sentences with them.■Reading the text again to fill in the necessary information■Closing down by reading about “The Cat That Vanished”began with The Golden Compass. Then she turned away and went across the road, towards the bushes just past the trees, and there she stopped.B: What about Will? What was he doing?A: Still watching. All of a sudden, Will saw the cat behave strangely.B: how did she behave?■Reading and retelling a fantasy storyYou have done a very good job. Lewis writes in an essay named Three Ways of Writing for Children. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. Firstly, they mean that we mustn't do anything likely to give children fears, and secondly, they want to keep out of their minds that they are born into a world of death, violence (暴力), wounds and evil (邪恶). C.S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second. He goes on to comment, "Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel (残酷的) enemies, let them at least hear of brave fighters and heroic courage. By limiting your child to perfect and nice stories of child life in which nothing alarming ever happens, they would fail to face fears and hardships.〞 "It would be nice ,〞 he continues, "if no little boy in bed ever hears a frightening sound. But if he is to be frightened, I think St. George, or any bright champion in armor (盔甲), is a better comfort than the idea of the police.〞Bruno Bettelheim, a wellknown child psychologist, also points out that fantasy stories provide children with a valuable education about good and evil. He believes that all children have many personal fantasies filled with fears and fantasy stories comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.A good fantasy suggests rather than teaches possible answers to life. It's believed that reading fantasies quickens the ability to get and put ideas from books to reality. It's what good literature does - it makes life larger.语篇解读:本文作者反驳了一些反对儿童阅读奇幻文学的错误观点 ,并强调了阅读奇幻文学的必要性 .1.According to the first paragraph, C.S. Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born in England in 1965, and wrote her first story at the age of six.She was in her mid20s when the idea for the Harry Potter novels came to her, during a long train ride.By the end of that journey, she says, the character of Harry and the school for wizards which he attended were more or less fully formed in her mind. He was a contemporary of many modernist poetic movements, but he wasn't associated (与……有联系) with any particular group of poets. He stuck to his own literary beliefs, and as a result, he attracted a good deal of criticism from the literary world. But, it is just because he was such a person and his voice was so original that Frost became so beloved. If you are to choose one of his poems and read it aloud on a busy street, we are sure that many people will recognize the poem immediately as Frost's.Mending Wall, which is the first poem in North of Boston, Frost's second book of poetry, is one of his most popular poems. It is a poem about two neighbors who fix a rock wall that lies between their homes. "I〞 want to destroy the wall, and the "neighbor〞wants to leave it standing. We just can't get enough of walls, can we? People love boundaries (界线). We love them when we're little, protecting our precious toys from our troublesome (令人烦恼的) brothers and sisters. As we get older, we begin to throw around the gentle term "personal space〞 , as in "GET OUT OF MY ROOM !〞 In college, we really learn how the idea of "My house is your house〞 doesn't always result in happy roommate relationships. After we become adults with good jobs and a lot of cool things, we often put up fences, gates, walls, or doors to protect our stuff and keep the peace.Walls help us protect ourselves, but their downside is that they often keep people from communicating with each other. Mending Wall makes us take a look at how we use our walls and boundaries, and why we use them the way we do. This poem sends a wakeup call to the universe. There are walls between our hearts. .9.What can we learn about Robert Frost?A.His writing style is special.B.His first poem is about life.C.He often criticized other poets.D.He joined many poetic movements. 这说明他的写作风格特别 ,容易识别 . 10.In Paragraph 3, what does the author want to show?A.Sharing with others brings us happiness.B.There seem lots of walls in our life.C.Walls let people know about themselves.D.Personal space is important to everyone.解析:选B 推理判断题 .作者对弗罗斯物的名作?修墙?进行简单介绍后 ,在第三段描述了这样一个事实:人们从小到大不断地树立各种围墙 .11.The third paragraph is developed by .A.space B.exampleC.time D.comparison解析:选C 写作手法题 .在第三段作者按照时间顺序展开全段 ,指出了人们从孩童时期到长大成人 ,不断地建立 "心墙〞 .12.The underlined word "downside〞in the last paragraph can be replaced by " 〞.A.true use B.old wayC.negative part D.major difference解析:选C 词义猜想题 . 因此downside此处有 "缺乏之处〞的意思 .[课文对译]The Cat That VanishedWill was stupefied with exhaustion, and he might have gone on to the north, or he might have laid his head on the grass under one of those trees and slept; but as he stood trying to clear his head, he saw a cat.She was a tabby, like Moxie. She padded out of a garden on the Oxford side of the road, where Will was standing. Will put down his shopping bag and held out his hand, and the cat came up to rub her head against his knuckles, just as Moxie did. Of course, every cat behaved like that, but all the same Will felt such a longing to turn for home that tears scalded his eyes.Eventually this cat turned away. This was night, and there was a territory to patrol, there were mice to hunt. She padded across the road and towards the bushes just beyond the hornbeam trees, and there she stopped. Will, still watching, saw the cat behave curiously. She reached out a paw to pat something in the air in front of her, something quite invisible to Will. Then she leapt backwards, back arched and fur on end, tail held out stiffly. Will knew catbehaviour. He watched more alertly as the cat approached the spot again, just an empty patch of grass between the hornbeams and the bushes of a garden hedge, and patted the air once more.Again she leapt back, but less far and with less alarm this time. After another few seconds of sniffing, touching, whiskertwitching, curiosity overcame wariness. The cat stepped forward, and vanished. Will blinked. Then he stood still, close to the trunk of the nearest tree, as a truck came round the circle and swept its lights over him. When it had gone past he crossed the road, keeping his eyes on the spot where the cat had been investigating. It wasn't easy, because there was nothing to fix on, but when he came to the place and cast about to look closely, he saw it.At least, he saw it from some angles. It looked as if someone had cut a patch out of the air, about two metres from the edge of the road, a patch roughly square in shape and less than a metre across. If you were level with the patch so that it was edgeon, it was nearly invisible, and it was completely invisible from behind. You could only see it from the side nearest the road, and you couldn't see it easily even from there, because all you could see through it was exactly the same kind of thing that lay in front of it on this side: a patch of grass lit by a street light. But Will knew without the slightest doubt that that patch of grass on the other side was in a different world. He couldn't possibly have said why. He knew it at once, as strongly as he knew that fire burned and kindness was good. He was looking at something profoundly alien. And for that reason alone, it enticed him to stoop and look further. What he saw made his head swim and his heart thump harder, but he didn't hesitate: he pushed his shopping bag through, and then scrambled through himself, through the hole in the fabric of this world and into another. He found himself standing under a row of trees. But not hornbeam trees: these were tall palms, and they were growing, like the trees in Oxford, in a line along the grass. But this was the centre of a broad boulevard, and at the side of the boulevard was a line of cafés and small shops, all brightly lit, all open, and all utterly silent and empty beneath a sky thick with stars. The hot night was laden with the scent of flowers and with the salt smell of the sea. Will looked around carefully. Behind him the full moon shone down over a distant prospect of great green hills, and on the slopes at the foot of the hills there were houses with rich gardens and an open parkland with groves of trees and the white gleam of a classical temple.Just beside him was that bare patch in the air, as hard to see from this side as from the other, but definitely there. He bent to look through and saw the road in Oxford, his own world. He turned away with a shudder: whatever this new world was, it had to be better than what he'd just left. With a dawning lightheadedness, the feeling that he was dreaming but awake at the same time, he stood up and looked around for the cat, his guide.,消失的猫威尔累得脑子都木了 ,他本可以继续向北走 ,也可以在某棵树下头枕草地昏昏睡去;但是 ,正当他站在那儿 ,试图让头脑清醒些的时候 ,他看见了一只猫 .
