语篇提能Ⅰ.阅读理解Across the United States, there are several places where two independent towns grew together to become one city — but kept both their names.Winston-Salem is one of them. It's a mid-sized city in what's called the plateau (high land), between the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a relatively new place, founded early last century. It's home to the nation's biggest open-air tobacco market. The giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company's headquarters is in Winston-Salem, and Winston is the name of one of Reynolds' best-known cigarette brands. Fast-growing Winston soon surrounded the much older town of Salem,so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place. From a historical and tourist point of view,Salem,or Old Salem, as it's called today, is the interesting and unusual part of town.Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians greatly valued women's work and brainpower. In fact, one of the nation's oldest boarding schools for young women —the Moravians' Salem Academy founded in 1772 — is still in operation.Over the years,Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a non-profit group began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what's called a living history museum, with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th-century houses, taverns and Moravian dormitory buildings just seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper inWinston-Salem.The historic community is booming again. Just as R.J. Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making cigarettes across the town, Old Salem is generating about $15 million a year in tourism revenue and donations.1.From the passage we can know that ________.A. Winston-Salem is the name of a cityB. Salem is home to the tobacco marketC. the city Winston-Salem has two namesD. Old Salem is the name of a tobacco brand答案与解析A推理判断题。

语篇提能阅读理解ADid anyone find the names of “Great Britain”,“the United Kingdom”,“England” and “the British commonwealth” which have the same meaning? Strictly speaking, these names all refer to something different. None of them are exactly the same as any of the others. The British isles refer to the main islands and several thousand small ones as well, which you can see on the map. Great Britain, or Britain, refers to the larger of the two main islands. But the word “Britain” is often used as a short form for the United Kingdom or you call it the UK.Now as for England, it refers simply to the largest of the three countries on the island of Great Britain. The United Kingdom is the name of the state and the official name of the country, which many people popularly refer to England. Finally, the Britain commonwealth is the usual name for what is left of the British Empire (帝国). This change shows the weakening of British Empire and the rising of the national liberation movements throughout the world today.1. According to the passage, we know that ________.A. Great Britain has the same meaning as BritainB. all the names refer to EnglandC. the United Kingdom has the same meaning as Britain or EnglandD. all the names in the first paragraph have the same meaning答案与解析A推理判断。
高二英语人教版选修8语篇阅读提能练(含答案解析)(建议用时:30分钟)Ⅰ阅读理解AAnyone who has ever studied a foreign language knows thatrepetition is the key to any real progress. To attain a high level of fluency ina second language requires hours and hours of work.If this soundstedious,_then it’s because it often is.But there are creative ways to breakthe boredom of studying. One of these is reading poetry.Step1:Choose a poemDecide which poem you would like to use to help you study.Choosing the right poem is important.Make sure it’s long enough to have real substance in it, but avoid those longer than a page, at least at first.Keep it simple. Also, it’s probably better to choose a more modern poem.Just as Shakespearean English confuses most native English speakers, other languages have their own versions of oldfashioned vocabulary that is not used in the modern context.Step 2:Read the poemWhen you first work on the poem, don’t worry about immediately translating it or understanding it fully.Just read it.Relax, and let the words wash over you.Allow the rhythm to come naturally.Pay attention to the poetic structure—where the words are on the page, where the pauses seem to occur, etc.You will be able to infer the general meaning of the poem after reading it several times, and that’s enough.Deeper understanding will come later.Step 3:TranslateNow that you’ve experienced the poem naturally, it’s time to break it down and study it more closely. There are several ways to do this, depending on how proficient your language skills are.For a lower level of difficulty, simply find an English translation of the poem, either online or at your local library. Most famous foreign poems have already been translated into English several times. For a higher level of difficulty, you can attempt to translate the poem yourself, with the help of a dictionary, before you look at an official translation.1.The underlined word “tedious”in the first paragraph is the closest in meaning to “________”.A.exciting B.boringC.confusing D.astonishingB解析:词义猜测题。

语篇提能阅读理解ABig Ben, the Queen, a plate of ham and eggs — no, no, no. If you'relooking for a symbol of Britain, only one thing passesthe test — the umbrella. Now, I know what you're thinking — we have rain in China and we have umbrellas too. Certainly, I will never forget the way it rained when I lived in Beijing: the streets became instant (立即的 ) rivers and the sky flashed with lightning for hours on end. People dove (冲) for cover under bin bags, the shops were emptied of their plastic ponchos (斗篷 ) within seconds, and I found myself soaked ( 浸透 ) from head to foot, mypoorly-chosen skirt and T-shirt now totally seethrough-.This would never have happened in Britain. For one thing, during my year in Beijing, it only really rained about 10 times. But although we never get a Beijing-style washout in London, the drizzle (毛毛雨) that does fall is all but constant. Even when the sky is perfectly blue, you can be sure it's going to cloud over and start drizzling again within the hour. And when it does, there is chaos. Trains stop, drains (下水道 ) block, and buses break down as if this was the first time the local authorities had seen this wet stuff coming out of the clouds. So — as with so many things in the UK— it's up to ordinary people tosort themselves out. No selfrespecting- Briton will ever leave home without his“ brolly as” the— umbrella is affectionately亲(切地 ) known.A brolly has hundreds of uses, even on rare rain- free days. A real gentleman of London will use his umbrella as a walking stick. A traditional game of cricket (板球 ) can be played using an umbrella as a bat 球(棒 ). Nordo you ever have to be afraid of robbers — your umbrella doubles as adefensive 防(卫的 ) weapon. There is no brolly more British than my own. But it's not from Londonor Manchester or anywhere in the UK. It was a gift from my Chineseteacher — in Beijing. How fitting that my No. 1 symbol of Britishness — like almosteverything in Britain — was made in China.1. The author mentioned her rainy weather experience in Beijing toshow that ________.A. many foreigners have embarrassing moments living in BeijingB. the rain in Beijing is usually much heavier than the rain in LondonC.British people are more used to rainy weather than Chinese peopleD.both Beijingers and Londoners have unpleasant experienceswithsudden rain答案与解析C推理判断题。

BOne Sunday a few of us decided to take advantage of the first sunny day we'd had for ages to take a trip down to the coast to visit the penguins again. Last time I went down there a couple of months ago and it was a cloudy cold day. Sunday couldn't have been more different — clear skies and sunshine made it feel like summer, although it was still- 25℃.Six of us drove to the coast. It was the first time we'd been off the base on our own without our field assistant, so it had a slightly different feeling — more like a few friends going to the seaside than an Antarctic field trip! When we reached Windy Creek, we luckily caught sight of quite a few small flying seabirds, which are seldom seen there.Once on the sea ice we found that some of the more curious penguins had wandered over from the main group to come and check us out. We'd been told that then they were nursing their chicks and they would be more careful and nervous than last time, but_that_didn't_seem_to_be_the_case. We walked across to the main group which were stretched for a couple of miles along the coast. We sat down for some sandwichesand soon foundourselves surrounded by many curious observers. Without any attackers onland, they were very brave and came within a meter of us to pose for photos. Before heading back, we spend a few hours on the sea ice watching the penguins and their chicks, which had grown dramatically since our lastvisit.语篇解读本文是记叙文。
