Unit 2 Asking for Directions

I. Useful patterns related to the topic

Showing the way:

Go straight. / Go ahead.

Turn right / left.

Turn right / left at the second turning.

It is on the right / left.

Asking for directions:

Excuse me. Where is the …?

Is there a … near here / in the neighborhood?

How can I get to the …?

Could you tell me how to get to the …?

Could you please tell me which stop to get off at?

Giving directions:

Go straight ahead and it’s on your right / left.

Take the first turning on the left and walk straight.

Go on for about 100 meters. It's on your left side. You can't miss it.

It’s only 2 bus stops. You may go there on foot.

1. direction n

1). the course on which a person or thing moves or is aimed

(人和物运动的) 方向

e.g. She has a good / bad sense of direction and never / always gets lost.

He drove away in the direction of (≡ towards) Boston.

2). (usu. pl) a set of instructions on what to do or how to get somewhere

e.g. He gave me directions to the station.

Follow the directions on the medicine bottle.

3). Management; supervision; guidance; control

e.g. We did the work under the direction of Mr. Wang.

direct v.

1). to tell someone the way to a place

e.g. I’m lost. Can you direct me to the station?

2). manage sb. / sth.; control

e.g. He directed the building of the new bridge.

3). to order

e.g. The policeman directed the crowd to move back.

direct adj. adv.

e.g. What’ the most direct way to the town? (adj.)

He gave a direct answer to my question. (adj.)

The next flight doesn’t go direct to Beijing. (adv.)

2. principal n. adj.

1). the head of some organizations esp. universities, college and schools

e.g. The famous chemist is the new principal of this college.

2). most important; main; chief

e.g. The principal character in the story is a young artist.

3. lift n. v.

1). box-like device moving people or goods from one floor to another

e.g. Our classroom is on the tenth floor. Let’s take the lift.

2). free ride in private vehicle 搭便车;免费搭车

e.g. Can you give me a lift to the airport?

3). lifting; being lifted 抬;举

e.g. Give him a lift; he’s too small to see anything.

4). a feeling of increased strength, higher spirits, etc 振奋;鼓舞

e.g. I was given a lift when I heard that I passed my exams.

lift v. raise sth to a higher level or position

e.g. Stop looking at the ground; lift your head up.

4. turn v. n.

1). go around

e.g. Turn the hands of the clock until they point to nine o’clock.

She turned the key in the lock.

2). to bend around; look around

e.g. He turned and waved towards us.

3). to cause to change direction

e.g. Turn right here and then left at the end of the street.

take turns We take turns at cooking.

5. reach v. n.

v. to arrive at; get to

e.g. They will reach Beijing tonight.

The news only reached me yesterday.

He reached the end of the novel.

The boy reached out for a piece of cake.

n. the distance that one can touch or travel

e.g. Put the medicine bottle beyond the reach of the children.

The banana was within the reach of the little boy and so he could get

it easily.
