A large dinner party is being given in an up-country station by a colonial official and his wife. The guests are army and government officers and their wives, and an American naturalist. At one side of the long table, a spirited discussion springs up between a young girl and an army officer. The girl insists women have long outgrown the jumping-on-a-chair-at-the-sight-of-a-mouse era, and that they are not as anxious as their grandmothers were. The officer says they are, arguing women haven't the actual nerve control of men."A woman's reaction in any crisis," the officer says, "is to scream. And while a man may feel like it, he has that ounce more of control than a woman has."The American scientist does not join in the argument but sits and watches the faces of the other guests. As he stares, he sees a slight, though strange look of anxiety come over the face of the hostess. With a small gesture she summons the servant standing behind her chair. She whispers to him. The servant's eyes widen. He turns quickly and leaves the room. No one else sees this, nor the servant when he puts a bowl of milk on the balcony outside the glass doors. The American understands. In India, milk in a bowl means only one thing. It is bait for a snake. He realizes there is a cobra in the room. The American's eyes move across the room but he sees nothing. He realizes the snake can only be in one place—under the table. His first reaction is to jump back and warn the others. But he knows any sudden movement will frighten the cobra and it will strike. He speaks quickly, the quality of his voice so arresting that it quietens everyone. "I want to know just what control everyone at this table has. I will count three hundred—that's five minutes —and not one of you is to move a single muscle. Now! Ready!"The 20 people sit like stone images while he counts. He is saying "…two hundred and eighty..." when, out of the corner of his eye, he sees the snake emerge and make for the bowl of milk. Four or five screams ring out as he jumps to slam shut the balcony doors."There is your proof!" the host says. "A man has just shown us real control.""Just a minute," the American says, turning to his hostess, "How did you know that cobra was in the room?"A faint smile comes across the woman's face as she replies. "Because it was lying across my foot."(1)What is the argument between the army officer and the young girl about?A.Whether women are afraid of mice.B.Whether men are calmer than women.C.Whether men are cleverer than women.D.Whether women would make suitable soldiers.(2)Why is the servant asked to put out some milk?A.To play a trick.B.To serve the guests.C.To attract the snake.D.To feed the hostess's pet.(3)Why does the scientist suggest the guests play a game?A.He doesn't want anyone to panic.B.He intends to test the officer's theory.C.He sees there was a snake in the room.D.He wants to entertain the other guests.(4)What does the author imply through the hostess's final statement?A.The army officer's opinion is wrong.B.The hostess understood the American's intention.C.The American was surprised by the snake's presence.D.The hostess has had previous experience dealing with snakes.6.Have you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)? If not, do not feel bad. Most Americans do not know of the fruit, though it is native to the United States.Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods. A pawpaw is a tropical-like fruit that grows on trees found all over the eastern United States. It's also the largest fruit native to the US.It is similar to a typical mango in size. It has a dull green-colored skin, and a soft, almost-creamy orange inside. The pawpaw was not sold commercially in the past. The fruit requires a very special environment-low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it came from.Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers haveorganized "pawpaw festivals" to reintroduce people to the food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws. There were pawpaw jams, pies, gelato(冰淇淋)and beer. Michael Judd helped organize the Maryland pawpaw festival.Farmers are trying to grow kinds of pawpaws that will be easier to ship and sell commercially. Donna and Jim Davis are pawpaw farmers in Westminster, Maryland. They said that they purchased their pawpaw trees in the 1990s and now sell the fruit at farmer's markets and online.(1)What can we know about the pawpaw according to the text?A.Its harvest season lasts long.B.It grows in Europe originally.C.It has already returned to its former position.D.It used to be well-received in North America.(2)What limited the pawpaw to being sold commercially in the past?A.It was unknown to the world.B.It's hard to grow, store and transport.C.It has similar taste with typical mangoes.D.The planters were unwilling to grow them for low profits.(3)Why do farmers hold "pawpaw festivals"?A.To show lots of delicious food to people.B.To make the pawpaw known to people again.C.To introduce people to a completely new fruit.D.To tell people the forgotten history about the fruit.(5)What is the best title for the text?A.The History of Pawpaws.B.How to Grow Pawpaws.C.The Comeback of Pawpaws.D.The Origin of Pawpaw Festival.四、七选五(本题共计 1 小题,共计5分)7. Still no luck? Try think about sheep jumping over a fence. If you are still awake, take a sleeping pill. People who take pills often become dependent on the drugs. So you lie awake knowing that the new workday will soon arrive. If you have been in such condition for at least one month, you may have primary insomnia(失眠症).A new study has found that you might fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer if you try “cerebral hypothermia.” It is not a complex medical process. It just means cooling down your brain. Eric Nofzinger and Naniel Buysse from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School led the study. They examined twelve people who had sleeping problems. Twelve others had no sleeping problems. Each of them wore a soft plastic cap on their head at bedtime. The caps had tubes inside filled with water. The researchers moved the water through the tubes and then changed the temperature of the water. Other studies showed that people who had sleeping problems often had more chemical reactions in the front of their brain. The researchers thought cooling down the brain might help.On the first two nights of testing, the patients wore caps with no water. On the next two nights, the caps were worn, but the water was not cooled. Then the researchers cooled the water a little for another two nights. On the final two nights of the study, the temperature of the water was made much cooler. The researchers found that the water caps didn’ t help the patients until the temperature was about 14℃. Most of the patients fell asleep faster and slept better when the coolest water was moving around their head.Dr Nfzinger and Dr. Buysse noted that this was only the beginning of the brain temperature study. But they believed they had discovered something important that needed more research.21. The first paragraph is written to _________.A. explain how serious insomnia is.B. bring forward the topic of the passage.C. tell us the causes of sleeping problems.D. tell us the danger of having sleeping problems.22 From the passage we know that “cerebral hypothermia” is actually _________.A. a complex medical process.B. a psychological treatment.C. a simple physical treatment.D. a difficult scientific theory.23. In the study, researchers helped people fall asleep faster through _________.A. increasing chemical reactions in the front of their brain.B. making them feel safe with a cap on their headC. asking them to drink water to cool downD. lowering the temperature of their brain24. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A. The cause of the study.B. The function of the caps.C. Some details of the study.D. People’s reactions to the study.BShakespeare’s Birthplace and Exhibition of Shakespeare’s WorldWelcome to the world-famous house where William Shakespeare was born in l564 and where he grew up. It might understand more than you think.A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩).In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive.Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return!28. From paragraph 2 we know that _______ .A. animals are as clever as human beingsB. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzeesC. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skillsD. dogs have similar learning abilities as 3-year-old children29. Both experiments show that_______ .A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands rightB. Rico can recognize different things including toysC. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematicsD. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them30. Which of the following statements is true?A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities.B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training.C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects.D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands.31. What does the writer want to tell us?A. To train your dog.B. To talk to your dog.C. To be friendly to your dog.D. To be careful with your dog.DThe Peales were a famous family of American artists.Charles Willson Peale is best remembered for his portraits of leading figures of the American Revolution. He painted portraits(肖像) of Franklin and Jefferson and over a dozen of George Washington. His life-size portrait of his sons Raphaelle and Titian was so realistic that George Washington reportedly once tipped his hat to the figures in the picture.Charles Willson Peale gave up painting in his middle age and devoted his life to the Peale museum, which he founded in Philadelphia. The world’s first popular museum of art and natural science mainly covered paintings by Peale and his family as well as displays of animals in their natural settings.Peale found the animals himself and found a method to make the exhibits more lifelike. The museum’s most popular display was the skeleton (骷髅)of a huge, extinct elephant, which Peale unearthed on a New York farm in 1801.Three of Peale’s seventeen children were also famous artists.Raphaelle Peale often painted still lives of flowers, fruit, and cheese. His brother Rembrandt studied under his father and painted portraits of many noted people, including one of George Washington.Another brother, Rubens Peale, painted mostly landscapes and portraits.James Peale, the brother of Charles Willson Peale, specialized in miniatures (小画像).His daughter Sarah Miriam Peale was probably the first professional female portrait painter in America.32.The author mentions in Paragraph 1 that Washington tipped his hat to the figures in the painting to show that ________.A.Charles Willson Peale’s painting was very lifelikeB.Washington respected Charles Willson Peale’s workC.Washington was friendly with Raphaelle and Titian PealeD.the painting of the two brothers was very large33.T he underlined word “unearthed” is closest in meaning to“ ______”.A.showed B.invented C.dug up D.looked over 34.Which of the following is NOT the child of Charles Willson Peale?A.Titian Peale.B.Rubens Peale.C.Raphaelle Peale.D.Sarah Miriam Peale.35.The author’s attitude toward the Peales is in general _______.A.puzzled B.admiring C.excited D.disappointed 三完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5 分,满分30分)I was tired and hungry after a long day of work. He moved from Kentucky to Indiana when I was seven. We reached our new home about the time the state came into the Union. It was a wild area, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. I grew up there. There were some so-called schools, but what was required of a teacher never went beyond “reading, writing, and adding.” If a stranger supposed to understand Latin happen ed to livefor a time in the area, he was looked on as wizard (奇才). There was simply nothing to excite a desire for education. Of course, when I grew up, I did not know much. Still, somehow, I could read, write, and add, but that was all. The advance I have now made is on this store of education, which I have picked up under the pressure of necessity.36. When the writer was a child ____ .A. his grandfather died in the state of KentuckyB. his family settled down in the countryside of IndianaC. How did the writer look at his early education?A. He believed he met the school requirements.B. He thought he was well-educated.C. He thought it was not satisfactory.D. He believed he was poorly educated.40. At the time he wrote, the writer ____ .A. had to learn to read, write and addB. found it necessary to receive advanced educationC. was probably fairly well-educatedD. was dissatisfied with his level of educationBDACCB.To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully un der y our control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still before his class:he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality (音色) and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about. The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn’t meanthat he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words eachtime he plays a certain part, even his movements and the w ays in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand (预先). What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play:they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.41. What is the text about?A. How to become a good teacher.B. What a good teacher should do outside the classroom.C. What teachers and actors could learn from each other.D. The similarities and differences between a teacher’s work and an actor’s.42. The word “audience” in the fourth paragraph means ____ .A. studentsB. people who watch a playC. people who not on the stageD. people who listen to something43. A good teacher ____.A. knows how to hold the interest of his studentsB. must have a good voiceC. knows how to act on the stageD. stands or sits still while teaching44. In what way is a teacher’s work different from an actor’s?A. The teacher must learn everything by heart.B. He knows how to control his voice better than an actor.C. He has to deal with unexpected situations.D. He has to use more facial expressions.45. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that ____.A. students can move around in the classroomB. students must keep silent while theatre audience needn’tC. no memory work is needed for the studentsD. the students must t ake part in their teachers’ playDAACD第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,共15分)A good book can be satisfying. In my opinion, the most effective way is to learn lessons by heart. If you can recite(背诵)the text and write it out, you’ve learned it fairly well. And if you can tell, in your own words, what the lesson says you’ re a very successful learner indeed. Your English will be quite perfect. This is a difficult task. However, if you try to learn by heart only part of each lesson, you’ll find it not half so hard as you might have thought. Learning this way, you will make rapid progress. Of course, writing is also necessary. It helps you a lot on our way to success in English. Equally important is to feel the language. You should be able to laugh at jokes and be shocked at badnews. When using English, try to forget your mother tongue. Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way. So, never try to see English through translation.46.What's the meaning of "effective" in Chinese.A.合适的B.有效的C.重要的D.无用的47.In the writer’s opinion, the most effective way in learning English is ____.A.to practise speaking, writing and feeling itB.to forget your own native languageC.to translate everything into his own languageD.to memorize the English words and grammatical rules48.“Instead of helping you, your own language gets in your way.”This sentence means that memorizing your own language can ________.A.help you to study English wellB.stop you mastering EnglishC.make English easy to learnD.help you notice mistakes49. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave —and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid. Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you are sure you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potentialpowers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,〞said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet (子弹) — and stopped him cold.〞Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds. So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.5. To recommend people to develop more abilities.CAs Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood thatthe computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, andtold them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆).〞According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.9. The passage begins with two questions to ______.A. introduce the main topicB. show t he author’s altitudeC. describe how to use the InternetD. explain how to store information10. In transactive memory, people ______.A. keep the information in mindB. change the quantity of informationC. organize information like a computerD. remember how to find the information11. What is the effect of the Internet accordin g to Sparrow’s research?A. Weare using memory differently.B. We arebecoming more intelligent.C. We have poorer memories than before.D. We need a better way to access information.DPapa, as a son of a dirt-poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There’s so much to learn,〞he’d say. “Though we’re born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.〞 He was determined that none of his children would be denied (拒绝) an education. Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa a request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point. Then came the moment—the time to share the day’s new learning.Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen.“Felice,〞he’d say, “tell me what you learned today.〞“I learned that the population of Nepal is ...〞Silence.Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation (拯救) of the world would depend upon it. “The population of Nepal. Hmm. Well . . . 〞he’d say. “Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.〞And the wholefamily went on a search for Nepal. This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn. Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts. As children, we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together, sharing experiences and participating in one another’s education. And by looking at us, listening to us, respecting our input, affirming (肯定) our value, giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestionably our most influential teacher.Later during my training as a future teacher, I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were imparting (传授) what Papa had known all along—the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population of Nepal might prove useful.12. The underlined word “it〞in the second paragraph refers to “________〞A. one new thingB. a requestC. the newsD. some comment13. It can be learned from the passage that the author ________.A. enjoyed talking about newsB. knew very well about NepalC. felt regret about those wasted daysD. appreciated his father’s educational technique14.
