However, English writing has not received enough attention for a long time in rural middle schools. In order to develop students’ English writing ability, different people choose different methods, such as special English writing training ways, reciting classical compositions and so on. Factors hindering the improvement of s tudents’ English Writing ability3.1 On teachers’ part3.1.1 Insufficient number of qualified English teachersThe quantity of English teachers who reach the standard for educational background is insufficient. according to the latest statistics, there are 90.38% English teachers who have qualification for the post in China currently, 56.84% for the highschool（Feng Dexiang & Zhou Xiang, 2006: 35). English teachers in cities’ middle schools meet the standard for educational background basically. Therefore, there are considerable amount of English teachers do not meet the standard for level of education in rural middle schools. There are even some teachers who do not graduate from a regular college/university among these qualified ones. Therefore they take a passive attitud e toward their job. All these problems mentioned above have a negative effect on the improving of writing and the improvement of students’ writing ability, so government and society should improve rural English teacher’s income and living condition urgently.3.1.2 Improper teaching methodsThe teacher is the guilder of the writing class. What the teacher does affects students greatly. As the Chinese saying goes, interest is the best guide. The ways in which the teacher teaches writing is directly related to whether the students’ interest can be evoked. If the teacher often thinks of fresh ways to lead students in writing classes and of different topics that students are interested in. After he/she assigns the topic related to the model text to the students, he/she should undertake the burden to expand students’ line of thought.“The process approach to writing does not only pay attention to what students do while they are writing, it also attches great importance to what the students (and the teacher) do before they start writing and after they finish writing.” (Wang Qiang, 2000: 142)The most effective way is brainstorming. Brainstorming is an activity in which two or more students get together to discuss a given essay topic at the prewriting stage. “The first step in our lesson-planning process was brainstorming. Based on deferred judgment, brainstorming produces a creative atmosphere, encourages fanciful thinking, teaches receptive attitudes, and asks participants to condsider many alternatives.”(Knezevic & Scholl, 2002: 84) It is effective in bringing to the forefrontof the mind all the information one knows about a certain topic.The teacher should guide this activity properly. First he/she should let students think individually for about five minutes, which helps sharpen their minds and get something ready for writing. Then he/she should divide the whole class into groups of two to five students. The teacher asks them to talk with each other about the set topic. In this way, students exchange their opinions of the topic and their thought is expanded.Through brainstorming, students can generate good ideas concerning the essay topic. They are more stimulated than through pondering over the essay topic alone. Apart from these, brainstorming can make the writing class more lively and enjoyable; also, it can help increase the reader-awareness of the students in their writing process. Therefore, at the stage of pre-writing, through brainstorming, students can make clear idea of the essay’s appropriate form and content, which are essential elements of good writing.Drafting involves getting ideas onto paper in rough form. Revising involves editing and rejecting on the basis of evaluating what has been written to help the writing say what it intends to say. At these two phases, the teacher only needs to let students do themselves. But after students finish the writing and hand in their compositions, the teacher should provide more effective feedback other than the traditional written comments.4.1.3 Offering multiple feedback“T here are two kinds of feedback: the teacher’s oral feedback and the students’ peer feedback.”(Chen Weidong, 2002: 59) To provide oral feedback, the teachershould divide students into groups, and then talks with them respectively and gives comments. It provides better f eedback and saves the teacher’s evaluation time. Because we can speak more words than we can write per minute, thus, with oral feedback, more can be said than with written comments. Also, oral feedback is more efficient because the high level of concentration is maintained when the teacher is sitting face to face with the students. The teacher can point out the students’ weak point respectively. The students will also listen to the teacher carefully. And then rewrite their compositions according to the teac her’s oral comments. On the one hand, this saves the teacher’s time of evaluating the students’ compositions. On the other hand, this provides better feedback for the students.Peer feedback means students provide feedback for each other.
