(b) Background CE1.1 Nature of the project: This project was conducted as the graduate design for my bachelor degree. With the rapid development of economy in the around-Bohai Bay area and the northeast three provinces, the existed No. 102 Highway and Shenyang-Panjin highway could not meet the increased traffic requirement any longer. Thus a new high standard expressway was in urgently demand for continuous economy development. The Shenyang-Shanghaiguan Expressway was designed to link the two important areas in China. Except the aim for economy, the expressway was also with military and political significances. This design was for a bid section of that expressway. CE1.2 Objective: The objective of this project was to analyze the traffic conditions in that area and to predict the future traffic demand in 20 years. Based on the obtained data, an optimized solution for the expressway was proposed. Then the details for the expressway were designed. CE1.3 My duties: In the project, I was the designer. I used my fundamental knowledge of civil engineering and traffic engineering to analyze the data, and on the basis of the data I worked out a solution for the expressway, including the route selection, construction budget, the road width selection, base and surface structure design, culvert and bridge design, retaining wall design,

affiliated facilities design and so on. Finally, I typed the design report with Microsoft Word and drew the construction drawings by AutoCAD. And I also discussed the difference between the codes JTJ 014-86 and JTJ014-97. CE1.4 Organizational structure: Associate Professor C。。 J。。。 was my supervisor, two students including me working out two solutions for comparison, two lectures as tutors providing technical support. Fig. 1.1 Organizational chart of the project (c) Personal Workplace Activity CE1.5 In the first week, I firstly analyzed the traffic data for No.102 Highway and Shenyang-Panjin Highway provided by Liaoning Provincial Communication Department. The data includes the annual amount of vehicles through Shenyang-Dalian Expressway, that through No.102 Highway, that though Shenyang-Panjin Highway and the increasing rate for each yeah since 1993. I used the knowledge of statistics to work out curves for the amount of vehicles though each road and predicted the amount for the future 20 years. Thus the potential traffic demand was obtained. Based on the predicted amount, the technical standard for Shenyang-Shanghaiguan Expressway could be determined. CE1.6 According to the design code, I determined the technical guidelines for this project. A six-lane solution was proposed to meet the traffic data and the roadbed width of the expressway was designed as 34.5 meters. The maximum lengthways gradient was adopted as 3.0%. Grade separation and other separation measures were adopted to guarantee the safety and speed. The design speed was 120km/h, and the design load for bridges was 20t for automobiles and 120t for trailers. The width for possible bridges along the expressway was 2×15 meters. The area is rolling terrain, so the minimum radius of horizontal curve was set as 650 meters. CE1.7 In the following two weeks, I and my group partner worked on the route selection. The proposed route should not only depend on the horizontal direction but also on the topographic features, which controlled the construction budget of the project. Because the excavating work for high position and high embankment or bridges for lower sites would increase the cost and the difficulty for construction. I and my partner both worked out a good route after 10 days. Then we discussed with our tutors and supervisors for which should be selected. Fortunately I won in the competition because my pattern’s route passed one large garden and extra expense must be paid to the farmers for using their land. I had deep impressions on this and learned a lot in this route selection. Although my route was the economical one, my supervisor asked I and my partner to
