全国2009年10月高等教育自学考试英语写作试题课程代码:00603I.Supply the missing paragraph(20 points)The following passage is incomplete with one body paragraph missing.Study the passage carefully and write the missing paragraph in about 100 words.Make sure that your tone and diction are in unity with the passage provided. The Breakdown of CommunicationIt is commonly acknowledged that language problems make communication between people from different cultures difficult.Because of the language barriers, people cannot express their feelings clearly to each other. However, communication problems also exist between individuals from the same culture.Although they have the same cultural background, they sometimes cannot understand each other well.Communication between individuals breaks down because of many factors. The most significant ones include personality, age difference and competition between individuals.Personality has a great influence on communication between people.First, the sharing of common interests is often essential for initiating communication. If two people hold completely different attitudes,it will not be easy for them to start communicating with each other.Second, the willingness to express their feelings and opinions freely is needed if meaningful communication is to be developed. Some people do not want to talk about controversial subjects, fearing that this will hurt their relationship with friends. Instead, they keep their discussion of topics at a very superficial level, which prevents them from knowing and understanding each other. The lack of understanding leads to unsuccessful communication. It is clear that personality, to some extent, affects the initiation and maintenance of communication.Although age difference gives rise to communication problems between two generations, competition poses an even greater problem when people are about the same age.Intense competition in the modern world creates tremendous pressure on people. In order to get ahead in a career or in school, people tend to devote most of their time to working, studying,or other activities that enhance their prospects for the future. As a consequence, they have little inclination to communicate with others. They are anxious about their achievements because those are the measures of success in life. So, keen competition also discourages people from having a good understanding of each other.Communicating with other people involves much effort because people‟s personality, the generation gap and keen competition bring about potential problems. These problems are constantly with us, and any of them may lead to a breakdown in communication between individuals.II.Write an outline(20 points)Read the following passage carefully and compose a ‘‘topic outline’’ for it.What Is a Rodeo?“Rodeo” is a Spanish word meaning ……gathering place or marketplace for cattle.” A rodeo itself is a competitive contest based loosely on traditional cowboy skills of riding and roping. It consists of six major events:riding an untamed horse in a saddle;riding an untamed horse without a saddle;riding a bull;roping a calf;wrestling a bull to the ground;racing horses around barrels with women riders. A rodeo is perhaps the most genuinely American of all sports. The first rodeo took place following a cattle roundup in the 1880s.From this informal cowboy pastime,a colorful spectacle has evolved that contains many familiar American elements--the exciting action of bucking horses and bulls, the explosive masculine environment, the hot dog stands, beer barrels, boots, jeans, and cowboy hats.Today, most rodeos are staged in a large, flat arena that is fenced off to protect the viewing public.Grandstands are erected on two sides of the arena;on the other sides are places to hold the horses, calves, and bulls.Nearby are narrow chutes from which animals are released into the arena. On a platform a loudspeaker system is set up for the announcer, who introduces the riders and comments on the events as they happen.Near the arena are refreshment stands where people gather to buy food and drink. Portable rest rooms are set up near the grandstand, and an ambulance is parked nearby in case of an accident. An opening parade of proud riders on proud horses usually begins a rodeo;the performers carry flapping national and state flags. Then the two-act performance begins.Calf roping and bull wrestling are timed events. In the fastest possible time,a man must rope and throw to the ground a calf and tie three of its feet together. In bull wrestling, the object is to tumble the bull onto its back with its head and all its feet in line.Calf roping has been done under fifteen seconds, and a bull has been wrestled in less than ten seconds. When riding an animal,a contestant mounts before the chute gates are opened. The rider must stay on the bucking animal for eight seconds;points are given for the performance of both the animal and the contestant. In all riding events, the contestant is disqualified if he touches the animal with his free hand.Probably the most difficult rodeo feat is Brahman bull riding.During this event, a rodeo comes to resemble a circus because gaily-costumed clowns come into the arena to distract the bull‟s attention from fallen riders. To stay on a bucking bull for as long as eight seconds is one of the most challenging tasks in a rodeo. Spectators eagerly wait for this event. The present circus extends far beyond the region where the contests first developed. Now rodeos are popular throughout the western half of the U.S.A.and in major eastern and southern cities.Australia also stages these events. One of the biggest rodeos of all is held during the annual Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Canada.III.Compose an essay(60 points)Traditionally, Chinese families would gather at home and have a big dinner on the eve of the Chinese New Year.In recent years, however, many families choose to have the dinner at restaurants.Which do you think is a better choice, and why? Write a 300-word expository essay stating your views.。
父母与孩子之间的差距英语作文The Gap between Parents and Children. The relationship between parents and children is often fraught with complexities and misunderstandings. This gap, often referred to as the "generational gap," is a natural phenomenon that arises due to differences in values, beliefs, lifestyles, and life experiences. As society evolves and technology advances, the divide between the older and younger generations seems to widen, making it crucial to understand and bridge this divide. One of the primary reasons for the gap is thedifference in values and beliefs. Parents, raised in a different era, hold onto traditional values and beliefsthat they consider sacrosanct. On the other hand, children, exposed to a more liberal and globalized world, often embrace new values and beliefs that may differ from their parents'. This disconnect can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings, as each party fails to comprehend theother's perspective.Another significant factor is the difference in lifestyles. Parents, having grown up in a different era, follow a more structured and disciplined lifestyle. They value hard work, discipline, and savings. However, children, raised in an era of technology and instant gratification, prefer a more flexible and自由的生活方式. They value creativity, expression, and enjoying life. This mismatch in lifestyles can lead to conflicts and misunderstandings between parents and children. Moreover, the life experiences of parents and children are vastly different. Parents have gone through different challenges and struggles in their lives that have shaped their perspectives and attitudes. Children, on the other hand, have grown up in a different world, facing different challenges and opportunities. This difference in life experiences can lead to a lack of understanding and empathy between the two generations. To bridge this gap, it is essential for both parentsand children to make an effort. Parents need to be more open-minded and willing to understand their children's perspectives. They should encourage open communication and respect their children's opinions and choices. By doing so, they can foster a sense of trust and understanding thatwill help narrow the gap.Children, on the other hand, need to appreciate and respect their parents' values and beliefs. They should understand that their parents' experiences and perspectives are shaped by their own life experiences and that they may have valid reasons for their beliefs. By showing respect and gratitude, children can help bridge the gap and foster a stronger relationship with their parents.Additionally, both parents and children can benefit from seeking common ground. This could involve finding shared interests or activities that bring them together. It could also mean understanding and respecting each other's differences and finding ways to complement each other's strengths. In conclusion, the gap between parents and children is a natural phenomenon that arises due to differences in values, beliefs, lifestyles, and life experiences. However, it is crucial for both parties to make an effort to understand and bridge this gap. By fostering open communication, respect, and mutual understanding, parents and children can build a stronger and more fulfilling relationship that will benefit them both.。
In modern society, it is fashionable to speak of a generation gap. What is the generation gap? Nowadays it is not surprising to hear children complain that their parents don’t try to understand them, while parents are sorry that their children just won’t follow their instructions. This lack of mutual understanding between parents and their children is what is called “generation gap”. In my opinion,it is the different ideas and attitudes toward the same matter between different generations. In other words, the generation gap refers to the differences in attitude toward things or the lack of understanding between young people and older folks.
What causes the generation gap? One of the main reasons is the rapid changes in the society that makes many things different. Different generations are influenced by different culture, education and values, so they have different knowledge and experiences. For example, parents say that childern don't show them proper respect, while childern complain that their parents don't understand them.是什么原因造成代沟?其中一个主要原因就是社会的迅速变化,使许多事情不一样。
英文作文讨论父母以前和现在区别英文回答:The relationship between parents and children has evolved dramatically over the years. In the past, parents held a position of absolute authority within the family, with children expected to obey without question. Today, the parent-child relationship is more collaborative, with children having greater freedom to express their opinions and make their own choices. There are a number of factors that have contributed to this shift in the parent-child relationship. One factor is the increased educational attainment of both parents and children. In the past, it was common for parents to have a higher level of education than their children, which gave them a natural advantage in terms of knowledge and authority. Today, however, it is becoming increasingly common for children to have a higher level of education than their parents, which has led to a more egalitarianrelationship between the two generations.Another factor that has contributed to the shift in the parent-child relationship is the changing economic landscape. In the past, both parents often worked outside the home, and children were left to fend for themselves during the day. However, due to changing economic circumstances and social norms, today it is more common for one parent to stay at home to raise the children. This has led to a closer relationship between parents and children, as they spend more time together and have moreopportunities to interact. Finally, the rise of social media and other forms of technology has also impacted the parent-child relationship. In the past, parents had more control over the information that their children were exposed to, which gave them a way to shape their children's worldview. However, todaychildren have access to information and opinions from a wide range of sources, which has made it more difficult for parents to control their children's exposure to certain ideas. The shift in the parent-child relationship has had a number of positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, it has led to a more open and egalitarianrelationship between parents and children, which has allowed for greater communication and understanding. On the other hand, it has also led to a loss of authority for parents, which has made it more difficult for them to enforce rules and discipline their children. As the world continues to change, it is likely that the parent-child relationship will continue to evolve. It is important for both parents and children to be aware of these changes and to adjust their expectations accordingly. By working together, parents and children can build a strong and healthy relationship that will last a lifetime.中文回答:过去与现在的父母差异。

This reality gives rise to the following question: what kind of boundaries can be deemed appropriate in an academic setting ?My opinion is that, in general, a relatively formal distance should be kept between professors and their students. One reason to maintain a formal distance between students and teachers is to highlight the instructor’s role as an authority figure. This is important so that the professors can enforce discipline, have instructions followed, and command respect from students. Another reason why teachers should maintain a formal students with their students is to avoid real and perceived bias. If the teacher develops close relationships with the students, it may be difficult to completely eliminate bias. 英语四级真题作文2Nowadays, we are witnessing a surge in technology in all aspects. People’s views vary greatly on whether this trend are causing people’s addiction. In my point of view, being immersed in a sea of technology will definitely harm people’s life, even make them become addicted. For one thing, despite the fact that some technologies, are invented to help people, many of them are made to attract people’s attention and make profit. Unaware of this, one would easily get trapped in the world of technology, like computer technology, and lose himself. For another, since most of us are living in a highly digitalized society, few can escape from the influence of their friends and families who are already addicts to technology. All in all, without strict government restriction and proper guidance on computer technology, people are exposed to the risk of being addicted. It is also necessary for everyone to resist this temptation and maintain good self-discipline.Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on whether violent video games online will cause students’ violent behaviors. However, with the increasingly serious physician-patient relationship, it is important to find out some ways to solve the problem. As a matter of fact, although sometimes there are some defects in medical infrastructure, patients can make allowance for them friendly for their good relationship. You may find yourself facing a whole new set of expectations about the proper way to behave. Go out to dine with your new friends and you may find yourself having to adopt a whole new set of table manners. Then there is the problem of who is responsible for paying for the meal. This may not be immediately apparent. In some cultures friends share the cost equally at the end of the meal, in others the preference is for friends to take turns, repaying one meal with another at a later date. Working out the details of local customs like these may take time, but, in my view, it is well worth the effort if you want to avoid misunderstandings.4.2To be a grandparent is a big deal in China. Chinese grandparents are widely known for their devotion to the responsibilities of taking care of the third generation. This, however, is a primary cause of the conflict between parents and their adult children, for there exist apparent differences in aspects like lifestyle and parenting approaches between the two generations. You can expect parents to help you manage your household and take on childcare duties, thus relieving you of your burden as a parent, but you must know, very often, you have to leave your own parenting ideas behind. Meanwhile, the adult child simply can't take the kindness of his/her parents for granted. As your parents helped you out when you struggled to balance family and career, you are certainlyexpected to repay their kindness by taking care of them when they get old.Reading & ComprehendingReading 11. Relationship between two generations
In a big family, relationships between each other are complicated. If one wants to stretch a pedigree chart during this winter vacation, it must be a colossal project. But in general, or rather from my own point of view, relationship in a family consists of two kinds: the one between the older and grown-ups, the other one between grown-ups and children.
First, the relationship between the older and grown-ups, let’s say my grandparents and parents. In my memory, they live separately. At times, we will get together on important holidays. This kind of connection is for those old people who can afford their own living. Just as my grandparents, they receive pensions from the local government. It’s ample for their everyday expenses. The couple can do what they want and worry about nothing but their vegetable garden. They just wait to spend their autumn years like hermits, quiet and happy. Another kind of self-independence for elder is like a bag lady or gentleman. They don’t live with their children, either. They are homeless. They move about the streets of big cities with everything they own stuffed into a bag or a paper sack. In spite of that, they don’t rely on anybody. However, they are lonely, with no one talking with. It’s like a long journey. When the destination is reached, no one knows what is left for them. Maybe, their children see them as burden and send them to nursing home, but they just escape from it. Nursing home is to them what prison is to criminals. There is still another
style of family that several generations live together, in peace and harmony. Although it’s hard to maintain those ties, once formed, it is also not that easy to break up.
Second, the relationship between grown-ups and children, let’s say, my parents and I. When I was still a child, my parents went out to earn money and leave me to be attended to by the old. Only when a long holiday approaches will they come back home. Sometimes, they even stay outside during the Spring Festival. As a result, children whose childhood is like mine are more independent than their contemporary. The love we derive from our parents is scant. Some other parents just spoil their child and are afraid of his or her future when he or she is just a baby. They don’t relate much to their kids and often obscure them from branching out. Kids would feel stifled. But once these children step into the society, they are flimsy and fragile.
By and large, whatever relationship it is, they are all hard to deal with. If we omit, big problems will come for us. In my opinion, the old and the young all need to be well cared for. Not only they should be secured of shelter and food or whatever necessities, but we also should listen to their inner voice and keep them company. Time we spend with each other is not only insufficient but also inefficient. We are not just family members; we are also reliance for heart and soul. It is one’s company, not companion that counts.。
