GORE® TENARA®Sewing ThreadPROCESSING GUIDELINESFor seams thatoutlast the fabric.Successful sewing starts here GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread is guaranteed to last for the life of the fabric in which it is sewn, making it the ideal sewing thread for outdoor and marine applications.GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread can be sewn at 2,600 stitches per minuteor more. Because GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread is made from expanded polytetrafluoro e thylene (ePTFE), the sewing process is slightly different from that used with typical polyester thread.Selecting and Balancing Your StitchYou can use GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread with either a lockstitch or chainstitch type of sewing stitch. For either stitch, you should ensure the stitch is balanced to maximize seam strength and seam elasticity.Tension settings are crucial for balanced stitching. To set your lockstitch tension for GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread:1. The starting bobbin tension setting should allow the bobbin to mimic a child’s yo-yo. The bobbin should slowly fall to the floor when suspended by the sewing thread.2. The bobbin thread tension should be adjusted as low as possible for a flat or running stitch on the bobbin thread. (See Figure 3).3. Gradually increase the tension on your top thread to obtain a balanced stitch and a tight seam.Note: To determine the stitch balance between the top and bottom threadsof a lockstitch, cut out a 10 cm length of your seam and pull out the top and bottom threads. Measure the length of both threads. If they are the same length, the stitch balance is adjusted properly. In a balanced lockstitch (stitch type 301), the topand bottom threads should meet in the middle of thefabric, forming distinct stitches on the top side andunderside o f the fabric as shown in Figures 1 and 2.If the top thread tension is too high or the bobbinthread tension too low, flat or running stitchesappear on the top of the fabric as shown in Figure 3.If the top thread tension is too low or the bobbinthread tension too high, flat or running stitchesappear on the underside of the fabric as shownin figure 4. The loose thread loops in Figure 4 arecommon when first using our heavier threads.A balanced chainstitch (stitch type 401) top threadappears similar to a balanced lockstitch as shown inFigure 5.The chainstitch top thread should be pulledcompletely to the underside o f the fabric, with thebottom thread appearing as shown in Figures 6 and 7.A poorly tensioned loose chainstitch bottom thread appears as in Figure 8.Figure 8Figure 3Figure 5Figure 7Figure 6Figure 2Figure 1Figure 4TroubleshootingWhen first using GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread, you might find it helpful to use the following table as a guide to ensure the best performance of the thread. Once you are familiar with the characteristics of GORE® TENARA® Sewing Thread, your seams will last for the lifetime of the fabric.Possible Cause ActionExcess speed Reduce speedExcess thread tension Balance seam tension as described in“Selecting and Balancing Your Stitch.”Improper thread path Verify the thread path with your machinemanufacturer; use all recommended threadguides.Needle burr – bent or deflected needle strikes feed dog or throat plate Check the needle for burrs, and replace the needle if necessary.Burr on thread guide Use a magnifying glass to check all threadguides, and repair or replace any guides asneeded.Thread kinks Place spool socks over each spool of thread, extend spool sock up to first thread guide,or use thread brake on each spool.Broken thread take-up spring Replace.Bobbin and mechanical opener/bobbin case lifter not correctly adjusted Consult machine manufacturer or service technician.Type of Uneven Stitch ActionFlat or running top-stitch Decrease the tension of the top thread. Flat or running bottom-stitch Increase the tension of the top thread.Loops on the underside of the fabric (more common with heavy threads)Increase the tension of the top thread to approximately twice the tension used for TR/KTR thread, and balance the stitch as described in “Selecting and Balancing Your Stitch.”Possible Cause ActionImproper thread path Verify the thread path with your machinemanufacturer; use all recommended threadguides.Misaligned needle(Needle eye or cove should face the bobbin hook.)Rotate the needle clockwise until its eye faces the bobbin hook or is slightly rotated towards the hook as the hook approaches needle.Bent or deflected needle (Heavy fabrics can bend needle.)Replace the needle; if needles bend frequently, use a larger needle, or request stronger needles from your manufacturer.Incorrect needle size and/or needle construction(The needle may be too large, preventing the thread from consistently forming a loop. Special needles are available to reduce skipped stitches.)Use recommended needle size in the table, or try one size smaller. Contact needle supplier for skipped stitch reducing needles.Excess thread through the needle When pausing the machine, maintainpressure on the material with the presserfoot.Thread kinks Place spool socks over each spool of thread,or use thread brake on each spool.Worn bobbin hook(The hook should be pointed and sharp.)Replace the bobbin hook.Incorrect machine timing(The bobbin hook and needle must meet as per manufacturer specifications.)Use a timing gauge (available from your machine supplier) to adjust the machine timing per the manufacturer’s instructions.Incorrect bobbin hook placement: incorrect distance from needle Reposition the hook per the manufacturer’s instructions.Worn machine components(Needle bar, bearings, hook races, thread take-up spring, etc.)Replace components as needed. Reduce future wear by cleaning and lubricating per manufacturer’s recommendations.Chainstitching: incorrect looper position Reposition the looper closer to the needleper manufacturer’s instructions. If problemcontinues, consider replacing the looper. Chainstitching: Dull looper Replace looper, and ensure proper clearancefrom needle.Maintaining QualityMost importantly, please follow your sewing machine manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Sewing machines are precision equipment that operates at high speeds. Cleaning and lubricating must be regularly scheduled to ensure continuous,trouble-free service. Oftentimes, problems with thread breaks and skipped stitches are due directly to misaligned and/or worn machine components. Many times these components wear out prematurely if they are not sufficiently cleaned and lubricated. You can ensure the best performance from GORE ® TENARA ® Sewing Thread by periodically checking the following parts and settings of the sewing machine:Part or Setting Visual Check ProblemSpool and thread stand alignment Spool center should be aligned with first thread guide and spool should beuprightMisalignment causes tension peaks and uneven stitches.Spool and threadstand distance Spool top should be within 6”–12”(15–30 cm) below of first thread guide Spool too close, spool will not unwind properly. Too far, thread “balloon” can catch on thread stand or other thread(double needle machines).Possible CauseAction Bobbin continues to rotate after themachine stops Use lightweight (aluminum) bobbins, anti-overrun washers, or “star washers” availablefrom your sewing machine manufacturer. When sewing double needle lockstitch applications, use an R needle pointshape on both left and right sides. If you experience skipped stitches or thread separation on the left needle, try using a CR type needle.Part or Setting Visual Check ProblemNeedle Point Point is sharp, and needleis straight.Dull or bent needles can cause skipped stitches and broken thread.Needle Condition Needle is free of burrs.Needle burrs typically occur when aneedle is deflected and strikes part ofthe machine. These burrs can causethread breakage.Needle Alignment Needle eye is alignedproperly with the hook.Misaligned needles may cause skipped stitches or thread breaks.Thread Tension Settings The thread tension onbobbin and top are assufficient to createbalanced stitches andtight seams.Tensions that are set too high can causethread to break or seams that are tootight. Tensions that are too low cancause loose and uneven stitches.Thread Guides Condition Guides should be cleanand free of burrs.Burrs and dirt on the thread guides cancatch the thread and cause unbalancedstitches or the thread to break.Hook Points Points are sharp andstraight.Hooks wear naturally during use and can cause skipped stitches or thread breaks when dull.Condition of Machine Components (Needle bar bearings, hook race, etc.)Machine components areclean and well lubricated.Worn machine components can causebroken thread, uneven seams, andskipped stitches.Bobbin Hook Position and Timing The hook is positionedclose to the needle, without touching theneedle. The bobbin hook can cause skippedstitches if too far from the needle.W.
Stainless SPIKES NEEDLE STRIPSINSTRUCTIONMANUALINTRODUCTIONStainless SPIKES Needle Strips is the latest bird control product from Bird-X, recognized worldwide as the Bird Control "X-Perts" since 1964. We are the only company anywhere that sells a complete line of bird repelling products, including ultrasonic and sonic sound generators, visual scare devices, roosting inhibitors, netting and taste aversions. New product development is ongoing. Our sales consultants analyze problems and make recommendations based on each customer's specific needs.DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT AND HOW IT WORKSNeedle strips are a simple, humane, maintenance-free, long-term solution to pest bird problems, and have been used on buildings and structures worldwide to eliminate roosting and nesting surfaces and landing strips. Birds avoid alighting on the spikes as humans avoid walking on a bed of nails – the spikes are not lethal, just extremely uncomfortable.Stainless SPIKES is a base mold of transparent polycarbonate with stainless steel projections protruding up and out (angled) to both sides. . There are three variations (see diagram & specs, next page):• Regular alternates wide stainless steel projections (4.5” spread) with narrow stainless steel projections (2.5” spread).• Slim Stainless SPIKES has only the narrower stainless steel projections (2.5” spread) in order to cover ledges less than 2" wide. • Extra-Wide alternates wide stainless steel projections (4.5” spread) with extra-wide (7.5” spread) AND narrower (2.5” spread)stainless steel projections.24 foot kit 50 foot kit100 foot kit REGULAR (#STS) #STS-24 #STS-50 #STS-100 SLIM (#SLS) #SLS-24 #SLS-50 #SLS-100EXTRA WIDE (#EWS) #EWS-24 #EWS-50 #EWS-100Designed and manufactured by:300 N. It exhibits exceptional bonding to a broad range of materials including metal, glass, plastic, composite, tile, cement, rubber, leather, wood and vinyl. Unlike many common adhesives:•Safe to ship by air•Not flammable material•No hazardous wasteSize: 10.5 oz. cartridge Application: standard caulking gunPRE-INSTALLATIONNo two bird infestation problems are exactly the same. Begin with research. Information related to the bird problem will have bearing on the actual installation and its success:Survey the birds. Type? Population? Patterns?Survey your property. What do birds find attractive about your area? Can it be changed?Remove all inducements. Eliminate nests, fledglings, droppings, dead birds, and the residual scent. Also remove food spillage, garbage, nesting material and other appealing items.Maintain a clean, changing environment. Continue to clean nests, debris and droppings.Install early. Install before "bird season" begins; it is easier to keep the birds away than to rout them out once they have already established a living pattern.Use products synergistically. Different kinds of devices (add a visual device or a sound repeller) produce a synergistic effect -- in combination the products yield much greater effectiveness than Stainless SPIKES alone. You may find this necessary if there are certain areas where it is undesirable or impractical to install spikes. This will maximize effectiveness throughout the entire property. Consider alternate locations. Apply to nearby locations where birds may go when they leave their current area.Familiarize yourself with the legal and public relations environment. Are there related environmental laws?Precaution: Although non-lethal, Stainless SPIKES’ actual projections are quite sharp. Wear protective gloves, and be careful duringinstallation and handling.INSTALLATIONStainless SPIKES can be mounted on any surface whether flat, curved orirregular, and on any material, whether masonry, metal, canvas, glass or wood. 24” units affix quickly with SPIKES Special Adhesive, screws, nails, wire ties, etc. Units may be “snapped” to fit lengths less than 24". Always firmly attachStainless SPIKES - never balance sections precariously or wedge them.COVERAGEStainless SPIKES is only effective where applied; nearby unprotected areas can encourage roosting. A working diagram while measuring will translate into a well-covered installation.Spacing: Measure the width of each area to be covered. For every 5" of width, use one row of Stainless SPIKES; for fractions thereof, use one row of SLIM Stainless SPIKES. For widths of 7” or more, use one row of EXTRA WIDE Stainless SPIKES. The projections from Stainless SPIKES should extend at least ½" past the exposed edge or edges of the area.Calculation of Linear Feet Needed: Measure the length of each area to be covered, allowing for curves or bends in the surface - flexible Stainless SPIKES will follow easily. Based on length (multiply length by 2, 3, etc. if necessary for wider widths) order an appropriate amount of Stainless SPIKES.AFFIXING Stainless SPIKES TO SURFACESStainless SPIKES is versatile, and easily attached to surfaces of every size, shape and material. Use any of the following methods, or devise your own.▪ SPIKES Special Adhesive: Bond only to dry, clean surfaces, when the temperature is between 32°F and 120°F. Apply a bead of adhesive to underside of base. Firmly press Stainless SPIKES onto surface so that it makes solid contact. Allow adhesive to dry and form a "rivet" through the holes in the base.) Part #SSA from Bird-X; one tube will affix approximately 20 feet of Stainless SPIKES.▪ Screws: Use #5 (1/8”) flat Phillips-head screws and a screwdriver with a shaft of at least 4". ▪ Nails: Use 1/8" nails and a nail set.▪ Wire Ties: Recommended for cabling, piping and thin railings. ▪ Clamps or Velcro : Use for temporary installations .GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE INSTALLATIONS (Reread PRE-INSTALLATION.) Thorough and proper planning, installation and follow-up maintenance are essential to bird control success.Preparation: Clean, disinfect and repair surface if damaged. Wear protection to avoid health hazards. Remove overhanging branches or foliage above the surface to be protected so birds cannot land to drop nesting material into Stainless SPIKES .Thorough Coverage: Install on all existing and potential roosting areas, and as necessary to surfaces directly above the currently infested areas, so that birds cannot drop debris into the Stainless SPIKES from these higher surfaces.Creative Coverage: Cover all exposed surfaces, inside corners and crevices. Because birds are stubborn, this may require vertical, sideways, diagonal or upside down mounting in addition to standard, right-side up mounting.APPLICATIONSCreativity and experimentation will govern, but the following illustrations suggest a few of the possibilities. ▪ Louvers, Eaves▪ Air conditioners — Use multiple strips to cover the entire depth. ▪ Ledges, Sills, Gutters and Pipes▪ Beams, Trusses, Support Structures▪ Signs, Letters, Church Crosses — Follow the shape on each letter or structure and cover every surface or crevice in which a bird canroost. Flexible Stainless SPIKES can make both concave and convex curves.Correctly spaced installations for various surface widths plus projections extending exposed edge.strips of Stainless SPIKES radiating outward anddownward from the highest point of the dome.▪ Statues, Columns, Cornices — Apply to base, andaround head, arms, curves, crevices and openings.▪ Roofs — Apply to roof perimeter, chimney, antennae, and the ridge on a gabled roof. Apply to the inside of achimney (projections facing inward) to keep animals out.▪ Cables — Apply to any cable thick enough to support abird (this is easy since base is 0.8" wide.)▪ Trees — Apply to tops of branches to stop birds. Applyin horizontal rings around a tree trunk, starting 4' fromthe ground, then higher at 5" intervals to stop climbinganimals (use a similar defense for Bird Baths and BirdFeeders.)TROUBLE SHOOTINGEvery bird infestation is a unique challenge, as numerousvariables are involved. Besides obvious differences (birdtype, infestation size, structure type and physical location…),environmental factors make it impossible to state installation“rules”. Here are suggestions to maximize effectiveness, butexperimentation is often required. Birds are creatures ofhabit, and they will try to reclaim their areas immediatelyafter installation. While they will be quickly discouraged, they will seek alternate areas. Therefore, make sureyou’ve…■ first read this manual and completely understand theinstallation procedure.■ installed sufficient linear feet, and sufficient rows onsurfaces wider than 5"■ treated non-yet-infested areas. If birds are routed from their original location only to move to a nearby untreated area, all efforts will have been in vain.■ cleaned and disinfected the infested area of nests, debris, etc. See GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE INSTALLATIONS. Repeat as necessary. ■ checked that no flaw exists in the application. If so, birds may find it and infest, and you may need to amend the application.SYNERGYYou may find certain areas where it is undesirable or impractical to install spikes. If this is the case, we suggest that you protect these untreated areas generally by using other products (visual repellers, sound repellers) in conjunction with the spikes. This will maximize effectiveness throughout the entire property.
