Introduction1.1 About Alice WalkerThe Color Purple (1982), written by the famous Afro-American female writer Alice Walker (1944-), won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1983. She is the first Afro-American woman who this award. The novel was adopted for film in 1984 by Spielberg and this adaptation brought in the small rural town of Eatonton, Georgia on February 9, 1944. She was the eighth and last child of Willie Lee Walker and Minnie Tallulah Grant, two sharecroppers. Her parents‘ experiences with the oppressive sharecropping system and the racism of the American South on 1965, Walker was involved in Civil Rights Movement following , which influenced (1976) and The Color Purple. She even married a Jewish Civil Rights lawyer, Mel Leventhal. Another movement that influenced ‘s Liberation Movement which she regarded as white women‘s movement. She became interested in the conditions of black women who suffered the double oppression--- racism and sexism. The latter came from white men, even from black men. She realized the necessity for them to achieve freedom. So the concern of black women and the impact of racism and sexism on them became the major themes of Walker‘s novels. She endeavored to explore an ideal way for black women to fight against racial and sexual discrimination and to establish their identity. As a result, she wrote ‘s sexual abuse and prejudice against female blacks.1.2 About The Color PurpleThe Color Purple is an epistolary novel. It consists of 90 letters, of which over two thirds (61 in number) Celie wrote to God, 14 to Celie‘s life, with Nettie‘s African adventure. The time frame of the novel covers over thirty years, and Celie is now in middle age, in who were taken away from . Later Celie‘s letters). The man abused evil desire to away and found peace working for a missionary family and taking care of their two children, Adam and Olivia. Celie never the meantime Celie takes care of and endures a American singer, falls ill and is brought over for bond well with one another, and Shug teaches Celie to love andstand up for she learns that Fonso was their business. After Fonso dies, Celie comes into the property that is rightfully slope. He loses alcoholic, and almost dies. He survives, becomes friends with Celie, and fine all the years, married to the missionary after she learns that the missionary‘s two children are adopted, and are in fact Celie‘s blood and flesh. They come back from Africa and reunite with Celie. Many people abroad are interested in Alice Walker and .‖(Mel Watkins, 1970:165) Dinitia Smith suggests that the novel marks a major advance for Walker‘s art: ―because the book is superb, it places the company of Faulkner, from whom she appears to narrator, for instance, and the presentation of a complex story from a naïve point of view.‖ These positive remarks reveal that The Color Purple is probably Walker‘s most artistically mature work which transcends the boundaries of the female gender to embrace more universal concerns about individual autonomy and self-reliance.Similar to the foreign scholars and with the passion for American minority literature, more and more Chinese critics and scholars show great interest in Alice Walker and asserts in ―The Color Purple and Alice Walker‘s Womanism‖ (Liu Yuan, 2006: 243) that the novel gives a full expression of the ideological emotion of feminism and a vivid description of black women‘s struggle for liberation and equality. In ―The Pattern of Chang in Alice Walker(Liu Yuan, 2006: 223)‖, Liu Ying argues that the pattern change in Alice Walker‘s must undergo to achieve their vision.2. Cultural and Historical Background2.1 FeminismFeminism is a discourse which involves various movements, theories, and philosophies which are concerned with the issue of gender difference. It advocates equality fo r women and campaigns for women‘s rights and interests. Apart from the criticism of social relationship, many feminists also emphasize the analysis of the inequality between men and women an d the promotion of women‘s benefits. Feminist theory aims at knowing the essence of inequality and stressing on genderpolitics and sexuality. The exploring theme of feminism includes discrimination, stereotyped image, and materialization of sex, , oppression and paternity.Feminism originated in the West. It was regarded as a theoretical and political movement which took women‘s experience as its source and motivation. The word feminism first appeared in France and meant women‘s liberation. Then it spread to Britain and America and gradually became popular. At the beginning, the movement pursued the equality between men and women. The right to vote was the first and foremost. During 1920s and 1930s, the majority of the women in western countries gained equ al political rights. However, in social life and people‘s sense, women were still in an inferior position. So the feminist began to realize that there lay a problem of gender relations and power. Therefore, feminism movement turned into the analysis of power structure and the origin of inequality between men and women. Feminism is the combination of theory and practice. It‘s a kind of belief and ideology aiming at eliminating all inequality including sexual discrimination. The movement of feminism is divided into three phases. The first generation started in 1850s and continued to the beginning of 20th century. The second phase which was called Modern Feminism lasted till 1960s. Post Modern Feminism developing up to now. The first generation of feminism derived from the French Revolution and the Enlightenment. The representative figure was Harriet Tyler Mill from England. The primary appeal of the movement was women‘s equal rights in education, legislation and economy. The feminists mainly called for women‘s liberation from economic aspect. Their achievements later feminism, especially the Marxist or Socialist Feminism. Leo Tolstoy‘s Anna Kalielinna was the representative literature of that time. The International Women‘s Day al so came into being in that period. But during this period femini sm ‘t risen up to the theoritical altitude and remained at experimental stage. From the beginning of the 20th century to 1960s, the world Feminism. Socialist Feminism mainly concerned women‘s equal rights in economic life and class struggle, while Radical Feminism and Liberation Feminism called for women‘s freedom in sex. They challenged thewhole male-dominated society and the sex class system. Post-Modern Feminism originated between 1960s and 1980s. Two major elements contributed to its booming. First, sexual liberation led to many problems of broken families, single mothers and the spread of AIDS. These problems people to think about whether it is worth the cost to strive for sexual liberation and feminism. Second, as more and more women the leading position of government, company and other organizations, people‘s doubt about women‘s real role in family and society deeper. Thus Post Modern Feminism rose in response to the proper time and conditions. Compared to Modern Feminism, it puts more emphasis on the philosophical thoughts beyond the limits of women and the society. Women politics, economy and education. A social revolution promoted by feminism. More and more women take part in different kinds of social activities to prove themselves. The emerging of many outstanding female politicians and enterprisers is a typical example. Thus the gender structure of the society becomes more balanced and the future, women will their own value of life.To be more specific, feminism in The Color Purple:a)Feminists search for the source of literary creation in Afro-Americanwomen .They emphasize that Afro-American women gives Afro-American women creativity.b)Feminists attribute Afro-American women‘s misfortune to the combinedracism and sexism. While disclosing patriarchy‘s oppression upon Afro-American women, feminists point out that racism corrupts Afro-American men and consequently deepens Afro-American women‘s sufferings.c)Feminists attach great importance to sisterhood, which is the escape women.d)Feminists believe that Afro- American women‘s self-respect andself-improvement will influence Afro-American men and ultimately will make them get rid of their patriarchal prejudice and make them respect women.e)Feminists believe that mutual understanding and communication betweenAfro- American men and women will improve and perfect their relationship.2.2 Two Oppressions Upon the Black WomenPeople may know about racial discrimination and sexual discrimination, but they may not know Huston‘s Their Eyes Were Watching God can give us an accurate answer, ―so the white man throw down the load and tell the niggers to pick it up. He picks it up because ‘t tote it. He folks. The nigger woman is the mule of the worlds so far as I can see‖The mule of the world-this is the role black women are forced to play in the domestic, social and political circumstances, and this is also the fate of the black women in The Color Purple. In this novel, Alice Walker spares no details and delineates a clear picture of the two oppressions that the black women endure.Black women don‘t the society. They think that they should that they should obey their fathers before they get married and obey their animal. But it is not right. Because nowadays, everyone beings are equal. No one is a slave to another. So the black women must realize that they should fight for their equal rights, for their social status, and for their own choose what kind of life they like, what job they want, even whatever they want which is not out of law.3. Female Consciousness Awakening through Suffering3.1 Celie‘s ChildhoodCelie begins from begins decides to begin sexually abusing Celie. He also tells Celie that to Celie, especially when Celie becomes pregnant. After Celie . Celie‘s father begins ignoring the pregnant Celie and starts looking at Nettie, Celie‘s younger sister. Celie then gives birth to a boy, and the boy is sent to others. She knows nothing about physiology, and she dare not speak to ‘t go to school like other children and is compelled to stay at ‘t understand the affair object of indetermination, and is a kind of unreal belief. She will not get the answer from God. Writing letters to God well reflects the solitude on the spirit of Celie.3.2 Celie‘s Unhappy Mar riage LifeAt the age of 22, Celie is discarded by old thing and marries Mr.X who . Mr.X does not love , the from pain and suffering to numbness.Celie finds that she the ‘t love understand only show order to get someof look for -law. This obese crude woman actually arrogant -law, but Sofia is actually the woman who does not care about what other thinks. She manages the family property, dominates above the man, and all this makes . If we say that Shug is attaches to and is using the man, then Sofi a substitutes for man‘s status completely. However, Sophia is the representative black woman who receives discrimination against and persecutes most in The Color Purple. Sophia is vital, and dares to fight at first. She is big, vigorous, and . She says ―All my life I ‘t safe in a family of men‖ (Walker, 1983: 22). She is a good wife, good mother. Her upright disposition and the dauntless rebellious spirit let Celie envy and admires. One day, the wife of the mayor finds Sophia is astutely competent; therefore she wants Sophia to go to the face. After rising in self-defense, she receives a group of police's beating mercilessly. Imprisoned for six months, she gets the disability, and almost loses the female is not only the family tradition, but also the social tradition. Sophia actually just like a mountain to press not but suffers the Caucasian male and feminine oppression. Just as feminists deeply realize the profound meaning—while the feminine consciousness awakens in black women, they must connect it with the entire race‘s destiny together closely. Only when the entire race obtains the thorough liberation can they truly get rid of the sex discrimination. But Sofia‘s behavior indeed e ncourages Celie. It is Celie the tremendous strength, particularly the friendly concern from Shug who is the most important model to Celie.Shug, a woman, who is just like to be crazy, also including the unreasoning pensioned Albert. To Celie, Albert is crude ominous barbarian, but in front of Shug, , goes to the kitchen personally to prepare food for Shug without . But on the other not stay for a long time. Shug is just opposite to Celie, if one is the tradition puppet, the other is the inborn traitor. As for the man, Shug looks like angel, and also looks like the devil. What does not allow denying is that Shug is the most important example in the life of Celie. She just blows wrinkles to a spring lake to cause the water breeze, swings the liquation level to ripple in the , awakeningCelie‘s attractive woman. It is she who tells Celie‘s smiling face to be beautiful. It is she who tells the world‘s being filled with the love, and she loves Celie very much. Through awakening Celie‘s deep love to kissing with Shug, Celie‘s outlook on life the end. Shug not only tempts men, but also more initiative, positive attitude, she is trying business. She is worthy of being the navigator and teacher on the road of Celie‘s awakening.3.5 Nettie‘s LettersThere are three models in Celie‘s life. The first one is the younger sister Nettie. If Shug Nettie is the beautiful Celie‘s life forever. In these many years the only younger sister's letter. The reason why she she receives the letters, she could understand younger sister's echo.Nettie being made insistent demand of —―Write‖ (Walker, 1983: 10). After resisting Albert‘s rape, she bravely chooses to flee, and finally reaches Africa, doing keep me from it‖ (Walker, 1983:10). She writing letters to Celie, narrating what she sees and these letters finally are read by Celie, these letters Celie‘s rebellion and leaving for Memphis. Nettie is a new outstanding black feminine representative, she is optimistic, self-confident, and believes that knowledge can change th e black female‘s low social position. It is she that summoning Celie in the distant place. It is she that always protects Celie silently. So we can say that she is the torchbearer to Celie.Celie is any correspondence from it, because she and Mr.X go to the mailbox one day and she leaves the she stops, and vice versa. Nettie also tells Celie that she go to the reverend and , and she thinks of . Corrine is married to Samuel.Celie writes about Africa. Mr.X returns kill Mr.X. Shug tries to get Celie off the idea of murdering Mr.X and reminds Themselves, the Only Godness to Save ThemselvesBefore Celie writes to is the only spiritual prop of Celie; God is the only one Celie believes in. She thinks God is omnipresent and omnipotent. From the suffering of so many years she finally understands that God is not a white man or ablack man, not a male or a female. God is one oneself. She no longer writes letters to God, and starts to write to . Only by shaking off the spiritual shackles can Celie recognize , recognize that women and realize the female dignity.Celie starts to write to ‘t life. She live with what style she you first come to live with me. You were so skinny, Lord, , you looked about to fly away. You saw that, I say. I saw it, and wife, you know, it and then comes to know feelings. She learns that she also deserves all the things that others do. Celie and Mr. Albert might not they are together but in the end they know they are different persons with different views in life. In the end, they realize it. And it is that brings a true equal opportunity to form friendly relationship between each other. The color purple means freedom and on Celie will only live for ‘t live for others any longer. She will never be afraid of being treated badly, she will never be afraid of self-consciousness.―I feel a little peculiar round the children. For one thing, they grown. And I see they think me and Nettie and Shug and Albert Samuel and Harpo and Sophia and Jack and Odessa real old and don‘t know much what going on. But I don‘t think us feel old at all. And us so life, Celie forgives life, own children, own world. She never lives for others. She is completely successful in pursuing .4. ConclusionIn The Color Purple, Alice Walker portrays a new black woman image--a feminist image, who explores to gain self-consciousness from racial and sexual discrimination in the society and in the family. Primarily, Alice Walker is deeply concerned with the political condition in which black women are situated, reveals the miserable life black women under the trouble oppression and explores the sexual and racial politics employed by men and racists to oppress women. Simultaneously, she suggests in the novel that the liberation of black womanhood should be based on black women‘s struggle to reclaim their identity and self-worth, pointing out the necessary way that black women must undergo in exploring self-identity from unconsciousness of self to attainment of cultural identity, and attainment of woman selfhood which experiences the exploration ofself-recognition, spiritual liberation and independence. As a new feminist image, Celie explores to realize self-recognition, self–value, self–respect and self-consciousness in the society. And she tries to search within metamorphose into a strong and self-assured black woman. Celie quest for spiritual liberation from patriarchal tyranny and traditional religious belief, and seeks for a new spiritual support in pursuit of the immanent God--the ubiquitous Spirit, which purifies the soul of being, and gives the family as well as in the society. To sum up, Alice Walker‘s The Color Purple is a novel of innovation in the content. Only then can they achieve a sense of oneness of creation, as symbolized by the color purple. On the whole, in The Color Purple black women protagonists‘exploring of self-consciousness clearly point out a bright way not only for black women‘s liberation and freedom, but also for that of all women in the world.Bibliography[1] Alice Walker.
