A
Scientists think that there has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we have not found life on any other planets yet.
The earth is a planet and it goes around the sun, which is a star. Seven other planets also go around the sun. None of them has an environment like that of the earth, so scientists do not think they will find people and things on them. The sun and its planets are called the solar system (太阳系). The solar system is a small part of our galaxy (星系). There are billions of stars in the Galaxy, and our sun is only one of them.
Scientists have also discovered many other galaxies in the universe (宇宙). They are very far away and their light has to travel for many years to reach us. So how large is the universe? It is impossible to imagine.
Scientists have sent spaceships to the planet Mars (火星) to take photos. They have even sent spaceships to travel outside the solar system. However, no spaceship has travelled far enough to reach other stars in our Galaxy.
Scientists have always asked questions: with so many stars in the universe, are we alone, or is there life out there in space? Have there been visitors to the earth from other planets? Why has no one communicated with us? We do not know the answers… yet.

A primary school bus driver stopped the bus in a gas station in Ohio (俄亥俄州) because he had to use the bathroom. Instead of turning off the engine (引擎) and taking the key with him, the driver left the bus running. And he forgot to set the brake (制动器) because he was in a hurry. “It was cold outside, and I didn’t want the kids to get cold while I was using the bathroom,” he told a police officer.
The bus slowly started moving away from the gas station. As the bus picked up speed, the kids began shouting and crying. Ten-year-old Jake ran forward to the driver’s seat and held the
steering wheel (方向盘). He pressed hard on the brake pedal (踏板) and managed to stop the bus as it came nearer to a river bed. Jake turned off the engine at last. After the police arrived at the scene, they praised Jake for his great effort.
“That is one cool kid,” said the police officer. “I told him he would make a great police officer when he grew u p.”
Jake wasn’t very excited with what he had done. He said that stopping the bus was easy just like playing Grand Theft Auto III, which was his favorite action video game. The bus driver was taken to the police station. He was at first charged (指控) with “leaving a child alone while motor is running.” The police officer said he hoped to upgrade the charge because o f the number of children (twenty) on the bus.
“Whatever he is charged with,” the police officer said, “I will see that he never drives a bus a gain.”

My parents were away for a whole week. They were visiting my grandparents in a city almost 200 kilometers away. 41 How wonderful! I could do everything by myself. I could cook and use the washing machine. I told my parents I would remember to lock the door when I went out. 42
But something wrong did happen! I was watching television one night when the screen suddenly went black. When I checked, I found that the lights would not work either. 43 There was no electricity!

Dear head teacher, teachers, parents and fellow students. I’m very proud that you have chosen me to speak to you today.
I have three roses here: a red one, a yellw one and a white one. These roses are to thank three groups of people for the three most important things that I have learnt. These three things are friendship, effort and trust.
I give the red rose to my friends. When I started school here, my Chinese was not good, and some of my mistakes were very funny. I once tried to say “xiexie”, but I said “xiaxia” instead. Of course some people laughed, and I felt quite silly. But they were not laughing at me. They not only taught me to say many things in Chinese but also told me many interesting customs in China. She ran along with me, and she said, “You only really lose if you give up! ” I still can’t run fast enogh, but I’ve learnt to try my best not only with running but with whatever else I do.
I give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust. When I wanted to learn the violin, my father told me that I should work harder at maths. I was disappointed. Then, on the morning of my birthday, I woke up to find a beautiful violin at my bedside. There was a note from my father: “I’m sure you will be good at music. I know that you will be better at maths. ”
I’m sure that you all have your own memories about the happiness of the last three years, and the peo ple whom you want to thank for it, so let’s all stand up and say: “Thank you, friends, teachers and parents! We love you! ”
