AFor my 8th birthday my gift was a shiny blue bike. My elder sisters decided to teach me to ride. We lived on Edgewood Avenue at the top of a steep hill. My sisters, Agnes and Christina, put me on my bike and pushed me hard, yelling instructions, “Pedal(踩踏板)! Control the direction! Use the brakes!” Needless to say, I was thrown down the street wildly trying to hold on. I crashed to the sidewalk, skinning my knees, injuring my hands and crying loudly. Instead of offering sympathy, my sisters yelled at me because I hadn’t listened to their instructions. Weeks passed beforeI tried again. This time I walked my bike to the empty parking lot behind the schoolyard.I kept repeating the instructions to myself and after a few awkward attempts and even more painful falls, I learned to ride a bike.Learning life lessons is a lot like learning to ride a bike. Some life lessons are painful to learn. We don’t always h ave the chance to choose where we learn them, we don’t always have good teachers and we are not always ready. Sometimes we find ourselves wildly trying to hold on.My husband, Rich, taught my sons to ride a bike. First he raised their training wheels slightly and they rode around the block getting used to the unsteady feeling. Then he would run alongside the bike holding on to the seat to steady them. Up and down our street they would go with Rich calling out, “You almost have it! You’re doing great!” until my sons would call out “Let go”. Rich would let go but still run along, just in case. It was a happy day in the neighborhood. When the life lessons come along in this New Year, may you learn them from a patient and kind teacher. May you learn them surrounded by support and encouragement. And may you have someone stay by your side until you have found victory. Also, may you never find yourself on a bike at the top of Edgewood Avenue with my sisters behind you.21. I like that now I can throw a football further than when I didn’t have hands,” he said. The nation’s youngest hand-transplant patient has been working hard to learnhow to use his new hands. He lost his hands and his feet 7 years ago after suffering from a serious infection. In August, the boy showed off his new abilities by throwing out the first ball at a baseball ga me. Dr. Scott Levin, team leader of Zion’s operation, said Zion was faced with the operation much braver than many adults. “I’ve never seen Zion cry,” Levin said. “He’s just an amazing boy. He has such courage and determination and gives us all inspiration.”Zion said his courage came from the two most amazing people: his mom and his grandma. His mother, Pattie Ray, said, “It’s been a long journey but now I feel like I am living in my dream. It’s his dream, and it’s mine, too. I’m just living through him, a nd I’m just here to support him in any way and help him do whatever he wants to do.”However,Zion told reporters his mom wouldn’t let him try out for football. His mom said it’s too dangerous. She also pointed out that he might be playing against little kids, not professionals, and she told him they would discuss it later. Zion tried to counter her argument. “My next goal: convince Mom to let me play football,” he said.28. What is Zion’s attitude towards his transplanted hands?A. He likes them a lotB. CommentDDo you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This mightbe called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the tro uble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy-peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles each member of the family has.You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours.32. What is the best title of the passage?A. Change Your HabitsB.
