是一位任劳任怨，勤劳、善良、贤惠的女子。她与福贵风雨同舟相濡以沫，是福贵“活着”的一条重大精神支柱。但就在福贵一无所有时，当她听说福贵已经彻底戒了赌之后，她又回到了福贵身边与他共患难。
他是一个掠夺不义之财的暴发户。靠赌博赢走了福贵的全部家产后变为土财主。解放后被划分为地主。他看到要没收他的房产时不服气，一把火烧掉了那所宅子。之后被定为“反革命破坏罪”，判处枪决。
死亡的重复发生，既给人物心灵巨大打击，也给读者出乎意料的震撼。放大了“苦难”的广度和深度，使渺小而软弱的人物面对巨大的“苦难”形成的力量悬殊，从而产生一种强烈的命运感；从而使整部作品充满了艺术张力。

five years and later turned to fiction writing in 1983
One of the distinctive characteristics of his work is his penchant for detailed descriptions of brutal violence. In this book, Yu used relatively cold, but realistic language to describe how much pain and sadness a human being could actually hold and still bravely stand in front of the fate.
