What Is Revenge BedtimeProcrastination? Sleep procrastinationin general takes two main forms: eitherdelaying the act of getting into bed(called bedtime procrastination) orputting off actually truing to sleepeven once in bed (called while-in-bedprocrastination). The Sleep Foundationdefines revenge bedtime procrastination as “the decision to sacrifice sleep for leisure time that is driven by a daily schedule lacking in free time.”In other words, it occurs when people stay up late at night to do things they enjoy, such as scrolling the internet or watching TV, because they feel like they lack the freedom to do these things during the daytime. The revenge aspect of RBP explains how someone has the desire for retribution and retaliation by doing something spiteful after they’ve been wronged. In this case, people engage in RBP because they feel like they deserve to after their day has been spent on things they didn’t enjoy doing, typically work or schoolwork. This explains why RBP is also called “retaliatory staying up late.”Experts consider revenge bedtime procrastination to have three main components:A reduction in total sleep time due to going to sleep late. We are learning more and more every dayabout just how smart some animals are: apes, octopuses, some species of birds, dogs, cats. Buthow about other animals? Snails? Mosquitos? They sure seem less smart. Still smarter than plantsthough. Because it would be difficult to argue thatplants are intelligent. Or would it?In a new study, it was shown that plants emitsounds when they are distressed. And these soundsare very different depending on whether they haverecently been cut or whether they don't haveenough water. The sounds are not audible to the human ear, as they are between 20 and 100 kilohertz, which is above the threshold of human hearing (which usually has the upper limit of 15-17 kilohertz). These are fascinating results. But we should be careful with what the study shows and what it doesn't. It is tempting to frame these results as "crying" and that is exactly what the popular science press has been doing. Plants don't suffer in silence: they are screaming with pain. This is a beautiful illustration of how easily we slip into anthropomorphizing not just animals, but also plants. Anthropomorphism is the attitude of attributing human-like features and mental states to animals (and plants). It has been widely discredited in biology as an unproductive method for finding out more about animal cognition (and also about how plants function). (A much more promising method would be the exact opposite of anthropomorphism, what could be called zoomorphism, when we attribute features and mental states that we know from the study of animals to humans.)Anthropomorphism makes it easier to relate to findings like the one about plants emitting sound —crying in distress is something that resonates with us more than the scientific language读后强化训练I. 1. What is the author's attitude towards plants being able to make sounds?A. Subjective.B. Favourable.C. Anxious.D. Disapproving.3. Which section of the magazine may this article be seen?A. 阅读理解A(2024·浙江1月高考题) On September 7, 1991, the costliest hailstorm (雹暴) in Canadian history hit Calgary's southern suburbs. As a result, since 1996 a group of insurance companies have spent about $2 million per year on the Alberta Hail Suppression Project. Airplanes seed threatening storm cells with a chemical to make small ice crystals fall as rain before they can grow into dangerous hailstones. But farmers in east-central Alberta—downwind of the hail project flights—worry that precious moisture (水分) is being stolen from their thirsty land by the cloud seeding.Norman Stienwand, who farms in that area, has been addressing public meetings on this issue for years. “Basically, the provincial government is letti ng the insurance companies protect the Calgary-Edmonton urban area from hail,” Mr. Stienwand says, “but they're increasing drought risk as far east as Saskatchewan.”The Alberta hail project is managed by Terry Krauss, a cloud physicist who works for Weath er Modification Inc. of Fargo, North Dakota. “We affect only a very small percentage of the total moisture in the air, so we cannot be causing drought,” Dr. Krauss says. “In fact, we may be helping increase the moisture downwind by creating wetter ground.”One doubter about the safety of cloud seeding is Chuck Doswell, a research scientist who just retired from the University of Oklahoma. “In 1999, I personally saw significant tornadoes (龙卷风) form from a seeded storm cell in Kansas,” Dr. Doswell says. “Doe s cloud seeding create killer storms or reduce moisture downwind? No one really knows, of course, but the seeding goes on.”Given the degree of doubt, Mr. Stienwand suggests, “it would be wise to stop cloud seeding.” In practice, doubt has had the opposite effect. Due to the lack of scientific proof concerning their impacts, no one has succeeded in winning a lawsuit against cloud-seeding companies. Hence, private climate engineering can proceed in relative legal safety.

make contributions to…(对……

Early one cold November morning, my mother dressed me in thick clothes. “Now come outside with me.” she said. Once outside, she handed me a brown paper bag that held something that smelled like wet dirt.” We need to plant bulbs before the first hard freeze. I have already dug the holes.” she said. “So take each bulb from the bag, drop it in the hole, and then gently push the dirt back into the hole covering the bulb—like so.”I opened the bag. “These bulbs are ugly and look dead!”“You're right. They’re not at all pretty. But they’re not dead; they’re just sleeping until spring.”“And all the bulbs look alike,” I continued. “How do we know what they’ll look like next spring?”“We won’t know for sure until spring, but that’s the joy of gardening. We’ll just have to be patient.”All winter long I hoped that the flowers would bloom some day.One day in late April, I found some pink pushing up through the ground. My mother was excited when I showed her. "Perfect!” she said. “They'll be ready at just the right time.”A few days later, she took me to the local store where she gathered up colored paper, colored ribbons, and all the baskets on sale. “Okay, now we’re ready to make May baskets.”“May baskets? What are May baskets?”“They are small baskets filled with fresh flowers and secretly left at someone’s front door.” Her eyes shone with delight. “So when we get home we’ll cut the flowers that are blooming in the garden to make May baskets. Then tomorrow, May first, we’ll get up early and take them to our neighbors. Doesn’t that sound like fun?”“But I waited all winter for the flowers to bloom, and they’re so beautiful. And... and (I)thought we would keep them forever,” I said, close to tears.“I know you’re disappointed, sweetie, but flowers—like kindness—are meant to be shared. Their beauty is not ours to keep. You understand?” my mother replied in a tender voice.注意:1.续写词数应为150 左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解It was just before 8 a.m. on October 17, 2010.She'd checked the higher summits forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left. Based on her experience, Bales knew that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two plans and extra layers of clothing to better regulate her temperature as conditions changed. At 10:30 a.m., the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added even more layers, including a jacket to protect herself from the cold winds and heavy fog. She made her way across the snow—covered ridge toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day. Then she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She'd been following faint tracks all day and hadn't given them much thought, because so many people climbed Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of sneakers. She silently scolded the absent hiker for breaking normal safety rules and walked on.Now she felt genuinely alarmed. She was sure the hiker could not navigate(找到方向)in the low visibility and was heading straight toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf Wilderness. Bales stood there, shocked. The temperature and clouds were in a race to find their lowest point, and darkness was mere hours away. If Bales continued to follow the tracks, she'd add risk and time to the route she'd already adjusted to manage both. But she could not let this go. She turned to the left and called out, "Hello!" into the frozen fog.Bales wouldn't get an answer until a week later, when the president of her rescue group received a letter in the mail. It read: "I hope this reaches the right group of rescuers. I want to remain anonymous(匿名的), but I was called John. On Sunday, October 17, I went up my favorite trail, Jewell, to end my life.
