选修6 Unit 3 A healthy life-ReadingADVICE FROM GRANDADDear James,It is a beautiful day here and I am sitting under the big tree at the end of the garden. I have just returned from a long bike ride to an old castle. It seems amazing that at my age I am still fit enough to cycle 20 kilometres in an afternoon. It's my birthday in two weeks time and I'll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life I live. This brings me to the real reason for my letter, my dear grandson. Your mother tells me that you started smoking some time ago and now you are finding it difficult to give it up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and how tough it is to stop. You see, during adolescence I also smoked and became addicted to cigarettes.By the way, did you know that this is because you become addicted in three different ways? First, you can become physically addicted to nicotine, which is one of the hundreds of chemicals in cigarettes. This means that after a while your body becomes accustomed to having nicotine in it. So when the drug leaves your body, you get withdrawal symptoms. I remember feeling bad-tempered and sometimes even in pain. Secondly, you become addicted through habit. As you know, if you do the same thing over and over again, you begin to do it automatically. Lastly, you can become mentally addicted. I believed I was happier and more relaxed after having a cigarette, so I began to think that I could only feel good when I smoked. I was addicted in all three ways, so it was very difficult to quit. But I did finally manage. When I was young, I didn't know much about the harmful effects of smoking. I didn't know, for example, that it could do terrible damage to your heart and lungs or that it was more difficult for smoking couples to become pregnant. I certainly didn't know their babies may have a smaller birth weight or even be abnormal in some way. Neither did I know that my cigarette smoke could affect the health of non-smokers. However, what I did know was that my girlfriend thought I smelt terrible. She said my breath and clothes smelt, and that the ends of my fingers were turning yellow. She told me that she wouldn't go out with me again unless I stopped! I also noticed that I became breathless quickly, and that I wasn't enjoying sport as much. When I was taken off the school football team because I was unfit, I knew it was time to quit smoking.I am sending you some advice I found on the Internet. It might help you to stop and strengthen your resolve. I do hope so because I want you to live as long and healthy a life as I have.Love fromGrandad。

Tina wants Sara to go to a disco with her, but Sara is nervous about going.Part 1T: I’m going to Belle’s Karaoke Bar and Disco tonight with some friends. Why don’t you come too?S: Oh. I’m sorry, I can’t.T: Oh, come on. You never go out anywhere.S: To tell you the truth, I’m too nervous.T: What are you nervous about?S: Well, suppose someone offers me drugs?T: Just say “no”. You don’t have to do a nything you don’t want to. S: Maybe t hey’ll think I’m stupid.T: Nonsense. Lots of people don’t take drugs. Who cares what they think anyway?S: You know I’ve never drunk alcohol either.T: Well, i t’s OK to drink orange juice or something instead.S: Yeah, but I’d really like to try beer, only I’m frightened I might get drunk.T: Then only have one beer and drink it slowly. And it would be a good idea to have something to eat before you go out, like rice ornoodles.S: Thanks.Part 2T: Any more worries?S: Another thing that worries me is that I might start smoking again. I used to smoke and it was really hard to stop.T: Yes, I know what you mean. I found the same. So we need to help each other. If someone offers you a cigarette, don’t take it. What can I do for you today?L: Well, I’ve been getting a lot of headaches lately.D: Mmm?L: And I feel tired all the time. The problem i s that I’ve got so much work to do, but my headaches and I keep wanting to go to sleep.D: I see. Are you sleeping well?L: No, not really.D: Mmmm. Now let’s see. You’re preparing the College Entrance Exams, aren’t you?L: Yes, that’s right. I’ve got so much to do but I can’t do it when I’m feeling so ill.D: Well, don’t get upset. We’ll sort it out.L: I hope so.D: OK. Well, I have to do some tests to rule out anything physical, but I really think the problem is stress.L: Stress?D: Yes. How much time do you study each day?L: I don’t know. As much as I can.D: And how much time do you take to relax?L: None at all. I don’t have relaxing time.D: I know it’s difficult. I know this is a very busy time for you now that you are preparing for the College Entrance Examination. So I want to tell you about what happened to me last year, and hope you don’t make the mistake I made. Are some of you worried about your exams? Well, I am here today to tell you that it’s OK to worry a little, but be careful about worrying too much. You see, what I did was to worry so much that all I did was study from morning to night. I never relaxed properly and in the end I became ill.I started to have headaches, I didn’t sleep well, I didn’t feel like eating and I was tired all the time. In the end I couldn’t study any more becausemy head hurt so badly that I kept falling asleep in class. Finally I went to the doctor and that’s how I learned about stress.Part 2The doctor explained to me that to do well in your exams you should keep a balance in your life. If you don’t take time out to relax and enjoy yourself, you may become ill. You must balance work with rest. You need to have fun. You need to keep in touch with your friends and do some exercises every day. You may be surprised to find how much better you feel after even a small break. So, my advice to you today is to think carefully about your physical and mental health. Just take 30 minutes a day to get some fresh air, do some exercise or meet friends. That will make all the difference. Don’t feel guilty if you see a film, go riding in the country or go hiking once a week. I promise you it will help your schoolwork. Thank you for listening to me and I hope you find my advice useful. (sound of audience clapping)。
