Mike experienced a terrible hard time. Mike had a terrible hard time.
Do you understand my meaning, sir? = Do you take my meaning, sir?I will preside over the meeting. = I will take the meeting.I will subscribe to the local newspaper. = I will take the local newspaper. They occupied the city. = They took the city. The boy resembles his father. = The boy takes after his father.
I remember the first time I took the English postgraduate entrance exam. It was nerve-wracking, to say the least. The pressure was intense, and I felt like my brain was going to explode. But I managed to pull through, and I'm proud of myself for that. The reading comprehension section was particularly challenging. The passages were long and complex, and I had to really focus to understand the main ideas and details. I remember feeling a sense of relief when I finished that part of the exam. The writing section was a whole different story. I had to write two essays in a limited amount of time, and my mind was racing to come up with coherent arguments and examples. It was definitely a test of my writing skills and time management. The vocabulary and grammar section was a breezecompared to the other parts. I've always been good with words, so I felt pretty confident as I breezed through the multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blanks exercises.Overall, the experience was exhausting but also exhilarating. I pushed myself to the limit and proved to myself that I was capable of handling the challenges that come with pursuing a higher education. And now, as I look back on that experience, I can't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.。
The following is an example of a graduate English exam essay from 2013:Title: The Impact of Technology on EducationIn today's fast-paced and technology-driven world, the role of technology in education has become increasingly important. With the rise of computers, the internet, and mobile devices, students now have access to a wealth of information and resources that were unimaginable just a few decades ago. This essay will explore the ways in which technology has impacted education, both positively and negatively. One of the most obvious benefits of technology in education is the ability to access information quickly and easily. With a few clicks of a mouse or taps on a screen, students can access thousands of articles, books, and websites on any subject imaginable. This has revolutionized the way students learn, allowing them to explore topics in depth and at their own pace.Furthermore, technology has also made education more interactive and engaging. With the use of multimedia tools such as videos, animations, and virtual reality, teachers can create dynamic and interactive lessons that capture the attention ofstudents and make learning more enjoyable. This has been shown to improve student engagement and retention of information. On the other hand, technology in education also has its drawbacks. One of the main concerns is the potential for distraction. With the constant barrage of notifications, messages, and social media updates, students can easily become distracted and lose focus on their studies. This can lead to decreased academic performance and a lack of concentration.Additionally, there is a growing concern about the impact of technology on social skills and communication. With the rise of online communication and social media, students may be spending less time interacting with others face-to-face, leading to a decline in interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in person. In conclusion, while technology has undoubtedly revolutionized education and provided numerous benefits, it is important to also consider the potential drawbacks. It is crucial for educators to strike a balance between using technology as a tool for learning and ensuring that students are not overly reliant on it. By doing so, we can harness the power of technology toenhance education while also preserving the value of traditional teaching methods.。
Topic: The Importance of Setting Goals。
Setting goals is an important part of achieving success in life. Without goals, we are like a ship without a rudder, drifting aimlessly with no direction or purpose. Goals give us direction, focus, and motivation. They help us toidentify what we want to achieve and how we can get there. In this essay, I will explore the importance of setting goals and how it can help us to achieve success in our personal and professional lives.Firstly, setting goals helps us to define what we wantto achieve. It is important to have a clear idea of what we want to accomplish, whether it is in our personal or professional lives. By setting goals, we can identify our priorities and focus our efforts on achieving them. For example, if our goal is to get a promotion at work, we can identify the skills and experience we need to acquire to achieve this goal. This will help us to focus our effortson developing these skills and gaining the necessary experience.Secondly, setting goals helps us to stay motivated. When we have a clear idea of what we want to achieve, it is easier to stay motivated and focused on our goals. We are more likely to work hard and persevere in the face of challenges and setbacks. For example, if our goal is to run a marathon, we are more likely to stick to our training schedule and push ourselves to achieve our goal.Thirdly, setting goals helps us to measure our progress. By setting specific and measurable goals, we can track our progress and see how far we have come. This can be a great source of motivation and encouragement, as we can see the results of our hard work and dedication. For example, ifour goal is to lose weight, we can track our progress by weighing ourselves regularly and measuring our body fat percentage. This can help us to stay on track and make adjustments to our diet and exercise routine as needed. In conclusion, setting goals is an important part ofachieving success in life. It helps us to define what we want to achieve, stay motivated, and measure our progress. Whether it is in our personal or professional lives, setting goals can help us to focus our efforts and achieve our dreams. So, take some time to think about what you want to achieve and set some goals to help you get there.。
Directions:Write an essay of 160-200 words based on the following drawing. In your essay, you should1) describe the drawing briefly,2) explain its intended meaning, and thenYou should write neatly on ANSWER SHEET 2. As is symbolically illustrated in the cartoon, a large number of people are surfing on line within a stretching spider web, either to entertain themselves or to meet the work's needs. Unfortunately, it seems rather ironic to present people separated from each other by the spider web when they attempt to communicate. Undoubtedly, the spider web serves as a symbol of Internet, both connecting people and isolating them from each other. The metaphorical and impressive portrayal has subtly revealed the duality of the relationship between man and Internet. On the one hand, there is no denying that Internet is currently one of the most efficient media used for interpersonal communication. As a college student, I get on line every day to discuss news with other people on BBS, to study English by registering for web courses, to chat freely through MSN Messenger with my friends. But on the other hand, a good many people admit that they are too much addicted to Internet to maintain face-to-face contact with their friends and colleagues. Once indulged in the fictitious world, people feel reluctant to approach others and to concentrate on real life. That's why some people have lost the skill of direct contact and get alienated from others.Hence, it is necessary for us to use Internet in a reasonable way and restrain from overindulgence. After all, Internet is invented to connect you and me, and to bring conveniences to our life rather than set a barrier to keep people beyond reach. 1. Oh my god, I can't believe I actually made itthrough the grueling process of preparing for the GRE exam. It was like a never-ending nightmare of vocabulary drills, practice tests, and anxiety attacks. But hey, I guess all the hard work paid off in the end.2. So there I was, sitting in the exam room, staring at the computer screen in front of me. The clock was ticking, my heart was racing, and I could feel the pressure mounting. But I took a deep breath, reminded myself to stay calm, and dove headfirst into the first question.3. Time seemed to fly by as I worked my way through the various sections of the exam. Reading comprehension, analytical writing, quantitative reasoning – each one presenting its own unique challenges. But I refused to let myself get overwhelmed. I stayed focused, stayed determined, and pushed through to the very end.4. And then, finally, it was over. I clicked the submit button, closed my eyes, and let out a sigh of relief. It was done. I had given it my all, and now all I could do was wait for the results to come in.5. Weeks went by, and the anticipation was killing me. Every time my phone buzzed with a notification, my heart skipped a beat. And then, one day, it happened. I got the email I had been waiting for. I hesitated for a moment, took a deep breath, and opened it.6. And there it was, staring back at me in black and white – my GRE score. I couldn't believe my eyes. So now, as I look back on the whole experience, I can't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. I appreciate the opportunity of having worked here with you and other colleagues.
Title: The Impact of Globalization on Traditional Cultures Chapter 1: Introduction- Brief overview of globalization and its impact on various aspects of society- Importance of studying the impact on traditional cultures- Purpose and structure of the paperChapter 2: The Concept of Traditional Culture- Definition of traditional culture and its significance- Examples of traditional cultures around the world- Preservation and transmission of traditional culturesChapter 3: The Effects of Globalization on Traditional Cultures - Loss of cultural diversity due to globalization- Westernization and its impact on traditional cultures- Influence of technology and mass media on traditional cultures - Economic factors eroding traditional practices and skills Chapter 4: Responses and Adaptations to Globalization- Efforts to preserve traditional cultures- Cultural revitalization and renaissance movements- Successful examples of cultural preservation- Importance of education and awareness in safeguarding traditional culturesConclusion:- Recap of the main points discussed in the paper- Emphasis on the significance of preserving traditional cultures ina globalized world- Call for collective efforts to protect and respect traditional culturesNote: This is a general outline and can be further expanded upon to meet the desired word count and flow of the paper.Chapter 1: IntroductionGlobalization is the process of increased interconnectedness and interdependence among countries, economies, and societies through the exchange of goods, services, information, and ideas. While globalization has brought about numerous benefits such as increased economic growth and access to new technologies, it has also led to the homogenization and eroding of traditional cultures around the world. This paper aims to explore the impact of globalization on traditional cultures, highlighting the challenges faced by these cultures and the various responses and adaptations taken to preserve and protect them.Chapter 2: The Concept of Traditional CultureTraditional culture refers to the shared beliefs, customs, values, rituals, and practices that have been passed down through generations within a society. These cultures are deeply rooted in the history and heritage of a community and reflect its unique identity. Traditional cultures can be found in various forms, such as indigenous cultures, folk cultures, and religious cultures. They play a vital role in shaping the social fabric and providing a sense of belonging and identity to individuals.Chapter 3: The Effects of Globalization on Traditional CulturesGlobalization has had a significant impact on traditional cultures, often leading to their decline and loss. One of the major effects of globalization is the loss of cultural diversity. As societies become more interconnected, cultural assimilation and the spread of dominant global cultures have led to the erosion of traditional practices, languages, and knowledge.Another consequence of globalization is the Westernization of traditional cultures. Western cultural norms, values, and lifestyles have permeated societies around the world through media, advertising, and popular culture. This has led to the dilution and even abandonment of traditional practices and beliefs. Younger generations are often more influenced by Western ideals, resulting in the erosion of traditional values and customs.Furthermore, advancements in technology and mass media have also played a role in shaping traditional cultures. The access to global platforms and media outlets has led to the diffusion of ideas and lifestyles, impacting traditional cultures. Traditional modes of communication and artistic expressions have become marginalized, with modern forms of entertainment taking precedence. Economic factors also contribute to the decline of traditional cultures. Globalization has led to the expansion of market economies and the rise of consumerism. Traditional practices and skills, often rooted in subsistence agricultural or artisanal activities, struggle to compete in the globalized economy. As a result, traditional livelihoods are threatened, and younger generations areless inclined to continue ancestral practices.Chapter 4: Responses and Adaptations to GlobalizationDespite the challenges posed by globalization, many communities have taken proactive measures to preserve and protect their traditional cultures. Efforts to preserve traditional cultures involve recognizing the importance of cultural diversity and the need to safeguard traditional knowledge and practices. Many communities have established cultural centers, museums, and festivals to showcase and celebrate their traditions. Indigenous communities, in particular, have advocated for their rights and the protection of traditional territories.Cultural revitalization and renaissance movements have also gained traction. These movements focus on reclaiming and revitalizing traditional practices, languages, and knowledge. They often involve intergenerational dialogue and active engagement of younger members in promoting and preserving traditional cultures. Such movements are essential in ensuring that traditional cultures continue to evolve and thrive in a changing world.Successful examples of cultural preservation can be seen in instances where traditional cultures have gained recognition and support from governmental and non-governmental organizations. Programs and initiatives that provide funding, education, and resources for the protection and promotion of traditional cultures have proved effective in safeguarding cultural diversity. Education and awareness play a crucial role in preservingtraditional cultures. By educating younger generations about their cultural heritage, the importance of cultural diversity, and the threats posed by globalization, communities can instill a sense of pride and responsibility in the preservation of their traditions.ConclusionIn a globalized world, the preservation and protection of traditional cultures are of utmost importance. Traditional cultures hold immense value as they provide communities with a sense of identity, belonging, and continuity. The impact of globalization on these cultures is undeniable, with the loss of cultural diversity, Westernization, and economic factors eroding traditional practices. However, communities have responded by implementing various strategies to safeguard their traditions. It is essential for individuals, communities, and governments to recognize the value of traditional cultures and work collectively to ensure their preservation for future generations. By standing united in the face of globalization, traditional cultures can continue to thrive alongside the benefits of a globalized world.。
