Chapter Seven American Education1. Features of American educationEducational institutions in the U.S. reflect the nation’s basic values, especially the ideal of equality of opportunity. Americans believe that everyone has both the right and the obligation to become educated; Americans regard education as the most important factor in determining a person’s social role and economic prospects.America has had a great respect for education from its earliest times: The first group of Puritans came to the new world in 1620 to avoid being persecuted in England and seek the freedom to practice their religion – a freedom they could not enjoy in their native countrythey went on board the ship known as Mayflower and established the Plymouth Colony in New EnglandIn the subsequent years, more Puritans came and founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. The public schools in the inner city are predominantly composed of Afro-American students and often share the neighborhood problems of high crime rates and other forms of social disorder. These schools were clearly unequal to those in the predominantly white, middle-class neighborhoods in the suburbs. The largest percentage of the money for schools comes from the local level (cities and counties), mainly from property taxes. School districts that have middle-class or wealthy families have more tax money to spend on education; therefore, wealthier school districts have beautiful school buildings with computers and the latest science equipment, and poorer school districts have older buildings with less modern equipment.There is no national curriculum, and textbooks are chosen by the state or local educational authorities, but certain subjects are taught at all schools across the country. A machine called a press is often used. The first step in pressing the oil from seeds is to crush the seeds between two stones.A cloth container or bag is filled with the crushed seeds. It has more than 120 million books and other objects. It has newspapers, popular publications and letters of historical interest. It also has maps, photographs, art prints, movies, sound recordings and musical instruments. The Library of Congress is open to the public Monday through Saturday, except for government holidays. Anyone may go there and read anything in the collection. But no one is permitted to take books out of the building. The Library of Congress provides books and materials to the United States Congress. It also lends books to other American libraries, government agencies and foreign libraries. It buys some of its books and gets others as gifts. It also gets materials through its copyright office. Anyone who wants copyright protection for a publication must send two copies to the library. This means the Library of Congress receives almost everything published in the United States.28 TheatreIn many parts of the world, "going to the theatre" is seen as an activity which only a very few people do. "Theatre" is not often seen as being a pastime that many ordinary people do. Ordinary people watch TV, or go to the cinema, or go out to eat with friends. The theatre is for rich, upper-class intellectuals. Like a lot of obvious remarks, there is some truth in this. Theatre tickets are quite expensive. They cost more than cinema tickets. Theatres which show new plays are usually only in big cities. However, even though this is true, there are a lot of theatre companies who are challenging this idea. And the way they are challenging this idea is by working with schools. In the UK, many theatre companies now have an "educational department". They go into schools and help students to understand and enjoy the plays they do.29 GuitarProbably no other musical instrument is as popular around the world as the guitar. Musicians use the guitar for almost every kind of music. Country and western music would not be the same without a guitar. The traditional Spanish folk music could not exist without a guitar. The sound of American blues music would not be the same without the sad cry of the guitar. And rock and roll music would almost be impossible without this instrument. Music experts do not agree about where the guitar first was played. Most agree it is ancient. Some experts say an instrument very much like a guitar was played in Egypt more than 1,000 years ago. Some other experts say that the ancestor of the modern guitar was brought to Spain from the ancient Iran sometime in the 12th century. The guitar continued to develop in Spain. In the 1700s it became similar to the instrument we know today.30 American's Leisure ActivitiesLeisure activities include things like watching television,seeing friends or exercising. Both men and women reported that they spent about half their leisure time watching television. Visiting friends and attending social events was the next most common leisure activity for both sexes. The average adult spends almost two hours a day on household activities like cooking, cleaning and paying bills. Women spend more time on child care and housework than men do even when the women are employed. Men, however, spend more time at work. Men also spend more time on leisure activities and sports. You would think that one would choose a college based solely on academic merit and its programs. That would be the most logical way to go about it. However, for American students, there are a number of other factors, that some may argue are less important, but weigh heavily in this decision.Location, location, locationWhen my mom was young, growing up as the daughter of two immigrants, she had only one college in mind. Harvard. It was, in hermind, and her parent’s minds, the best college in America. Therefore there was no reason to go anywhere else. Plus it was clo se to Lexington, where they lived. Thankfully, she went there and enjoyed going there. It was not as if she was forced to and being a Harvard graduate is no small task. However, she definitely did not go through the college selection process the way kids do today.For many people, one of the most important factors in choosing a college is where the campus is located. This may seem silly to you, but many people have chosen not to go to a certain place simply because of where it is. If you think about it, it is actually not that silly. When choosing a college, you should keep in mind that this is the place you will spend at least four years of your life, In which case the environment should be somewhere you enjoy, where you will be happy. My sister is off to college in the fall, one that is located in California. California is very sunny and usually has great weather. My sister does not like New England because of the New England winters and cooler climate. For this reason, she searched mainly for colleges in warmer places. I myself currently attend Drexel University in the city of Philadelphia. For me, going to a city school was important because I love the hustle and bustle of a city. There is always someplace open to go eat, even at 3 AM. That especially comes in handy when you are pulling an all nighter to finish a paper. And you will because American students have an overwhelming tendency to leave things to the last minute.Social LifeAnother thing that matters to most American students is the people at the college. Again you are going to be living there for four years or maybe more. So you want to make sure that you are going to have a good time while you are there. For instance, what is the ratio of girls to boys at your school? My sister again, did not want to go to a certain school because in her words, “It had too many Asians.” This is ironic as she is Asian herself. My school Drexel unfortunately has a 3:1 guys to girls ratio. That means there are 3 times as many guys as there are girls. Other things to consider are what Greek Life (note 1) is like, if there are any good clubs or bars near campus, and what kind of clubs exist at that school.So as you can see, it is not always the colleges with the best test scores or the best courses that Americans look for. Often it is the ones with the nicest locales, or the best extracurriculars. After all, you are going to stay there for a while. Thus you go to university to learn a skill that you can use. In the olden days, it is to learn the classics (四书五经) and more recently science and technology. But in America, college is a chance for you to discover yourself and to develop independent thinking which is what a liberal art edu cation all about. You learn a specific skill, be it science, law, or medicine, only in graduate school. Nor does everyone need to have a skill or a profession. What an undergraduate education does is to provide young person with a general knowledge of the world and basics to be able to learn to do anything and/or any job (i.e., 通用人才). In that sense it is probably closer in spirit to the old Chinese systems of studying the classics. More recently, CP Snow’s view of “The two cultures” made educators realize that science and technology are also a necessary part of the general education of a person. The nature of a liberal arts education is also undergoing subtle changes.There is some virtue of the need to develop independent thinking in college versus the acquisition of useful knowledge. Too much of the latter - “stuffing a duck” - style of education stifles innovation and promotes conventional thinking. This is a common complaint about Chinese graduate students in American universities – they excel at answering questions but lack training in asking the right questions. On the other hand, people do question the wisdom of educating EVERY college graduate to be a “specialist in the general” but without specific knowledge or skill in anything. They are concerned with the small number of technically qualified youth we are producing and our reliance on foreign students. Fourth articleIn America, when students go to college, they often face a dilemma that many over the world do not have. Should I bring the car? We are blessed to live in a relatively wealthy nation, therefore it is not uncommon for students to have their own cars, usually used ones passed down through the family. My grandfather actuallysold his old Range Rover to Ayi for her to use. (note 1 below)Deciding whether or not to take the car with you to college depends mainly on where you are going to college. For instance if you go to a city school, it usually does not make sense to bring your car as you will have to pay for the extremely limited parking in cities, the gas, and most likely, you will not end up using it since you can get to most places by train, taxi, bike, or walking like I do. However, if you go to a school in a more rural area, it may be to your advantage to bring the car, so you can go into the city for the weekends. Are you going to a college close to home? Then maybe you should bring the car so you can drive down on weekends to visit the family. On the other hand, if you go far away, like my sister who is currently in California, then it makes no sense because it would be very silly to drive the car from Connecticut to California, and vice versa.My grandfather asked that I write these pieces from the perspective of an American student, however, I do not see any reason why this information couldn’t apply to anyone who is moving as well. If you arecurrently thinking of bringing your car to school or even buying a car once you get there, think about the following first.-Will you use it enough to make it worth bringing? This seems obvious, but you would be surprised how many things people bring to college and then end up not using it. Therefore if you are going to bring/buy a car or even anything, a new wastebasket, a fan, whatever, make sure you will use it. This goes especially for a car and you will see why in the next point.-The upkeep of a car is expensive. One of the major money drains in having a car is parking. Perhaps you are lucky enough to find a school that has plenty of free parking, but this is unlikely. In Philadelphia, there were many parking garages that charged flat rates per hour or per day. Both were ridiculously expensive.-Do you need it? This is similar to the first point. I attended Drexel, a city school in Philadelphia. While I wasthere, I never once found myself in need of my own car. There were subways, taxis, buses, but mostly I spent my time walking. If your neighborhood is safe enough, and you know your way around, I would highly recommend this just as a pastime. I would often walk throughout the city for hours on end, discovering little restaurants and shops that I probably would have missed otherwise. Take a walk. Get to know the city better. Listen to music while you walk. And above all, it is good exercise but not too strenuous. You can set your own pace, your own distance, and free your mind every so often, just by stopping and looking around. Obviously this works best for city schools but if you go to a more rural school and there is a town nearby, go for a walk and see what that town has to offer.(Note 1 added by Yu-Chi Ho: This happened in 1998, it was a Nissan pathfinder SUV not a Range Rover.
