Learning, Chinese-StyleHoward Gardner 1 For a month in the spring of 1987, my wife Ellen and I lived in the bustling eastern Chinese city of Nanjing with our 18-month-old son Benjamin while studying arts education in Chinese kindergartens and elementary schools. But one of the most telling lessons Ellen and I got in the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education came not in the classroom but in the lobby of the Jinling Hotel where we stayed in Nanjing.

Here is an English essay about the differences in parenting styles between the United States and China, with a word count of over 1000 words.Parenting Styles in the United States and China: A Comparative ExplorationThe approach to child-rearing can vary significantly across different cultures and societies. Two prominent examples are the United States and China, which often display distinct parenting philosophies and practices. Understanding these differences is crucial in navigating the complexities of raising children in a globalized world. In the United States, the dominant parenting style tends to emphasize individuality, independence, and self-expression. American parents often encourage their children to explore their interests, develop their own unique talents, and make autonomous decisions. The goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals who can think critically, make their own choices, and pursue their passions. This approach is rooted in the American cultural values of personal freedom, self-reliance, and the pursuit of happiness.American parents typically grant their children a significant degree of freedom and autonomy, allowing them to make mistakes and learn from their experiences. Failure is often seen as an opportunity for growth and resilience, rather than a source of shame or disappointment. Parents may provide guidance and support, but they generally refrain from exerting excessive control or imposing strict rules and expectations.Furthermore, American education systems tend to foster an environment that values creativity, innovation, and independent thinking. Students are encouraged to engage in open-ended discussions, challenge traditional ideas, and develop their own perspectives. The emphasis is on cultivating well-rounded individuals who can adapt to a rapidly changing world. In contrast, the Chinese approach to parenting is often characterized by a greater emphasis on academic achievement, filial piety, and collective harmony. Chinese parents typically place a strong emphasis on education, viewing it as the primary path to success and social mobility. They may set high academic standards for their children and invest significant time and resources in ensuring their children's educational attainment. The Chinese parenting style is heavily influenced by Confucianprinciples, which emphasize the importance of family, respect for elders, and the subordination of individual desires to the greater good of the collective. Chinese parents often prioritize the family's reputation and the child's ability to fulfill their filial obligations over the child's personal preferences and self-expression.As a result, Chinese parents may be more involved in their children's academic and extracurricular activities, providing extensive guidance and support. They may also be more likely to exert a higher degree of control over their children's choices, such as the selection of academic subjects, extracurricular activities, and even future career paths. The Chinese education system, in turn, tends to emphasize rote learning, exam-based assessment, and the mastery of core academic subjects. Students are often expected to conform to strict rules and regulations, and there is a strong emphasis on discipline, obedience, and the pursuit of excellence. It is important to note that these broad generalizations do not apply to all families within the United States and China. There is a wide range of diversity within each culture, and individual families may adopt a blend of different parenting approaches. Additionally, the globalization of ideas and the increasing cross-cultural exchange have led to some convergence and blending of parenting styles inrecent years.Nevertheless, the fundamental differences in the underlying cultural values and societal expectations between the United States and China continue to shape distinct parenting philosophies and practices. These differences can have significant implications for the development and well-being of children, as well as the dynamics of family relationships. For parents navigating the challenges of raising children in a multicultural world, understanding these cultural differences can be invaluable. It can help them to better empathize with and support their children, who may be exposed to diverse parenting approaches within their social and educational environments. Furthermore, it can encourage parents to critically examine their own assumptions and biases, and to adopt a more nuanced and flexible approach to parenting that considers the unique needs and circumstances of their children. In conclusion, the differences in parenting styles between the United States and China reflect the underlying cultural values, societal expectations, and educational systems of these two nations. While these distinctions can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and tensions, they also present opportunities for cross-cultural learning and the development of more holistic approaches to child-rearing.By embracing the diversity of parenting practices and finding common ground, parents can create an environment that nurtures the well-being and growth of children in a rapidly changing world.。
美国人家庭教育观念的英语作文The difference between Chinese and American education lies in the different teaching objectives of the elementary education in the two countries: = China's primary education will develop children's intelligence, children's high scores as the primary goal; and in the United States, the purpose of primary education is only one: to foster children's creativity. Attitude towards performance is different The Chinese child, a bad report card will make him receive pressure from all sides. However, in the United States, the end of each student's articles transcripts are time private. Parents do not give children too much pressure. Scores in the hearts of adults than the ability to far. But most of the students to China "the score". = The two countries are different in the view of knowledge: Education in China pays attention to the accumulation of knowledge and the cultivation of students' respect for knowledge and authority as well as the inheritance of knowledge and the construction of the system of knowledge. The United States is more emphasis on training students to use the practical ability of knowledge, pay attention to the cultivation of students' knowledge and authority of the question, critical spirit and knowledge of the expansion and creation. These two kinds of education expressed a different attitude towards knowledge: the difference between the static dynamic Chinese education with the United States, a move that reflects this static view of knowledge between the two differences.。

Parenting: What’s Suitable Is the BestChinese parenting and American parenting have been compared so far. Which one can best facilitate academic and professional success? We all have opinions. Some opinions are based on the solidness and self-discipline of Chinese parenting, some on the freedom and flexibility of American parenting. In my opinion, every coin has two sides. The best is the one that suits you most. The most obvious difference between the two kinds of parenting is that Chinese parenting focuses on children's academic performance, while American parenting pays attention to children's personality development. In China, exam results are regarded as the main criterion to evaluate the comprehensive quality of children. It tends to establish a strict examination system that emphasizes students' mastery of subject knowledge. Besides, most parents pay attention to their children's study. For example, when parents are with children, what they talk about is more related to children's study. It’s one of the reasons why children are resistance to Chinese parenting. On the contrary, American parenting focuses on the all-round development of children, emphasizing the development of individual personality and the cultivation of independent learning ability, such as social skills, leadership skills and so on. The biggest highlight of American parenting is its freedom, providing children with a free and healthy growth environment, which is popular with the majority of young people in China.According to people's active reaction to American parenting, should Chinese parenting be given up? That’s out of the question absolutely. Chinese parenting still has something to recommend. For example, it makes children have a good command of academic knowledge, with solid basic skills. However, it is best to be a person with a sound personality, which needs to learn from American parenting of attaching importance to shaping personality. Thus, it is wise to combine Chinese parenting with American parenting. In summary, it's the best only when it fits you. Therefore, on the premise of retaining the advantages of Chinese parenting, it is reasonable to learn from the suitability of American parenting, which may result in a greater impact than our individual efforts.Parenting: What’s Suitable Is the BestIn recent years, Chinese parenting and American parenting have been frequently compared due to their typically and diametrically opposed parenting styles. What kind of parenting can best facilitate academic as well as professional success? We all have opinions. Some opinions are based on the solidness and self-discipline of Chinese parenting, some on the freedom and flexibility of American parenting. Anyway, there is still no absolute answer. In my opinion, every coin has two sides. There are both advantages and disadvantages in each parenting. In general, the best is the one that suits you most. It is suggested that we should not blindly pursue a certain parenting style, but should effectively combine them, take the essence and discard the dregs, and then form a parenting suitable for us.Education is an indispensable part of our life. Dramatically, it has been a hot topic that people take delight in talking about so far. When it comes to education, it is not only teachers and school teaching but also parents and family parenting that play an important role. There is no doubt that different ways of parenting come in different cultures. So what are differences between Chinese parenting and American parenting? The most obvious answer is educational theory as well as teaching purpose. Chinese parenting tends to focus on children's academic performance, while American parenting often pays attention to children's personality development. In China, exam results are regarded as the main criterion to evaluate the comprehensive quality of students. Education departments and schools tend to establish a strict examination system that emphasizes students' mastery of subject knowledge, rather than focusing on cultivating their creativity and practical ability. In addition, most parents pay most attention to their children's study. They put too much emphasis on children's academic performance, ignoring their personality development. For example, When parents are with children, what they talk about is more related to children's study. It is one of the obvious reasons why children are resistance to Chinese parenting. On the contrary, American parenting focuses on the all-round development of children. In addition to academic knowledge, it also emphasizes the development of their individual personality and the cultivation of independent learning ability, such as social skills, communication skills, leadership skills and so on. What's more, the biggest highlight of American parenting is its freedom and flexibility, providing children with a free and healthy growth environment, which is popular with the majority of people in China, especially young people.According to people's reaction to American parenting, should Chinese parenting be given up? Actually, that is out of the question absolutely based on the national conditions and education system in China. Moreover, Chinese parenting still hassomething to recommend it. For example, children who receive Chinese parenting have a good command of academic knowledge, with solid basic skills. It's a good way to be aDown-to-earth person. Moderate discipline is the driving force for personal progress and growth. There is a comment on Chinese people that they are good at taking exams. However, Society does not need a test machine; What it needs is a person with a sound personality, which requires parents to learn from the approach of American parenting to attaching importance to the shaping of personality. Most people are not sure what they really want to do and what they are suitable for before the age of 18, or even after graduating from college. Thus, what we have learned, in addition to laying our knowledge foundation as well as our learning ideas, plays an important role in exploring suitable learning methods through practice and cultivates good learning habits. After all, the level of scores can not accurately determine whether we have mastered the correct learning methods. Under the circumstances, it is wise to combine the solidness of Chinese parenting with the freedom of American parenting. In summary, there isn't a parenting style that fits everyone. It's best only when it fits you. Therefore, on the premise of retaining the advantages of Chinese parenting, it is reasonable to learn from the suitability of American parenting, which may result in a greater impact than our individual efforts.。
Is it necessary to go to the university in US?
I desire to go to the university in US because I believe the education of US for many years. In China, we learn plenty of knowledge everyday, but how much knowledge is useful for us? Although in US, students do not have many courses between nursery school and senior high school, but they have some free time to learn what they like and more functional. For example, they can learn how to make a chair in wooding class; others can learn survival skills such as the way to climb trees and how to gather rainwater.
Americans educational method is affecting the whole life to children, especially the attitude in life and when they face the difficulties, they always want to try!
Some people think the children in US are very careless, but in fact, their parents are strict with children. When they know how to speak, the most important sentences are “Please, can I, may I”, if you need help or toys, you should take advice from others. Of course, Americans always feel uncomfortable even when people take casualty behavior, so a child can not be casually to touch another child even to crush others, it is also forbidden to say something rude.
Americans also pay attention to “modesty”and teamwork spirit. If teachers have remainder pencils, she will put these on the desk instead of give out to students, because teachers want to tell them “share and take
turns” .But in China, I am ashamed about our country happened several “a stampedes” one year ago, the reason why it occurred, because some of us do not know how to make modesty, it is connect with ours child education.
In China, when children starts cry, parents will rush there right away and dote on them until they stopped. But in US, it is different. If children casually cry in the public, parents will be serious with them and to say something such as “Y ou can not ask by harassing me.”or “Use your words.”When children cry out for long time because of a purpose, parents still firmed with their own ideas, they think if you endure your children, then children will used to communicate with you in this way. In the daily life, children have to clean up all the toys after they play out, otherwise their parents maybe drop toys to rubbish bin and warn them if you do the same things again, you will never have any toys. Some American families have a small dark room, it is used for children who can not correct the mistakes or do not obey the rules, then they should stay in there until they can understand theirs mistaken and make an apology. Of course, if children have a good job or correct the mistakes, they also can receive some praises, even awards.
Although Americans never abused or beat children, actually they can foster some tractable children, but it doesn’t means they will be silence in class. In the contrast, you can ask your questions what you can not
understand in the class. When 3 or 4 years old children having class, teachers will encourage every child to speak, the whole class is active.
In china, parents pay more attention to children’s material demand, but children can not understand, they just think they do have, so maybe Chinese parent should choose the correct measure to love children. They need nice mood and full of spirit instead of enjoy in the money or other materials. If children can learn how to be a good person, of course, they can face the life with strong and optimistic, they are going to affect theirs whole life. One day, they will be success.
As for me, go abroad to learn knowledge it will become an important turn in my life, not only to study but also to learn the positive attitude in solve problem and face the challenge. I believe this excellent spirit is good for my mind and my life, it can help me to become a better person!。
