The two months I spent with them impressed me deeply. My campers came from poor families and from different schools. At the beginning of the third week, a new camper, called Mike, joined us. In his first week he was there, he would cry every morning because he wanted to go home. He complained of not having any friends. One day in the following week he didn’t come to the camp. Many of the kids came up to me and asked me where he was and if he was ill. When I told them about Mike’s feelings, some of the kids had a guilty look on their faces, because they knew they hadn’t made him feel welcome.Thankfully, Mike showed up the next day. As he walked over to the area where our group of kids were, the entire group stood up and clapped and cheered for him. The boy was happy in the following weeks and made friends with many kids.。
