SA TISFACTION GUARANTEEDLarry Belmont worked for a company that made robots. Recently it had begun experimenting with a household robot. It was going to be tested out by Larry’s wife, Claire.Claire didn’t want the robot in her house, especially as her husband would be absent for three weeks, but Larry persuaded her that the robot wouldn’t harm her or allow her to be harmed. It would be a bonus. However, when she first saw the robot, she felt alarmed. His name was Tony and he seemed more like a human than a machine. He was tall and handsome with smooth hair and a deep voice although his facial expression never changed. On the second morning Tony, wearing an apron, brought her breakfast and then asked her whether she needed help dressing. She felt embarrassed and quickly told him to go. It was disturbing and frightening that he looked so human. One day, Claire mentioned that she didn’t think she was clever. Tony said that she must feel very unhappy to say that. Claire thought it was ridiculous to be offered sympathy by a robot. But she began to trust him. She told him how she was overweight and this made her feel unhappy. Also she felt her home wasn’t elegant enough for someone like Larry who wanted to improve his social position. She wasn’t like Gladys Claffern, one of the richest and most powerful women around. As a favour Tony promised to help Claire make herself smarter and her home more elegant. So Claire borrowed a pile of books from the library for him to read, or rather, scan. She looked at his fingers with wonder as they turned each page and suddenly reached for his hand. She was amazed by his fingernails and the softness and warmth of his skin. How absurd, she thought. He was just a machine.Tony gave Claire a new haircut and changed the makeup she wore. As he was not allowed to accompany her to the shops, he wrote out a list of items for her. Claire went into the city and bought curtains, cushions, a carpet and bedding. Then she went into a jewellery shop to buy a necklace. When the clerk at the counter was rude to her, she rang Tony up and told the clerk to speak to him. The clerk immediately changed his attitude. Claire thanked Tony, telling him that he was a “dear”. As she turned around, there stood Gladys Claffern. How awful to be discovered by her, Claire thought. By the amused and surprised look on her face, Claire knew that Gladys thought she was having an affair. After all, she knew Claire’s husband’s name was Larry, not Tony. When Claire got home, she wept with anger in her armchair. Gladys was everything Claire wanted to be. “Y ou can be like her,” Tony told her and suggested that she invite Gladys and her friends to the house the night before he was to leave and Larry was to return. By that time, Tony expected the house to be completely transformed.Tony worked steadily on the improvements. Claire tried to help once but was too clumsy. She fell off a ladder and even though Tony was in the next room, he managed to catch her in time. He held her firmly in his arms and she felt the warmth of his body. She screamed, pushed him away and ran to her room for the rest of the day.The night of the party arrived. The clock struck eight. The guests would be arriving soon and Claire told Tony to go into another room. At that moment, Tony folded his arms around her, bending his face close to hers. She cried out “Tony”and then heard him declare that he didn’t want to leave her the next day and that he felt more than just the desire to please her. Then the front door bell rang. Tony freed her and disappeared from sight. It was then that Claire realized that Tony had opened the curtains of the front window. Her guests had seen everything! The women were impressed by Claire, the house and the delicious cuisine. Just before they left, Claire heard Gladys whispering to another woman that she had never seen anyone so handsome as Tony. What a sweet victory to be envied by those women! She might not be as beautiful as them, but none of them had such a handsome lover. Then she remembered- Tony was just a machine. She shouted “Leave me alone” and ran to her bed. She cried all night. The next morning a car drove up and took Tony away. The company was very pleased with Tony’s report on his three weeks with Claire. Tony had protected a human being from harm. He had prevented Claire from harming herself through her own sense of failure. He had opened the curtains that night so that the other women would see him and Claire, knowing that there was no risk to Claire’s marriage. But even though Tony had been so clever, he would have to be rebuilt- you can not have women falling in love with machines.。
Unit 1 Text A College—A Transition Point in My Life1 When I first entered college as a freshman, I was afraid that I was not able to do well in my studies. I was afraid of being off by myself, away from my family for the first time. Here I was surrounded by people I did not know and who did not know me. I would have to make friends with them and perhaps also compete with them for grades in courses I would take. Were they smarter than I was? Could I keep up with them? Would they accept me?2 I soon learned that my life was now up to me. I had to set a study program if I wanted to succeed in my courses. I had to regulate the time I spent studying and the time I spent socializing.I had to decide when to go to bed, when and what to eat, when and what to drink, and with whom to be friendly. These questions I had to answer for myself.3 At first, life was a bit difficult. I made mistakes in how I used my time. I spent too much time making friends. I also made some mistakes in how I chose my first friends in college.4 Shortly, however, I had my life under control. I managed to go to class on time, do my first assignments and hand them in, and pass my first exams with fairly good grades. In addition, I made a few friends with whom I felt comfortable and with whom I could share my fears. I set up a routine that was really my own — a routine that met my needs.5 As a result, I began to look upon myself from a different perspective. I began to see myself as a person responsible for myself and responsible for my friends and family. It felt good to make my own decisions and see those decisions turn out to be wise ones. I guess that this is all part of what people call “growing up.”6 What did life have in store for me? At that stage in my life, I really was not certain where I would ultimately go in life and what I would do with the years ahead of me. But I knew that I would be able to handle what was ahead because I had successfully jumped this important hurdle in my life: I had made the transition from a person dependent on my family for emotional support to a person who was responsible for myself.大学——我一生中的转折点作为一名一年级新生初进大学时,我害怕自己在学业上搞不好。
unit1 AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTBarry Minto (B) has just made a successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Listen to him being interviewed on the radio by Joan (J).JOAN: Barry, welcome to our programme and congratulations on that great climb! BARRY: Thank you. It’s good to be here.JOAN: Now, Barry, it was a very special climb, wasn’t it?BARRY: Yes, that’s right. Half of the group had very bad eyesight or were blind like me, and the other half were sighted people who came along to help us. JOAN: How old were the climbers?BARRY: Well, the weak-sighted and blind group were between 16 and 19 years old. JOAN: And the sighted climbers?BARRY: Between 25 and 45.JOAN: I see. Now, why did you make such a difficult climb?BARRY: For two main reasons: one is to prove that we can achieve whatever we decide to do; the other is to raise money for other people with weak sight. JOAN: Mmm. Well done! I know Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. But how high is it?BARRY: About 5,900 metres.JOAN: That’s very high! So how many of you reach the top?BARRY: Of the 12 poor-sighted and blind climbers, 9 made it to the top. Of the 15 sighted climbers, 7 did.JOAN: Well done!BARRY: Yes, it just shows you how determined the poor-sighted and blind climbers were.JOAN: How long did it take you?BARRY: Five days to go up and two to come down.JOAN: Well, Barry, I’m full of admiration for you and your companions. What do you plan to do next?BARRY: Oh, I’m going to university next year, but my next climbing ambition is to go up Mount Qomolangma one day.JOAN: Amazing. I wish you every success in the future, Barry.BARRY: (fade out) Thanks, Joan…unit2 SATISFACTION GUARANTEEDListen to Molly (M) and Kate (K) discussing the story “Satisfaction Guaranteed”. M: Don’t you think that was a great love story, Kate?K: No, not really.M: You didn’t? Well, I loved it. There was so much emotion between Tony and Claire. K: Molly, that’s rubbish. Tony was just a machine. Yes, Claire fell in love with him, but I don’t believe robots can feel emotion of any kind. That’s the difference between them and us.M: Well, I disagree. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her that he didn’t want to leave her the next day, and that he felt more than just the wish to please her? Then he kissed her.K: Yes, Molly, that was just part of Tony’s role. They made him so he wouldn’t allow a human being to be hurt.He could see that Claire was hurting herself by her lack of confidence. So he tried to make her feel good about herself. It had nothing to do with emotion – that was just how he was made.M: Yes Kate, but he did hurt Claire.K: How?M: He was so kind to her that she fell in love with him. So it must have hurt her when he was taken away.K: True, true. I gues s that’s why the company had to rebuild him…er… the machine I mean!M: Yes, such a shame really. I’d like a robot like Tony living at my house. Imagine a handsome man whose only purpose in life is to please you!K: Actually, I suppose that was the company’s greatest mistake.M: Er?K: They made the robot look so much like a real man, so it was bound to cause trouble! M: Yes, you’re right.unit3LISTENING TEXTCOMPLAINING ABOUT A WHALE WATCHING TOURANGELA: I’m sorry but we weren’t very happy with the tour.TOUR GUIDE: Oh, what was the problem?ANGELA: Well, it was so wet we couldn’t go outside… I know we heard the whales and saw them on the video camera and that was great, but we really wanted to stand outside and watch the whales from there. What kind of things do you like doing?L : Well, I enjoy visiting historical places and I like going to museums.TA: Of course, there are many historical sites in Peru.L : Yes, but I also love mountains. I’d like to go somewhere in the Andes. And I’ve heard that the animals and plants are really beautiful.TA: Mmm. I think I know the perfect place for you.L : Oh, good.TA: It’s called Cuzco. It’s a city high up in the Andes. It’s not far from the ancient city of Machu Picchu.L : Oh, yes! I’d really like to see that.TA: You can fly from Lima, the capital of Peru, to Cuzco. We could book you into a hotel in Cuzco. Then you could take short tours from Cuzco whenever you wanted to. You’ll be able to get to lots of different places from there.L : That’s a g reat idea. I could travel to Cuzco and stay in a hotel. When I wanted some company I could join a tour group for a few days.TA: Exactly. Look, here’s a brochure with the tours from Cuzco.L : Great. Thanks. Now please how much is the airfare to Cuzco?TA: Well, it depends when you want to go… (fading out)。
落堕市安心阳光实验学校Unit 2 Robots课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解(2020·全国新高三开学联考)A robot created by Washington State University (WSU) scientists could help elderly people with dementia and other limitations live independently in their own homes. The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors (传感器) equipped in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates (定位) through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owners to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen.“RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected,” said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.Currently, about 50 per cent adults over the age of 85 need assistance with everyday activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050, researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the financial pressure on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone.RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to apply to their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that shows how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.“While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising,”Minor said. “The next step in the research will be to test RAS' performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.”篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。
