阿甘是个智商只有75的低能儿。

在学校里为了躲避别的孩子的欺侮，听从一个朋友珍妮的话而开始“跑”。

他跑着躲避别人的捉弄。

在中学时，他为了躲避别人而跑进了一所学校的橄榄球场，就这样跑进了大学。

阿甘被破格录取，并成了橄榄球巨星，受到了肯尼迪总统的接见。

在大学毕业后，阿甘又应征入伍去了越南。

在那里，他有了两个朋友：热衷捕虾的布巴和令人敬畏的长官邓·泰勒上尉。

这时，珍妮已经堕落，过着放荡的生活。

甘一直爱着珍妮，但珍妮却不爱他。

在战争结束后，甘作为英雄受到了约翰逊总统的接见。

在一次和平集会上，甘又遇见了珍妮，两人匆匆相遇又匆匆分手。

在“说到就要做到”这一信条的指引下，甘最终闯出了一片属于自己的天空。

在他的生活中，他结识了许多美国的名人。

他告发了水门事件的窃听者，作为美国乒乓球队的一员到了中国，为中美建交立下了功劳。

猫王和约翰·列侬这两位音乐巨星也是通过与他的交往而创作了许多风靡一时的歌曲。

最后，甘通过捕虾成了一名企业家。

为了纪念死去的布巴，他成立了布巴·甘公司，并把公司的一半股份给了布巴的母亲，自己去做一名园丁。

甘经历了世界风云变幻的各个历史时期，但无论何时，无论何处，无论和谁在一起，他都依然如故，纯朴而善良。

在隐居生活中，他时常思念珍妮。

而这时的珍妮早已误入歧途，陷于绝望之中。

终于有一天，珍妮回来了。

她和甘共同生活了一段日子。

在一天夜晚，珍妮投入了阿甘的怀抱，之后又在黎明悄然离去。

醒来的甘木然坐在门前的长椅上，然后突然开始奔跑。

他跑步横越了美国，又一次成了名人。

在奔跑了许久之后，甘停了下来，开始回自己的故乡。

在途中，他收到了珍妮的信。

他又一次见到了珍妮，还有一个小男孩，那是他的儿子。

这时的珍妮已经得了一种不治之症。

甘和珍妮三人一同回到了家乡，一起度过了一段幸福的时光。

珍妮过世了，他们的儿子也已到了上学的年龄。

甘送儿子上了校车，坐在公共汽车站的长椅上，回忆起了他一生的遭遇。

When Forrest is called "stupid," his mother tells him, "Stupid is as stupid does," and Forrest turns out to be incapable of doing anything. Also, when the braces finally fall from his legs, it turns out he can run like the wind. That's how he gets a college football scholarship, and eventually becomes a good runner. Gump the football hero becomes Gump the Medal of Honor winner in Vietnam, and then Gump the Ping-Pong champion, Gump the shrimp boat captain, Gump the millionaire stockholder (he gets shares in a new "fruit company" named Apple Computer), and Gump the man who runs across America and then retraces (折返) his steps. It could be argued that with his IQ (智商) of 75, Forrest does not quite understand everything that happens to him. Not so. He understands everything he needs to know. He even understands everything that's important about love, although Jenny, the girl he falls in love with in grade school and never falls out of love with, tells him, "Forrest, you don't know what love is." She is a stripper by that time.Forrest Gump is treated as a contemporary American cultural classic because of its meaningful and serious contemplation (思考) of its history. Gump lived through the campus sit-in (静坐示威), the Vietnam jungle, and the problems of Sino-American relations. He shook hands with Kennedy in the White House; he sat side by side with Lennon in the broadcasting room; he exposed Nixon’s W atergate Secret and he ran across America. The movie criticizes this war through the experience of Gump and Lieutenant. Dan. The latter lost his legs in this nightmare-like war, but he finally overcame his physical disability and spiritual bitterness and walked out of the shadows by realizing his dream of owning a shrimp fishing business.What’s more, this movie offers a remedy（补救）for the spiritual disease of modern age and fulfills people’s yearning (渴望) to go back to nature. I love you.Jenny: Forrest, you don't know what love is.Jenny turns and looks over the bridge.Jenny: You remember that time we prayed, Forrest? We prayed for God to turn me into a bird so I could fly far, far away?Forrest: Yes, I do.Jenny: You think I can fly off this bridge?Forrest: What do you mean, Jenny?Jenny: Nothing.Jenny turns and looks at the light of an approaching vehicle. Or maybe it was because she was so tired, because she went to bed and slept and slept like she hadn't slept in years. It was wonderful having her home. Every day we'd take a walk, and I'd jabber on like a monkey in a tree. And she'd listen about ping-pong and shrimpin' boat and Momma makin' a trip to heaven. I did all the talkin'. Jenny most of the time was real quiet.Scene FourKnowing where Jenny is, Forrest runs quickly to Jenny’s apartment. Jenny opens the door. Jenny: Hey! Forrest! How you doing?Forrest: Hi.Jenny: Come in. Come in.Forrest: I got your letter.Jenny: Oh, I was wondering about that.Jenny shuts the door. Forrest looks around.Forrest: Is this your house?Jenny: Yeah, it's messy right now. I just got off work.Forrest: It's nice. You got air conditioning.Forrest hands Jenny the box of chocolates.Forrest: Ah...Jenny: Thank you.Forrest: I ate some.Jenny picks up a scrapbook and turns the pages.Jenny: Hey, I kept, I kept a scrapbook of your… of your clippings and everything. There you are. This, I got your running.Forrest: I ran a long way, for a long time.Jenny: There. Listen, Forrest. I don't know how to say this. Um, I just... I want to apologize for anything that I ever did to you, 'cause I was messed up for a long time, and...There is a knock at the door. Lynn Marie enters as she opens the door.Lynn Marie: Yoo-hoo.Jenny: Hey.Lynn Marie: Hi.Jenny picks up a young boy from Lynn Marie.Jenny: Hey, you. Scene FiveForrest stands under the old oak tree where Jenny has been buried.Forrest: You died on Saturday morning, and I had you placed here under our tree.Standing in front of Jenny's grave marker, Forrest tries to hold back his tears.Forrest: And I had that house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Momma always said dying was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest, he's doing just fine. About to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth every day. Teaching him how to play ping-pong. Okay. He's really good. We fish a lot. And every night, we read a book. He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him. I am. He, uh, wrote a letter, and he says I can't read it. I'm not supposed to, so I'll just leave it here for you. Forrest places the letter down at the grave marker, next to fresh flowers. He steps back and looks down at the grave.Forrest: Jenny, I don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I… I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny.
