A Book Report on Notre Dame DE Paris
By Han Danxi, Class 1301
I have recently read the simplified version of Notre Dame DE Paris published by YILI PEOPLE’S PRESS in 2001, written by Victor Hugo in 1831.
Victor Hugo (born May 22, 1885 and died on February 26, 1802) is a poet, novelist, and dramatist and writer. Hugo followed time steps, he is an important writer in the French literary history , is the leader of the early 19th century positive romanticism literature movement.
The entire story rich tragic color, the plot intense is moving, exciting. Author thought the story of Notre Dame DE Paris also disclosed at that time the dark society essence to the people. This fascinating story shocks several generation of reader’s mind.
The gist of the story is as follows. The story begins during the Renaissance in 1482, the day of the Festival of Fools in Paris. All the people were immersed in the celebration of April Fools day. Before celebrating , the beautiful pure gypsy girl Esmeralda had a wonderful performance. The archdeacon of Notre Dame, a certain Claude Frollo, falls in lust with Esmeralda. Frollo strongly wants to own Esmeralda.,so he ordered bell ringer Quasimodo to kidnap her. But the capital of the Royal Archers Phoebus saved her. From then on, she falls mistakenly in love with his bravery. But in reality he is a rogue and a braggart. And Quasimodo was caught and whipped and ordered to be tied down in the heat. When Esmeralda knew he was thirsty, she offered him water without hesitance, which in turn made Quasimodo fall in love with her. And Quasimodo was caught and whipped and ordered to be tied down in the heat. When Esmeralda knew he was thirsty, she offered him water without hesitance, which in turn made Quasimodo fall in love with her. While Esmeralda had fallen in love with Phoebus since he rescued her, which made Frollo feel very angry. So he stabbed Phoebus at one of the appointments of them. Consequently Esmeralda was accused of the murder and was sentenced to be hanged. It was Quasimodo who saved her by bringing her to the top floor of the Notre Dame. Frollo wants to get her, after being rejected, he took her to the soldiers. And Quasimodo saw that she was hanged and he pushed Frollo off the top floor in angry. And finally he found the body of Esmeralda and died on her side. When I read the book, the comparison of beauty and ugliness in this novel has a great effect on me. This novel implies that true love does not just mean occupying but giving. In some degree, love is more of sacrifice. Perhaps the entire story is rich in tragic color. And the plot intense is moving and exciting. This is a confrontation between beautiful and ugly , but also a contest between justice and evil. In this extreme, the novel has a power to excite people's mind all of our thoughts and feelings. Maybe this is the charm of romantic novels.。
