This was going to be the best winter vacation ever!The first few days were awesome. I slept in until noon, played games online with my buddies for hours, and pretty much did whatever I wanted. My mom didn't really bug me about anything since it was still pretty early in the break. She was like "Enjoy your freedom while you can!" I think she was just happy to have me out of her hair for a little while.After about a week though, I started to get a little bored and restless just sitting around the house all day. That's when my parents decided it was time for a family road trip! We loaded up the car and headed down to Florida to visit my grandparents and go to Disney World. At first I wasn't super pumped about the 12 hour drive, but it ended up being pretty fun.We stopped at all sorts of random roadside attractions like the World's Largest Truck Stop and Reptile World. My little brother Colin thought the giant gator monsters at Reptile World were so cool. I have to admit, some of those things were totally terrifying! It was awesome being somewhere warm and sunny instead of freezing cold like back home. My grandparents have this nice big pool in their backyard that we swam in every day. They live right near the beach too so we got to go surf, build sandcastles, and search for shark teeth. I even got a little tan despite it being winter!The highlight of the trip though was definitely Disney World. We spent three whole days going to the different parks - Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. My favorite was definitely Magic Kingdom with all the classic rides like Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Splash Mountain. Splash Mountain is this huge water ride that justcompletely drenches you at the end. We must have ridden it a dozen times and got more and more soaked each time!Epcot was pretty cool too because of all the crazy futuristic rides and exhibits about new technologies. The Test Track ride where you get to design a concept car on the computer and then ride along as it gets tested at high speeds was amazing. They had a huge video game section too full of vintage games from the 80s and 90s. I could have spent days just hanging out there playing classics like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Space Invaders.Of course, no trip to Disney World would be complete without meeting the iconic Disney characters. We got our pictures taken with Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, the whole gang. They were so fun and interactive, giving hugs and cracking jokes. The buildings were so old and grand, with beautiful architecture from centuries ago. I tried traditional fish and chips, which was delicious, and even got to sample a pillowy, fresh-baked scone with clotted cream and jam. Yum!After spending a week in London, we took a train up to Edinburgh, Scotland. I loved seeing the different landscapes and countryside pass by through the window. Edinburgh felt like stepping back in time, with its medieval streets, castles, and kilted bagpipers busking on street corners.We hiked up to the famous Edinburgh Castle, which sits on top of an extinct volcano - how cool is that? Inside the castle were St. Margaret's tiny chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh, the gorgeous Great Hall lined with armor and weaponry, and luxurious royal rooms. From the castle walls, you could see for miles over the city's neighborhoods of grey stone houses with colorful doors and gardens.One of the highlights was going on a guided tour of the Blair Street Underground Vaults. These were a series of arched, dimly lit chambers constructed in the 18th century. For a long time, they were home to the poorest people in Edinburgh who had nowhere else to go. Hearing the true stories of how they suffered and lived in such darkness gave me chills.My favorite place in Scotland was the magical highlands. There was this really neat article about a kid inventor named Akash who made a bedside lamp that runs off of just one AA battery! It can stay lit for like, a whole year without having to change the battery. Isn't that crazy? I would love to have one of those lamps for my bedroom.The unit also had a dialogue about two students talking about their science fair projects. One was making a robot that can sort recyclables and the other was experimenting with solar power. I've never done a science fair before but those projects sound super fun. Maybe I'll enter next year!For the reading part, there was a short story called "The Emerald Planet" that took place in the future when Earth was really polluted and gross. But then these scientists found a way to use special micro-organisms to clean up the air and water. By the end, the planet was all green and beautiful again. It kind ofreminded me of that movie WALL-E but without the lovable robot. Still a great story though!Unit 2 was called "An Attitude of Gratitude" and it taught about being thankful and appreciating what you have. One of the texts was a fable called "The Fairy Comb" where this girl finds an magic comb that can make her hair super long and pretty. But she gets greedy and asks for more and more until the comb disappears. It just goes to show that you shouldn't be ungrateful for your blessings!There were also some super inspirational quotes about gratitude scattered throughout the unit. My favorite was "When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength." It's a nice reminder to appreciate the little things.For the writing section, we had to write a thank you letter to someone important in our life. I wrote mine to my parents to say thanks for all their love and support. I hope they liked it!Unit 3 was titled "Life in Cyberspace" and it was all about technology and the internet. We learned some really fascinating statistics, like there are over 4 billion people online and over 1 billion websites! Mind-blowing, right? This unit also taught us internet safety tips like never sharing personal information, usingstrong passwords, and being careful what you post online. Important stuff that everyone should know.There were a couple funny dialogues of kids talking about their excessive smartphone habits. Like getting caught texting at the dinner table or playing video games super late at night instead of sleeping. I could definitely relate! My parents are always nagging me about that stuff.The reading had a science fiction story that imagined what life might be like in a futuristic, hyper-connected metropolis. People could instantly video chat with 3D holograms, have smart appliances that did all their chores, and travel through virtual realms. It sounded so awesome and crazy advanced! Part of me hopes we get that level of technology someday, but part of me also thinks it might be a little too much.For the project in this unit, we had to design our own app and present it to the class. My app idea was a smart planner that helped you organize your schedule, did your homework for you, and nagged your parents about things instead of the other way around. We did an activity in class where we had to design creative ways to reuse common household items like plastic bottles and cardboard boxes. My partner and I made a really cool robot model!But the environment isn't just about animals, it's also about plants too. I found the section on rainforests fascinating. They are home to over half of all plant and animal species on our planet! But unfortunately, rainforests are being destroyed at an alarming rate. We need to protect these precious habitats. Afterthis unit, I've become much more conscious about not wasting things and reusing items instead of throwing them away.Last but not least, Unit 3 is called "Game is Fun". You bet it is! This unit was jam-packed with awesome texts and activities all about different sports and games. I especially loved reading about the origins of sports like soccer, basketball and tennis. Can you believe soccer started out as an ancient game played in China with a stuffed leather ball? How crazy is that?My highlight from this unit was definitely when we had a mini sports tournament in our English class. We split into teams and played basketball, badminton, and even had running races. I was on the yellow team and although we didn't win, it was still a total blast! I also enjoyed the reading about the Olympic Games and famous athletes like Michael Phelps. He has the most Olympic gold medals in history – 28 in total! The factsand statistics about things like rising sea levels and dwindling animal populations were really alarming.But we also read inspiring examples of young environmental activists like Greta Thunberg who are bravely raising awareness and calling for change. Her speech about her generation's future being stolen away by inaction on climate change gave me chills. I have a much deeper appreciation now for why we need to make serious efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle.For our unit project, we did a trash audit at our school over the course of a week. We sorted through all the garbage to see what types of waste made up the biggest portions. It was pretty gross to dig through all that muck, but it was an eye-opening way to see how much unnecessary waste we produce through things like excessive packaging and food waste.
