This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and find out what makes this building so great. As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material that is very rare even today.First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House- Danish architect Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the building according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of building was way over budget (预算). Utzon didn't get to see it after it was built. Then, we visited Joan Sutherland Theater. The theater was refurbished (翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment. There was a rehearsal that day, so we could hear the beautiful sound ofthe orchestra. Finally, we arrived at the largest theater-Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there. Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon's story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as a masterpiece. From this tour, I learned that the opera house is not only a famous building, but a carrier of history and culture.19.Which is the correct order of the author's trip to the Sydney Opera House?A.Concert Hall -Drama Hall Joan Sutherland TheaterB.Drama Hall Concert Hall Joan Sutherland TheaterC.Joan Sutherland Theater Concert Hall Drama HallD.Drama Hall Joan Sutherland Theater Concert Hall20.According to the story, Jorn Utzon _____________.A.designed the Sydney Opera House with other people's helpB.had an argument with the government over the buildingC.won an international design competition in 1966D.visited the Sydney Opera House before he left the country21.What does the author think about the Sydney Opera House?A.It was a waste of money and not worth visiting.B.It is the best place to visit in Australia.C.It is a part of Australia's history and culture.D.It is famous because of its designer.22.The best title for the story would be _____________.A.Australia in my eyesB.A legendary architect Jorn UtzonC.A trip to Sydney Opera HouseD.A night at the operaCMy father was a cemetery (墓) keeper. I hadn't been there for a long time. When I got there, I found a woman in front of one of the graves I would lay a stone on. As Ibent to lay it, I heard her whisper "Thank you". It was then that I noticed the date of death on the grave was that same day. The grave was that of a young man,who died fifteen years ago.“He's my brother," she said. "But, where's your father? He was always the one to leave the stone."I told her that my father was ill bu t he asked me to do this. It seemed important to him. “Your father's kindness means more to me than anything else. When my brother died, I came often to see him. It is our custom to leave a stone. It tells the one who is here that he is thought of. But, then we moved away from here...so many painful memories...I was so afraid that he would be alone. But your father marked the grave every time he came. Each time I returned here, I saw that stone and it always comforted me. Your father is the kind of man who would ease the pain of a family member's heart though we are strangers. Was it their eye color or their height? It could be their sense of humor or their musical talent. Or maybe it was their fear of mathematics.A research at Ohio State University in the Us has found that genetics are partly responsible for children's math skills and about math.Scientists studied over 500 sets of twins to find out how genetics affect math anxiety. Over a period of 10 years, the twins completed math tests and filled out surveys about their levels of math anxiety. They found that fraternal twins (twins with different genetics) had different levels of skilland anxiety about math. Identical twins (twins with the same gene set) had similar levels. This shows that people's fear of math is partially affected by their genetic makeup. Math anxiety has a strong effect on a child's abilities. A study at the University of Chicago found math anxiety can cause the same feeling as being physically hurt. This anxiety means that some students are not willing to study math as much as they should. Therefore, they become even worse at math and less confident in their skill. This only adds to their fear. But if you're bad at math, don't try to blame it on your parents. Math anxiety is still rare-genetic factors explained about 40 percent of people's math anxiety. The environment, including school and family, is also part of the equation (影响因素).27.Which genetic trait is not mentioned in the passage?A eye color B.sense of directionsC. musical talentD.fear of mathematics28.The underlined word "anxiety"in Paragraph 2 refers to a/an _____________ feeling.A.unpleasantB. curiousC.relaxingD.crazy29.What did the researchers at Ohio State University find?A.Parents can pass their eye color on to their children.B.Children's math skills are determined by their parents.C.Math anxiety has something to do with e genetics.D.Fear of math is very common among twins.30.What do we know from the story?A.People are born with math anxiety.B.There is no way to deal with math anxiety.C.Parents should learn math well themselves.D.Genetics is not the only cause for math anxiety.三、任务型阅读(本有5小题,每小题1分,共计5分)A famous saying goes: Don't judge book by its cover. Years ago this might have sounded impossible to many. But since several years ago, with the end of China’s “one-child policy(政策)”, this could actually happen now. All Chinese couples are allowed to have two children. It means that many Chinese children may have siblings(兄弟姐妹) in the future. What would it be like growing up with a brother or a sister? Having a sibling can stop children from bad feelings, according to Laura Padilla-Walker, a teacher from Brigham Young University, US. “Siblings give children something that parents can’t,” she said. You may not feel lonely at home any more because there is someone to play with you. You can also share secrets with him or her.“But children with siblings also have to learn to control(控制) their feelings,” said Padilla-Walker. You need to share things with them, such as attention from parents, toys, the bathroom and the TV. There are also unpleasant situations such as competition, name-calling and even hair-pulling.Even the birth order of siblings could matter too. US psychologist Kevin Leman said that birth order decides the way parents treat their children, thus causing different personalities between siblings.Leman explained that parents are usually more strict with their first child. So firstborns may be perfect because parents set high goals(目标) for them. They usually act well and hope to succeed. When the couple has a second child, they have fewer rules. So late-born children are usually more creative. They also love attention. It is said that many of them also have a good sense of humor.23.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refers to(指) ______.A.one-child policy B.having a brother or a sisterC.the end of “one-child policy”D.being allowed to have two children 24.In Paragraph 2, the writer mainly tells us ______.A.the advantages of having a sibling B.how to look after a siblingC.how to get on well with a sibling D.the secrets of having a sibling 25.According to Kevin Leman, ______.A.late-born children are usually successful at schoolB.having a sibling can stop children from bad feelingsC.parents are usually more strict with their first-born childD.children with siblings have to learn to control their feelings26.Which of the following best shows the structure(结构) of the passage? Yet I did not know the real American society until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court (法院).After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very thankful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was surprised. He had good reason to charge (索价), he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible (负责任的) for my accident, so I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients (病人) and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided (避免), yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to refuse his help. And he made me pay him $770.Now I had to act as my own lawyer. I told the insurance (保险) company the date I was leaving America because of my inexperience (缺少经验).

III.

AAlex Palmer says he'll never forget his 13th birthday, not because of a gift or a party, but fire. “It made me realize how valuable life is,” said Alex, a seventh grader atMonroeDemonstrationSchoolinTulsa,Oklahoma. On April 18, Alex and many other kids from his school were riding home on a school bus when they suddenly saw smoke coming from the bus’ engine. “It was jaw-dropping,” he told reporters.By the time Alex and some other kids made it out the bus’ back door, the bus was already on fire. And some of their schoolmates were still inside. So he and some of the other older kids took action.“One little kid was slowing everyone down with his big backpack, ” eighth grader Destiny Fain said, “so I got it off and threw it to the side and helped to make sure all the little kids weren’t fighting or pushing. ”As that was going on, sixth grader Marketez Doyle-Smith reportedly helped another classmate who had trouble in breathing because of the smoke. “We saw our friend lying on the ground,” he said, “so we took our shirts off and waved them to get him some air to breathe.”Marketez also reportedly stopped a younger kid trying to get back on the bus to search for something he’d left behind. “We're all a family,” he told reporters. “So I went back to help the little kid.”Finally everyone made it off safely, thanks to Alex, Destiny, Marketez and several other kids. By later that day, they were already being called heroes. “I really don’t see it as being a hero,” Alex said, according to The World. “I see it as the right thing to do—helping others before you help yourself.”1. What happened on Alex’ s way home?A. The school bus was on fire suddenly.B. There was a party for Alex’s birthday.C. He received a gift from his classmate.D. Some classmates quarreled with each other.2. By saying "We're all a family.” Marketez probably meantA. We’re brothers in the same family.B. It’s our duty to help each other.C. We’re classmates in the same class.D. The thing left on the bus is mine.3. According to the last paragraph, Alex thought that heA. was not a brave student.B. had the right to do anything.C. had just done what he should do.D. hated to be called a hero by others.BThe secrets of dreaming are always interesting psychologists. It is generally acknowledged in the field that dreams people have during this time betweenchildhood and full adulthood, that’s around 30, are the strongest and most influential. Yet not enough is known about the repeated patterns of dreaming. Researchers are still trying to answer a basic question: How does dreaming relate to the life experiences and developmental challenges?G. William Domhoff and Adam Schneider, at theUniversityofCalifornia, help to answer this question by examining the lengthy dream series of two individuals, “Izzy” and “Jasmine”. Izzy provided a collection of 4, 329 dream reports from between the ages of 12 and 25, while Jasmine provided 664 dreams recorded between the ages of 14 and 25.Large collections of dreams like these pose challenges to researchers. Until recently, the means of studying dream series was to employ a team of recorders who take the time to code each dream for a predetermined(预先确定的)number of content categories, and then compare their results. Nowadays, digital technologies enable the analysis of language usage in dreams with high speed, accuracy, and objectivity. This marks a revolutionary advance in the science of dreaming. However, itcan only lead so far.To gain more specific and detailed insights, Domhoff and Schneider tailored word strings(词串)for each dreamer, mixing elements of traditional research with digital tools for analyzing large data sets. For Izzy these word strings included “family and s”, “celebrities” and “fantasy”, while the word strings they created for Jasmine included “familiar places,” electrical equipment” and “music”. The researchers used these word strings to identify connections between their dreams and real lives. Surprisingly, the results of the analysis revealed a great deal of consistency(一致性)and continuity in both sets of dreams. Izzy pays much attention to pop culture, and has affection for famous actors. Jasmine is an accomplished musician and performer.“The frequencies of dream elements show the intensity(强度)of the dreamer’s personal concern with that element in waking thought,” Domhoff and Schneider conclude. For anyone who still claims dreaming is merely random nonsense from the brain and mental world, these findings are hard to explain away.4. What do psychologists agree with about dreams?A. Dreams are influenced by life experiences.B. Dreaming is never nonsense from the brain.C. Dreams in one’s teens and twenties are strongest.D The patterns of dreaming are usually repeated.5. What does “it” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?A. The collection of dreams.B. Research into dreaming.C. The digital method.D. The challenge for psychologists.6. How do the researchers conduct their study?A. By analyzing large data sets.B. By developing individualized word strings.C. By identifying the patterns of dreaming.D. By making comparison with traditional research.7. Which can be the best title for the text?A. New tech, new findingB. Dreams: reflections of waking realityC. Lives, languages, dreamsD. Life experiences: elements of mental worldCLarry was on another of his underwater expeditions(探险)but this time, it was different. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.Larry first began diving when he was his daughter’s age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were either too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children of his age were not even allowed to dive. After the first expedition, Larry’s later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limitedto a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.Larry’s first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them .Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for rry didn’t even know what the time was, how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving spots afforded such a wide range of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age. He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition. Already, she looked like she was much braver than had been then. This was the key to a successful underwater expedition.8. In what way was this expedition different for Larry?A. His daughter had grown up.B. He had become a famous diver.C. His father would dive with him.D. His daughter would dive with him.9. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A. Larry had some special right.B. Larry liked the rented diving suits.C. Divers had to buy diving equipment.D. Ten-year-old children were permitted to dive.10. What can be learned from the underlined sentence?A. Larry didn’t wear a watch.B. Larry was not good at math.C. Larry had a poor memory.D. Larry enjoyed the adventure.11. What did Larry expect his daughter to do?A. Become a successful diver.B. Make a good diving guide.C. Take a lot of photo underwater.D. Have longer hours of training.DCompared to dogs, cats are often considered to be aloof(冷漠的)with respect to their human owners. It is usual for them to be indifferent(无动于衷的)when humans calltheir names. Are we sure that they don’t understand human voices at all?A recent study published in the journal of Scientific Reports suggests that we’ve been fooled. Japanese scientists found that cats can recognize their names if their owners regularly use them. In the study, scientistsrecruited 78 domestic cats. They played recordings of voices of their owners saying five words: the first four words were random nouns thatresembledtheir names while the final word was the cat’s name. Then they observed the cats’ responses, if there were any. Most of cats moved their ears or heads when they heard their names, while they made no response to other words. That suggested, “cats were paying attention to you, what you say and what you do,” John Bradshaw, an expert on human-animal interactions(互动)at the University of Bristol, UK, told The Times. “And cats were just as good as dogs at learning,” she added. In the study, when people called their names, cats often associated (联系) the words with rewards, such as food or play, or with “punishments” such as having a bath or going to the vet . This made cats sensitive (敏感的) to words. After the cats had been called several times, they could respond to the words. But the scientists added that while dogs have evolved(进化)to follow their owners’ orders, cats have not. Although cats appear to be distant, they do have special relationships with their owners.According to study co-author Atsuko Saito, cats have evolved not to show their emotions as a survival method. One example is illness, which they tend to hide because “in the wild, no one can rescue them” and predators (捕食性动物) are more likely to pay attention to them, Saito explained. However, technology may help bridge the communication gap between cats and us. There are now mobile apps available to explain what their meows mean. So, the next time you hear “meow, meow”,your cat may be telling you: “Hi, you haven’t cleaned my litter box recently.”12. What did the recent study find about cats?A. Cats can recognize their names.B. Cats are cleverer than dogs.C. Cats learn more slowly than dogs.D. Cats are willing to follow orders.13. What does the underlined word“resembled”in paragraph 2 probably mean?A. were limited toB. were different fromC. were similar toD. were away from14. Why do cats appear distant to their human owners?A. They associate words with punishments.B. They want to protect themselves from harm.C. They are not sensitive to the human voice.D. They don’t pay much attention to their surroundings.15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. It is difficult to understand cats’ meows.B. Interaction with your cats is very important.C. Cats do have good relationships with their owners.D. We may know cats better with the help of technology.
