1. Time:

On the first Sunday after a full moon on or after 21 March

2. Origin of Easter

The origin of Easter, a holiday associated with the observance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

is actually based on an ancient pagan(异教徒的) celebration.

① Resurrection Day for Christians: Jesus Christ had lain for three days following his

Crucifixion(苦难;刑罚) and he resurrented after three days. Therefore, people (especially the

Christians) set the Easter festival to commemorates the Resurrection(复活) of Jesus Christ from

the tomb

② Its Pagan Roots: The name Easter derives from the ancient Norse festival of Spring sun which

celebrated the awakening of new life and the death of winter. But this pagan(异教徒的) festival

was gradually replaced by the Christian Easter. As Christ’s return to life had occurred during the

season of Christ, it has been influenced by older traditions.

3. Way to celebrate

(1) Dyeing eggs: It is still very popular among American children. Now, people would like to buy

the beautiful eggs in the shops or make it by themselves for the good luck of their family or

themselves. Originally the egg symbolized fertility for the ancient Persians and Greeks who

exchanged eggs at their spring festival. But to the Christian time, the tomb from which Christ rose.

(2)Eating Eggs

Eggs are the most familiar symbol of Easter and should be evident throughout the feast. Begin the

feast with egg activities and egg appetizers. You can exchange eggs as gifts. Especially if there are

children involved you should have an Easter egg hunt in the garden or the house. You can crack

eggs (preferably hard boiled eggs!) and eat eggs. And be sure to retrieve your egg from its hiding

place. If eggs were not blessed at your parish(教区), or if you have more eggs at home, use this

blessing before you eat eggs.

(3)Lamb and Ham (羊肉和火腿)

① Lamb: The Christians lamb is the symbol of the sacrifice of Christ. Lamb was the main dish of

the ancient Jewish Passover Seder(逾越节) and has been the meat of choice for Easter dinner in

many Christian cultures. The presentation of the Easter lamb should be marked with special

festivity--a hymn, if possible, and certainly a special blessing.

② Ham: The Christians pig is the symbol of good luck (for the Jewess think eat the bloody meat

go against the rule, so the English make the ham to avoid the forbidden rule)
