2022四川省内江二中高考英语二轮阅读理解(4)答案阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A.B.C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
Educators are seriously concerned about the high rate of dropouts among the doctor of philosophy candidates and the consequent loss of talent to a nation in need of Ph. D. s. Some have placed the dropouts loss as high as 50 percent. The extent of the loss was, however, largely a matter of expert guessing. Last week a well-rounded study was published. It was published. It was based on 22,000 questionnaires sent to former graduate students who were enrolled in 24 universities and it seemed to show many past fears to be groundless. The dropouts rate was found to be 31 per cent, and in most cases the dropouts, while not completing the Ph. D. requirement, went on to productive work. They are not only doing well financially, but, according to the report, are not far below the income levels of those who went on to complete their doctorates.Discussing the study last week, Dr. Tucker said the project was initiated ‘because of the concern frequently expressed by graduate faculties and administrators that some of the individuals who dropped out of Ph. D. programs were capable of competing the requirement for the degree. Attrition at the Ph. D. level is also thought to be a waste of precious faculty time and a drain on university resources already being used to capacity. Some people expressed the opinion that the shortage of highly trained specialists and college teachers could be reduced by persuading the dropouts to return to graduate schools to complete t he Ph. D.’“The results of our research” Dr. Tucker concluded, “did not support these opinions.”Lack of motivation was the principal reason for dropping out. Most dropouts went as far in their doctoral program as was consistent with their levels of ability or their specialities. Most dropouts are now engaged in work consistent with their education and motivation.Nearly 75 per cent of the dropouts said there was no academic reason for their decision, but those who mentioned academic reason cited failure to pass the qualifying examination, uncompleted research and failure to pass language exams. Among the single most important personal reasons identified by dropouts for non-completion of their Ph. D. program, lack of finances was marked by 19 per cent.As an indication of how well the dropouts were doing, a chart showed 2% in humanities were receiving $ 20,000 and more annually while none of the Ph. D. ‘s with that background reached this figure. The Ph. D. ‘s shone in the $ 7,500 to $ 15,000 bracket with 78% at that level against 50% for the dropouts. This may also be an indication of the fact that top salaries in the academic fields, where Ph. D. ‘s tend to rise to the highest salaries, are still lagging behind other fields. As to the possibility of getting dropouts back on campus, the outlook was glum. The main condition which would have to prevail for at least 25 % of the dropouts who might consider returning to graduate school would be to guarantee that they would retain their present level of income and in some cases their present job.1.The author states that many educators feel that[A] steps should be taken to get the dropouts back to campus.the fropouts should return to a lower quality school to continue their study.[C] the Ph. D. holder is generally a better adjusted person than the dropout.[D] The high dropouts rate is largely attributable to the lack of stimulation on the part of faculty members.2.Research has shown that[A] Dropouts are substantially below Ph. D. ‘s in financial attainm ent.the incentive factor is a minor one in regard to pursuing Ph. D. studies.[C] The Ph. D. candidate is likely to change his field of specialization if he drops out.[D] about one-third of those who start Ph. D. work do not complete the work to earn the degree.3.Meeting foreign language requirements for the Ph. D.[A] is the most frequent reason for dropping out.is more difficult for the science candidate than for the humanities candidate.[C] is an essential part of many Ph. D. programs.[D] does not vary in difficulty among universities.4.After reading the article, one would refrain from concluding that[A] optimism reigns in regard to getting Ph. D. dropouts to return to their pursuit of the degree.a Ph. D. dropout, by and large, does not have what it takes to learn the degree.[C] colleges and universities employ a substantial number of Ph. D. dropouts.[D] Ph. D. ‘s are not earning what they deserve in nonacademic positions.5.It can be inferred that the high rate of dropouts lies in[A] salary for Ph. D. too low.academic requirement too high.[C] salary for dropouts too high.[D] 1000 positions.Vocabularydropout 辍学者,中途退学well-rounded 全面的attrition 缩/减员,磨损drain 枯竭bracket 一类人,(尤指按收入分类的)阶层lagging behind other fields 落后于其它领域glum 阴郁的难句译注Educators are seriously concerned about the high rate of dropouts among the doctor of philosophy candidates and the consequent loss of talent to a nation in need of Ph. 2022河南登封市高考英语阅读理解二轮练习选编(4)含答案阅读理解。
阅读下列短文, 从给的四个选项(A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。
To hitch-hike successfully in any country you must be able to do two things: attract attention and at the same time convince the driver at a glance that you do not intend to rob or murder him. To fulfill the first requirement you must have some mark to distinguish you at once from all other hikers. A serviceman, for instance, should wear his uniform, and a student his red scarf. In a foreign country an unmistakable indication of your own nationality will also arrest a driver’s attention. When I hitch-hiked 9, 500 miles across the United States and back recently I wore a well-tailored suit, a bowler hat and a trench coat, and carried a pencil-thin rolled black umbrella. My suitcase was decorated with British flags. Having plenty of luggage, moreover, I was not likely to be suspected of being a dangerous lunatic(精神病患者). I then had to get across to the driver the idea that I was a real traveler, and needed to get somewhere cheaply. But even with careful preparation, you must not assume that the task will be easy. You should be prepared to wait a little, for there are drivers who confess to a fierce prejudice against, (not to say hatred of)hitch-hikers, and would no more pick up a hiker than march from Aldermaston to London. In America, my average wait is half an hour, and my longest is two hours, but I have heard of people waiting all day: they probably took less pains to make themselves easy to notice.Nor must you assume that all the drivers who stop for you are nice, normal people. On one occasion I found myself driving with two boys of about nineteen who turned out to be on the run from the police, and were hoping to use me as an alibi. There are also lesser(较小的)risks: you may find yourself in the car of a Fascist fanatic, a Mormon missionary(传教士), or just a bad driver. You cannot tell, of course until you are in the car. But you soon learn the art of the quick excuse that gets you out again. If the hitch-hiker in the US remembers that he is seeking the willingness of drivers to give him a free ride, and is prepared to give in exchange entertainment and company, and not go to sleep, he will come across the remarkable, almost legendary, hospitality of American of the West. It will also help if he can drive—I think that I drove myself about 4, 500 of those 9, 500 miles I hitch-hiked in the States.【文章大意】文章主要介绍了作者如何搭乘便车的一些阅历, 如装束、等车、遇到的司机, 还特殊提及了在美国的一些有关搭乘便车的趣事。

A(2019山东潍坊三月一模,B)Hawking was perhaps the most famous scientist in the world when he died in 2018 at age 76.His 1988 book, A Brief History of Time, sold ten million copies and made him an unlikely superstar even to people who sweated over high school science.Humor was always a big part of Hawking's effort to bring physics to the masses. In his 2010 book, The Grand Design, for instance, he recounts how, in 1277, the Catholic Church declared scientific laws such as gravity to be wrong, since they seemed against God's idea.“Interestingly,”the text adds jokingly, “Pope John was killed by the effects of the law of gravity a few months later when the roof of his palace fell in on him.”Hawking was only 21 when he was diagnosed with the disease ALS. For most people, the condition would have been a disaster. But Hawking rolled over hardship as if it were just a pebble under his wheelchair.“Life would be tragic,”he once said, “if it weren't funny.”He kept smiling even though he spent more than 50 years in a wheelchair.“He loved adventure and fun,”says Mlodinow, who once took Hawking on a punt-boat trip down the River Cam in Cambridge, England, despite the obvious danger of the boat turning over.“You know about when he went on the Vomit Comet? It's a plane that flies in a parabolic(抛物线的)path so you are weightless, like you are in space. A lot of people vomit, but he loved that sort of thing.”And he was 65 at the time.Hawking's greatest hit, humor-wise, was probably the cocktail party he threw in 2009. It was a “welcome reception for future time travelers,”he said, so naturally, he sent out the invitations the day after the party. No one showed up yet. “Maybe one daysomeone living in the future will find the information and use a wormhole time machine to come back to my party, proving that time travel will one day be possible,” Hawking explained. And if that happens, don't be surprised if Hawking is there too. After all, he never missed a chance to have fun.1.What can we learn about Pope John?A.He was not in favor of God.B.He was a scientist like Hawking.C.He was opposed to the law of gravity.D.He was killed due to the discovery of gravity.2.What drove Hawking to go on the Vomit Comet?A.His fondness of adventure.B.The invitation from his friend.C.The requirements of his work.D.His desire for recovery from ALS.3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The cocktail party was a great success.B.The possibility of time travel was not proved.C.Hawking was a man who enjoyed holding parties.D.The wormhole time machine was used at that time.答案 [语篇解读] 本文为人物介绍类记叙文。
