UK experts said it was more evidence that lifestyle influenced cancer risk.A recent poll for the charity Ramblers a quarter of adults walk for no more than an hour a week, but being active is known to reduce the risk of a number of cancers. This study, published in Cancer Epidemiology,Biomarkers&Prevention, followed 73.615 women out of 97,785 aged 50-74 who had been recruited by the American Cancer Society between 1992 and 1993,so it could monitor the incidence of cancer in the group. They were asked to complete questionnaires on their health and on how much time they were active and participating in activities such as walking, swimming and aerobics(有氧运动)and how much time they spent sitting watching television or reading. They completed the same questionnaires at two-year intervals between 1997 and 2009.Of the women,47% said walking was their only recreational acivity. Those who walked for at least seven hours per week had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer compared to those who walked three or fewer hours perweek.Dr.Alpa Patel,a senior epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta,Georgia, who led the study, said:”Given that more than 60% of women report some daily walking, promoting walking as a healthy leisure-time activity could be an effective strategy for increasing physical activity amongst post-menopausal women. We were pleased to find that without any other recreational activity, just walking one hour a day was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer in these women.””More strenuous(紧张的)and longer activities lowered the risk even more.Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive of Breast Cancer Campaign, said:”This study adds further evidence that our lifestyle choices can play a part in influencing the risk of breast cancer and even small changes incorporate into our normal day-to-day activity can make a difference.”She added:”We know that the best weapon to overcoming breast cancer is the ability to stop it occurring in the first place. The challenge now is how we turn these findings into action and identify other sustainable lifestyle changes that will help us prevent breast cancer.”31. Cosmetic SurgerySurgery that can improve the way a person looks is becoming more and more popular in the United States. This kind of surgery is called cosmetic surgery, and both men and women are turning to this treatment as a way of keeping their appearance young as well as keeping competitive (有竞争力的)in their jobs. Men especially are beginning to turn to face-lifts(面部拉皮手术),liposuction(taking fat out of the body),and implants (putting artificial parts into their bodies ) to help them look younger. As companies downsize(缩编) and move younger employees into higher positions, older employees in their late forties and early fifties feel the need to look and act younger in order to stay competitive. These operations are not without dangers, however. One young woman had an eye operation to get rid of the bags under her eyes. She described her experience as terrible. Even thou gh he’d given me an injection near my eyes, I saw everything.”Shewent on to explain,“I knew I had to keep still because of what he was doing. He was scraping(刮) away fat underneath my eyes. It took about ten minutes. After he finished, I felt I couldn’t w alk .I was so faint.”Her troubles did not end after the operation for two weeks. Her eyes were swollen(肿胀的)and almost completely closed, and even dark glasses could not hide the side effects of the operation.Liposuction, taking fat out of the body, is probably the most popular cosmetic operation in the United States. It seems simple enough. First, a small cut is made over the place where the patient wants the fat removed. Next,a small pipe is put into the cut.A machine like a vacuum cleaner is then used to suck the fat out of the body. However, as one doctor explained, some problems call happen after the operation. He warned, 'Irregular lumps and loose skin can reset from this operation. If it is not evenly done.1iposuction Can produce a very lumpy result.”16 Cosmetic surgery is more popular in the US thananywhere else.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 The way a man looks has little to do with the job opportunities he may have.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 There are hardly any risks involved in cosmetic operations.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 The young woman was by no means satisfied with the eye operation.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 The eye operation was such a failure that the woman refused to pay for it.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Sometimes liposuction patients may have to undergo more than one operation.
Stanford University1 Stanford University is sometimes called "the Harvard of the West." The closeness of Stanford to San Francisco, a city thirty-two miles to the north, gives the university a decidedly cosmopolitan (世界性的)flavor.2 The students are enrolled mainly from the western United States. But most of the fifty states send students to Stanford, and many foreign students study here, as well. And standards for admission remain high. Young men and women are selected to enter the university from the upper fifteen percent of their high school classes.3 Not only because of the high caliber (素质)of its students but also because of the desirable location and climate, Stanford has attracted to its faculty some of the world's most respected scholars. The university staff has included many Nobel Prize winners in various fields. Stanford's undergraduateschool of engineering and its graduate schools of business, law, and medicine are especiallywell-regarded.4 What is student life like on "The Farm"? Culturally, the campus is a magnet for both students and citizens of nearby communities. Plays, concerts, and operas are performed in the university's several auditoriums and in its outdoor theater, where graduations are also held. Several film series are presented during the school year. Guest lecturers from public and academic life frequently appear on campus. For the sports-minded, the Stanford campus offers highly developed athletic facilities. Team sports, swimming, and track and field activity are all very much part of the Stanford picture. So are bicycling and jogging.5 In addition to financial support from alumni (校友), Stanford receives grants from the government and from private charities. In recent years, government grants have made possible advanced studies in the fields of history, psychology, education, and atomic energy. At present Stanford is carrying out an ambitious building program, financed in part by the Ford Foundation's 25 million grant. Recently added to the campus are a new physics building, new school of business, new graduate school of law, new student union and undergraduate library.23 Paragraph 2 _________.24 Paragraph 3_________.25 Paragraph 4_________.26 Paragraph 5_________.A Colorful Life on CampusB Intelligent Student BodyC School AdministrationD Distinguished FacultyE Substantial Financial SupportF The Harvard of the West27 Stanford University attracts students from __________.28 The faculty of the university boasts some of the world’s __________.29 The university offers a rich variety of __________.30 The development of the university relies to acertain extent on __________.A both indoors and outdoorsB both home and abroadC most distinguished scholarsD desirable climateE cultural activitiesF external financial support第四部分:阅读理解(第31~45题,每题3, 分,共45分)下面有3篇短文,每篇短文后有5道题,每道题后面有4个选项。
