It was late in the evening last Saturday when ten-year-old Danny was being driven

home from hockey(曲棍球) practice by his dad. His mother was in the car, too.

Before they reached their house, Danny noticed a figure(身影) in front of an open

garage. “Look, Mom. There is a dog outside the garage. It’s so cold tonight. A dog

couldn’t have been left outside. Something must have happened. We should get out

and have a look,” said the little boy to his mother. Considering it was very cold

outside, his mother said, “Nothing has happened. It might not be a dog. It might

just be a dog statue(雕像) thrown away by someone.”

The father didn’t halt the car and they got home directly. However, Danny was

still worried. He was sure that something bad had happened so he asked his mother

to go back there and have another look. His mother gave in at last.

When she got there, she realized that it was not a dog her son had thought. It

was Kathleen St. Onge, their old neighbor. The 80-year-old woman had stepped on some ice outside her garage and fallen on the ground. She had been lying there for two

hours, unable to get up. Danny’s mother rushed home to ask her husband to call 911.

They then returned with some blankets to cover Ms St. Onge and waited for the ambulance.

Though still in hospital, the elderly woman is recovering well and cannot thank

Danny more. Without him, she might have died on such a cold weather.
