I teach sixty students economics at a university three times a week. Last Monday, a young

man 11 me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of

something I'd read somewhere before. Every morning when you 12 , you have a choice

about how to live your life that day. I choose to be 13 . Besides teaching at a university, I

also teach at a community college in Henderson, which is 17 miles down the freeway from where

I live.

One day a few weeks ago, I was driving to Henderson. I only had to drive a quarter mile

2 down the road to the college. But just then the car died. I tried to start it again but failed. 14

I turned off the car, grabbed my books, and walked down the road to the college. As soon as I got

to the college, I called for a tow truck(拖车) to meet me at my car after class. The secretary of the

college asked me what had happened. “This is my lucky day.” I replied with 15 “Your car

16 and why today is your lucky day?” She was 17 . “I live 17 miles away from here.” I

replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn't. Instead, it broke

down in the 18 place, off the freeway, within walking too far to get here. So, I'm 19

able to teach my class, and I can call for the tow truck. If my car was meant to(注定) break down

today, it was the most convenient way to break down not far away.” The secretary's eyes opened

widely, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for the class. So, my secret is: If something

bad happens and you can't change it, just change your 20 and think about it in another way.

Be a cheerful one.

always had its 31 , but I was always looking for something every minute. Over time, Kate

your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Then, I saw my shoes flying at 34 . I jumped to my

feet and started yelling, but she yelled 35 louder.
