How to help the students overcome their anxiety and
depression in class
SPEECH
Good afternoon, everyone. First of all, I really appreciate to have such a good opportunity to stand here to share my ideas with all of you. And I hope I will make progress in teaching after communicating with you. Thank you.
Today, my topic is how to help the students overcome anxiety and depression in my English class.
As we know, although anxiety does not necessarily impact the students’ academic abilities, it can affect the ir ability to learn. as teachers, we can work to help our students succeed in the classroom and go for some effective ways to help them overcome it. And I will present my opinions in three steps, before the class, during the class, and after the class, which have been put into use in my class.
Before class, it means the first 5 to 10 minutes during the whole class.
I will try to create a safe place for the students to go when anxiety symptoms are high or during stressful times. For example, if I find that my students are under the pressure of exam or some students are suffering from something bad, I will organize some calming activities, such as playing some soft music for them to feel relax, telling them
something interesting happening to me recently and ask ing them to begin class with a funny conversation to distract their attention on anxiety.
During class, it means the main body of the whole class, it may be 30 minutes or so.
In this period, if I am aware of physical symptoms of anxiety on some of my students, I will distract them and encourage them in the following ways.
Example one, I will use some small group activities. Students with anxiety may be better able to cope with small groups of a few students rather than large classroom study. Have the class break into small groups to complete class work to encourage participation.
Example two, I will create group activities that role-play appropriate behaviors. I will teach my students what to do in specific situations. This can help all students learn how to handle situations such as anger management, stress reduction, test anxiety. Providing instruction to the entire class will decrease the focus on the students with anxiety.
Example three, I will try my best to decrease situations that induce stress. Teachers can restructure assignments to decrease the amount of stress for a student. For example, instead of having a child stand in front of the class to read a report, find creative ways to complete
reports. Allow students to make posters or record presentations at home on a tape recorder.
After class, it means the last 3or 5minutes in the whole class.
In order to make sure that they will do better next time in overcoming it. I will reward effort by a student with anxiety. When a child shows effort or is able to control their anxiety symptoms through interventions, I will let them know I have noticed and are proud of their efforts.
