贝尔曼只是个窝在废旧公寓内的一个穷画画的。
他甚至都不能被称为是一个“画家”，因为他的艺术生涯是极其失败的。
但是他拥有一颗善良的心，在生命的最后时刻，他没有躺在那里等待死亡，而是用了整个灵魂，成就了那幅不朽的杰作——最后一片叶子。
尽管“锯齿边缘已经枯败发黄”，但看起来还是非常逼真的，这似乎和上天的安排有着巨大的关系，他之所以能画出如此逼真的作品，是因为“只剩下光秃秃的枝干还紧贴在破败的墙上”，这给他在墙上作画创造了很好的'条件。
从艺术上讲也许那墙上的绿叶同他一生中创作的其它画作一样失败，但是它点亮了另一个灵魂。
如果说贝尔曼是那堵松动残缺的砖墙，那么乔安西就像那依附在上面的藤枝；如果说贝尔曼是那株极老极老的常春藤，那么乔安西就是那藤上的一片叶子。
