AEvery year at the start of a new school year, college freshman are occupied in dealing with the enrollment procedures and settling themselves in their new dormitories. Their parents, the super—protective Chinese ones, will always follow their children everywhere , anxious and worried. However, the new policy of Tsinghua University this semester is sending a message: boys and girls, it‘s time to become independent. On move—in day, a tallow line was drawn across the entrance of school area, separating parents from their children. The students themselves had to spend about three hours registering and finding their dormitories.By doing this, the university is asking students to“start this new adventure by standing on their own feet”,said Chen Jinjing, president of Tsinghua。
Following Tsinghua, other university have also made policies to encourage students to enroll alone.Oujiang College ,at Wenzhou University in Zhejiang ,has opened an online platform for freshmen to contact senior schoolmates who can guide them on enrollment day .Renmin University asked senior students to return to their hometowns and accompany freshmen to school. This change has excited many freshmen. Li Ming, a Tsinghuafreshman from Gansu province, took a train to Beijing with only one schoolmate .“It‘s my first long trip without my parents, and I am quite excited about it,”he said. ―Coming to the university begins a new stage of my life, and I should learn to take care of myself from the start. ‖Although some say such policies are not enough to make students independent, many believe it can help start to change the situation. ―Such campaigns help students realize they have to live on their own ,‖said Xiong Bingqi, vice-president of the 21st Century Education Research Institute.―The lack of independence has been a major concern for kids born in the 1990s, as parents arranged everything, which hampered (阻碍) children‘s all-around development.‖Xiong added.21.From the passage we can infer that____________.A.all universities don‘t require their freshmen to enroll themselvesB.all freshmen of Tsinghua are excited by the policyC.Li Ming, delighted by the policy , went to Tsinghua aloneD.senior students from Oujiang College should accompany freshmen to school22.If you are a freshmen of Renmin University, ____________.A.settle in your dormitory with the help of your parentsB.travel to the university all by yourselfC.a senior student may return to your hometown and accompany youback schoolD.finish registering alone23.The underlined word ―this‖in Paragraph 4 probably refers to ___________.A.encouraging freshmen to study hard and set a new goal.B.requiring freshmen to enroll and settle themselves in dormitories aloneC.drawing a yellow line to protect the freshmenD.separating freshmen from their friends and classmates24.According to Xiong Bingqi,_____________.A.the policy can help parents realize their mistake that they make their children independentB.parents are so concerned about kids born in the 1990s that they won‘t let children go anywhereC.children‘s lack of independence lead to their being lacking in all-around developmentD.Chinese parents do everything for their children, thus holding back their children‘s all-around developmentBIn the process that parents help kids to develop language and speech skills, listening to what they have to say is just as vital as talking to them, the researchers say.The influence of a conversation between a child and an adult is about five times as great as that of adult speech input alone, according to the researchers‘findings. ―Adults speaking to children helps language develop ,but what matters much more is the ineraction.‖said the study‘s lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the Universaty of California,Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didn‘t have much of an effect—ositively or negatively—as long as it wasn‘t replacing conversations between an adult and a child. The study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes and education. The researchers found that , in an average day , children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and participated in about 400 adult-child conversations a day.Assessed separately, factors positively associated with language development included each additional 100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When locked at home alone,TV was negatively associated with language development. But ,when the three factors were analyzed together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children.―The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult , the better ideaa parent has about where the child is.‖ Zimmerman said, ―Although it‘s mostly done unconsciously, parents will provide feedback and correct mistakes. They‘ll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what they‘re doing ,for example, ‗I‘m putting on your pajamas now ‘. But give your child the opportunity to talk , hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment .‖ she added. ―If parents can carve out some conversation time –maybe at bath time or at dinner –that‘s a wonderful thing. ‖25.What ‗s the best title of the passage?A.Make Friend with Your KidsB.talk with Kids, Not at ThemC.Teach Children How to speakD.Tell Kids to Talk with Others26.The researchers also found that TV viewing____________.A.affected a child‘s language development greatly both negatively and positivelyB.could have a positive effect on a child‘s language developmentC.affected a child‘s language development more negatively than positivelyD. had a bit of impact on a child‘s language development27.We can draw a conclusion from the last paragragh that___________.A.parents-child conversation can be carried out at any proper timeB.parents should let a child repeat what he or she saysC.parents should leave a child talking aloneD.bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a child28.Frederick Zimmerman would probably agree that____________.A.it‘s not proper for parents to correct their children‘s mistakes when they are speakingB.Parents should let their children talk most of the timeC.children should watch TV programs selectivelyD.the conversation between parents and children should be two-wayCA.The Accommodation Office (Room 114)The Accommodation Office is the place to find everything concerning accommodation during your studying at this university .It offers a free advisory service and a wide range of handbooks and checklists covering the full range of housing available. This data flood is already starting to transform business, government, science and everyday life. It has great potential for good-as long as consumers, companies and governments make the right choices about when to restrict the flow of data, and when to encourage it.A few industries have led the way in their ability to gather and take advantage of the data. Credit-card companies monitor every purchase and can identify cheats with a high degree of accuracy. Stolen credit cards are more likely to be used to buy hard liquor than wine, for example, because it is easier to overlook. Insurance firms are also good at combining clues to spot doubtful claims: dishonest claims are more likely to be made on a Monday then a Tuesday, since policyholders(保险客户) who arrange accidents tend to assemble friends as false witnesses over the weekend. By combining many such clues, it is possible to work out which cards are likeliest to have been stolen, and which claims are untrue. By analyzing ―basket data‖, supermarkets can make promotions to appeal to particular customers‘preferences. The oil industry uses supercomputers to help them before drilling wells. But the data flood also poses risks. There are many examples of datas being stolen: disks full of social-security data go missing , laptops loadedwith tax records are left in taxis, credit-card numbers are stolen by online purchase. The result can be privacy made public, identity stolen and cheats permitted large space. Rather than owning and controlling their own person data, they very often find that they have lost control of it. The best way to deal with the data flood is to make more data available in the right way, by requiring greater transparency in several areas. First, users should be given greater access to and control over the information held about them, including whom it is shared with. Google allows users to see what information it holds about them, and lets them delete their search histories or modify the targeting of advertising, for example .Second, organizations should be required to disclose details of security breaches(泄密),as is already the case in some parts of the world ,to encourage bosses to take information security more seriously. Third, organizations should be subject to an annuai security check, with the resulting grade made public (though details of any problems exposed would not be). This would encourage companies to keep their security measures up to date.32.From the passage we can infer that______________.A.credit cards are not so secure to use and will go out of use very soonB.insurance firms have to investigate before they confirm their policyholders‘ claimsC.lots of data are lost because of hardware problemsD.online purchases are becoming more and more popular33.Which of the following is the writer‘s opinion about how to deal with the data flood?panies should update their measures to guarantee their data safety .anizations should keep their resulting grade of security checks unknown to the public.C.Personal information should be used for public information.D.The users should be given the right to access public information.34.From the passage we can couclude that______________.A.the information flood is more useful to organizations than to individualsB.the data flood makes people‘s life less convenient and more expensivepaines and insurance firms are responsible for the data floodD.the information flood has both positive and negative influence on modern life35.What‘s the main idea of the passage ?A.Data flood is available in every field.B.The harms that data flood has brought to people are on the increase.rmation flood is affecting people‘s life.D.Data flood has brought people some benefits.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

The mountain came to represent the opposite of everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain climbing goal became the focus of a commercial guiding industry. Over the years, the crowds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tons of trash. Whenever I was asked whether I’d climb Mt. Qomolangma, my answer was always the same: not interested. That was probably where my personal Mt. Qomolangma story would have ended, were it not for an old friend Thom Pollard and his obsession (迷恋) with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999, he began to explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared while he was attempting to be the first to climb Mt. Qomolangma. But Mallory’s partner, Sandy Irvine, and the camera he had likely carried, were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering whether they might have reached the top in 1924.Pollard’s story moved me. I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy. I was wrong. On the highest point on the planet, I was more tired than I’d ever been in any climbing. Along the way, I continuously tipped my hat, not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up this route. My search was in vain, but I began to reconsider Mt. Qomolangma.I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self-centered tourists. We shared route information, weather forecasts, and family photos—all united around a common goal.I went to Mt. Qomolangma to seek Irvine. But in the end, I found something more difficult to get: the spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been: inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers’ footsteps up Mt. Qomolangma.4.Why did the author once hate climbing Mt. Qomolangma?A.Because the mountain was overcrowded.B.Because his original climbing goal changed.C.Because climbing it became a profit-driven industry.D.Because he had to brave the elements on the mountain.5.What motivated the author to climb Mt. Qomolangma later?A.The influence of Thom Pollard.B.The results of the previous climbing.C.The development of advanced equipment.D.The spirit of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine.6.What does the underlined phrase “tipped my hat” in paragraph 3 mean?A.Relieved my tiredness.B.Showed my respect.C.Expressed my gratitude.D.Proved my determination.7.What message does the passage mainly convey?A.The search for missing adventurers holds great value.B.Modern climbing lacks respect for the natural environment.C.Spirits of the climbers of Mt. Qomolangma are worth respect.D.Experienced climbers are qualified to conquer Mt. Qomolangma.A strange sound called “biotwang” was first heard bouncing around the Mariana Trench 10 years ago, and scientists have finally figured out where it comes from.Recorded by microphones deep in the ocean, the unexplained sound — a low, loud moan (哼声) followed by a mechanical echo, like a frog burping (打嗝) in space — thundered through a computer speaker about a decade ago. Confused researchers called it the “biotwang”.“You’ve got this low-frequency portion, like a moan,” says Lauren Harrell, a data scientist at Google Research’s AI for Social Good, adding her own impression of a hearty sigh. “Then youhave the higher-frequency component that sounds, to me, like an outer planet spacecraft — the ‘bip boo, bip boo’ sound.”Confirming which marine animal makes a strange noise isn’t easy, though: it requires a person on a boat to see and identify the source at exactly the same time the sound is heard. “It takes a lot of time, a lot of effort and a fair amount of luck,” Allen says.An international team headed by Allen, marine biologist from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and Harrell conducted a collaborative research in 2020. While surveying whales off the Mariana Islands, Allen and other researchers saw a mysterious species called the Bryde’s whale 10 times. These whales are spread out far across the huge open ocean, so it’s hard for scientists to observe or study them. On nine of the occasions that Bryde’s whales turned up, the researchers also heard the biotwang. “Once, it’s a coincidence,” Allen says. “Twice is happenstance. Nine times, it’s definitely a Bryde’s whale.”After identifying the source, they reviewed years of audio data from underwater hydrophones to find out where this specific whale sound had previously been heard. “Once scientists know where and when these whales travel,” Harrell says, “AI models could connect that data to climate and environmental factors and thus support protection efforts.”The technology isn’t perfect, though. “These algorithms (算法) can only search for a frequency they know,” says Harrell. “The Bryde’s whale vocalizations change over time and between populations. But because the tools are open-source, other scientists can use them to discover more about whale language. We seem to be so disconnected from, or simply have no access to this amazing underwater world of sound,” he says. “I think it’s about time that we change that.”8.Why is it difficult to identify the source of biotwang?A.Because years of audio data need to be analyzed.B.Because enough time and a right moment are a must.C.Because researchers lack a knowledge of marine animals.D.Because biotwang alternates with low and high frequency9.What is paragraph 5 mainly about?A.Who solved the biotwang mystery.B.When the Bryde’s whale usually appeared.C.How the source of biotwang was determined.D.Why the Bryde’s whale was difficult to observe.10.What is Harrell’s attitude toward their team’s discovery?A.Ambiguous.B.Objective.C.Unconcerned.D.Disapproving. 11.What can be the suitable title for the passage?A.Mystery of Biotwang Finally SolvedB.AI Algorithms Applied in Biotwang ResearchC.Singer of the Deep Ocean — Bryde’s WhaleD.Protection of the Deep Ocean — A Long Way to Go“It won’t forgive your mistakes,” wrote Valentin Lebedev, an astronaut, in his diary. “Even eating becomes more complicated. You must be careful and rely on sealed containers and specialized utensils to open packages. Spills can be dangerous as food particles or liquids might float into equipment or get into your eyes or nose.” Enough to say the anxiety of an altogether different order in zero gravity. What’s worse, in space, no one can hear you scream about travel delays. When will I get back? Such is the dilemma of Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, two astronauts who have been stranded (被滞留的) on the International Space Station (ISS) since docking there on June 6, 2024. NASA does not like that word. As one official insisted, “I want to make it very clear that Butch and Suni are not stranded in space.”Mr Wilmore and Ms Williams arrived at the ISS aboard the first crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner. What was meant to be an eight-day stay is approaching the three-month mark after their capsule leaked helium (氦) and five of its 28 engines malfunctioned. That has delayed their return, possibly until February 1, 2025. Precisely what happens now depends on whether NASA thinks Starliner is safe — tests are ongoing — or whether they are better off getting a ride home on a flight operated by Boeing’s competitor, SpaceX. A decision should come soon. The next SpaceX Dragon capsule is due to dock at the ISS in September and return to Earth next year. If it is to make room for Mr Wilmore and Ms Williams, it will go up with two crew members instead of its usual four. That would require Starliner to leave the ISS uncrewed. Boeing says this is not currently possible owing to software issues. As it is, the engineering fault is a shame for Boeing and NASA.If crewed Starliner flights are unworkable, that will put paid to NASA’s ambition for competition in the task of ferrying astronauts to the space station and back to Earth. Now SpaceX looks like the only American game in town capable of getting to and from the ISS.Having a mission prolonged unexpectedly, which sometimes happens, means missing out on changes big and small. Sergei Krikalev spent five extra months on the Mir space station when earthlings got distracted by the breaking up of the Soviet Union. He came back to a whole new world in 1992.12.Which of the following best describes Valentin’s feeling in the diary?A.Amused but fragile.B.Uncomfortable and tense.C.Disturbed but magical.D.Restless and tolerant.13.When did Starliner plan to return at first?A.June 6, 2024.B.June 14, 2024.C.September 6, 2024.D.February 1, 2025.14.What do we know about NASA according to the text?A.It should have made massive investment for Starliner.B.It prefers cooperation with Space X instead of Boeing.C.It is giving a test to fix gas leak and an engineering fault.D.It denied the delayed flight in protection of its reputation.15.What does the last paragraph imply?A.A stranded flight caused Soviet Union to break up.B.What’s in store for Butch and Suni remains to be seen.C.Astronauts will see a whole new world when they return.D.Soviet Union’s spacecraft technology was no better than NASA’s.Always the Outsider? One of the things I used to fear was being the new girl in the office — in the kitchen making coffee while the in-crowd chatted about the weekend. I worried that I wasn’t good enough or smart enough. 16 I’d struggle for words while trying to look cool. Back at school, I was best friends with Kate and Cathy until we had to walk across the road in twos, and guess whowas left out? I’ve always been the outsider from school days to office life. Or is that the story I have told myself? As in so many areas of life, the only thing you can control is your response. I remind myself of what Eleanor Roosevelt said: No one can make you feel lower without your agreement. 17 These are the lessons I have learned along the way :·Starting anywhere new, you just have to find your people, the ones that get you. 18 It’s OK to take your time and figure out if you’re the right fit for each other. Have faith that you will find the right people for you.·Very often it’s our belief systems that tell us we don’t fit in. We are replaying the stories from childhood and need to rewrite the script (剧本). 19 For example, when are you assuming that you’ll be on your own? What fears are you projecting onto yourself?·Practice self-acceptance. Remind yourself that it’s OK to have a different way of operating in the world.· 20 Never forget that while you might be trying to fit in, you should never try to be anybody but yourself.A.Don’t over-think people or situation.B.Don’t charge into friendships, though.C.Start noticing your patterns of mentality.D.If I was asked a question, panic would set in.E.The only person making you feel like an outsider is you.F.The feeling of being an outsider would force me to shut up.G.We all feel a little lost and awkward sometimes — you’re not alone.二、完形填空I’ve been barefoot in London every day since March last year. AErnest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on July 21st, 1899. Influenced by his father, he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting at his early age. In 1917, after graduation from high school, Hemingway began his writing career with The Kansas City Star. And then, after being rejected for army service in World War I because of poor vision, he volunteered to serve as a driver for an American ambulance unit in France. In 1918, he transferred to duty on the Italianfront, where he was seriously wounded in an explosion. After his recovery, he returned home. He worked for The Toronto star, covered the Greco-Turkish war as a foreign reporter, and then returned to Paris, which was a city full of intellectual life, creativity, and genius after the war. In Paris, where he accomplished a revolution in literary style and language, his first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems, appeared in 1923, and was followed by a short story collection In Our Time, which marked his entry to American literature in 1925.Hemingway‘s status as a remarkable writer of his time was confirmed with the publication of A Farewell to Arms in 1929. The novel represented a farewell both for war and for love. In 1937, he became a foreign reporter covering the Spanish Civil war. Three years later, he published For Whom the Bell Tolls. Set in Spain during the Civil war, the novel restated his view of love found and lost and described the tough spirit of the common people. In 1912, the same judgment was reflected in his portrait of fisherman, Santiago, with an indomitable spirit in defeat, in The Old Man and the Sea, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. With one of the most important influences on the development of the American short story and novel, Hemingway has seized the imagination of the American public like no other twentieth-century author. He died by suicide, in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1961.21. If you‘re unlucky enough to be stuck with classmates who don‘t really ―get‖ you, you‘ve just got to try to make the best of it.But that doesn‘t mean you need to ―fit in‖, or at least in the way that people think. If you try to transform yourself into a clone of everyone else, it won‘t help you make friends. It‘ll just make you feel like a fake. You also shouldn‘t shut down or refuse to be friends with everyone who doesn‘t like you. If you do that, you‘ll just make yourself miserable. Instead, you‘ve got to work on being comfortable and confident with whom you are while ignoring all the haters. Keep on speaking up, asking questions and getting to know people better. If you send out positive energy, then people willgenerally send some back to you. A couple of them will stay the same, and you‘re allowed to forget about them.If you feel like you‘re doing all that but still not getting anywhere, then don‘t give up. Just expand your circle. Get a part-time job at a cool-looking place, join an after-school art class or youth group—do whatever it takes to find a couple of like-minded people to connect with. Even if you don‘t find anyone right away, you‘ll still be getting some more social expe riences under your belt, and that‘s always a good thing.A fun book called Uncool, by Erin Elisabeth Conley, has some tips for folks like you who want to stay positive at school while being true to your personality:·Throw caution to the wind.·Don‘t toler ate others‘ mistakes.·Have patience with people who are different from you.·Don‘t change just because someone else thinks you should.·Know that even though you may be a misfit, there‘s always some place where you will be welcomed in the world.25. The Guardian (卫报) described the scene of a friend‘s face buried in a screen as ―a distinct 21st-century problem‖. A new word has been created to describe this --- phubbing. It is the act of looking at your mobile phone instead of paying attention to others during a social interaction. Like pointing at one‘s nose, phubbing is widely considered rude behavior. People everywhere are beginning to lose patience with the phenomenon.A ―Stop Phubbing‖ camp aign group has been started in Australia and at least five others have sprung up in its wake as anger about the lack of manners grows. The campaign‘s creator, Alex Haigh, 23, from Melbourne, said, ―A group of friends and I were chatting when someone raised how annoying being ignored by people on mobiles was.‖ He has created a website where companies can download posters to discourage phubbing.Phubbing is just one symptom of our increasing dependence on mobile phones and the Internet, which is replacing normal social interaction. A survey found that one out of three Britons would answer the phone in a restaurant and 19% said they would while being served in a shop. The survey came after a supermarket assistant in south London refused to serve a woman until she stopped using her phone. A poll, for a Sunday paper, also found that 54 per cent of people checked Facebook, Twitter or other social media every day, with 16 per cent checking more than ten times a day. An unsurprising 63 per cent of people carry their phone with them ―almost all, or all of the time‖, it found.Phil Reed, a professor of psychology at Swansea University who has studied the Internet addiction disorder, said many phubbers show symptoms of addiction to their mobile phones.Time magaz ine once pointed out, ―Phubbing has a much greater potential harm to real-life connections by making people around us feel like we care more about posts than their presence.‖In the UK, Glamour magazine even imagined how novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) would have written about people with bad mobile phone manners: ―It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man or woman in possession of a good mobile phone must be in want of manners.‖32.
