On Vocabulary

【Abstract】English is the basic requirement to college
students,however, most students around me are facing with
difficulties in vocabulary learning. Thus we have to know more
about the vocabulary, not only from the letters that composed of
it,but also its constructional elements. This paper focuses on the
common elements that construct the vocabulary.

1. Introduction
Vocabulary is one of the three key factors on language
learning. It is the basic to make sentences and express thoughts
and meanings, and a key requirement of language communication,
so a big amount of stable vocabulary of my own is significant
and essential. Famous Learner Wilkin (1972) said that without
grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing

Borrowing
Borrowing is a way of adding new vocabulary items to a language. Speakers of a language
often have contact with speakers of other language. If a speaker of one of these
languages does not have a readily available word for something in the world and a
speaker of the other language does, the first speaker often borrows the word from
the second speaker. The first settlers in North America had contact with the Indians
who had already developed names for places and things peculiar to the North American
continent. Consequently, the settlers borrowed such words as Massachusetts,
Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Chicago, and Mississippi, to mention a few place-names
only. Another large group of words came into English as a result of contact through
invasion, in this case the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Various kinds of words
