Using these cigarettes requires small power from b attery and these cigarettes are also available in various flavor s and varied nicotine levels. Owing to the fact that the charge from a short cable is required, carrying the electronic cigarette s can’t be that easy in some case. This means that the smoki ng habits of individuals are in fact controlled! Also, the human body is protected from harmful smoke that is not given off by t he electrical version of these new age cigarettes. The cigarettes are in a fine pack and they are durable(持久的)! El ectronic cigarettes and the packages they come in can also b e reused, which means that a lot of money can be saved. They are environmentally friendly. For starters, this kind of cig arettes cannot be put on unless with a source of an electrical current. This means that rooms and pathways do not, under a ny circumstances, get filled with smoke just because a smoke r passed by! The smoke is done away, meaning the air, evenaround a smoker, is always fresh! Disposals(处理) for the cigarettes have also been invented so that there ar e no harmful smoking bits and pieces carelessly thrown away which pollute the environment!E-cigarettes have made the world a better place at the very leas t. Some software, for example, allows kids to make decisions and see the results in different situations. The World Wide Web encourages young minds to move easily from link to link, topic to topic. The best software draws children into learning by making them curious—what if I click on this picture, drag this over here, visit that web site?Knowing how to use a computer also encourages a child’s co nfidence. Kids figure out quickly that computers are powerful, and mastering the machine makes them feel grown-up. In turn, feeling confident on a computer often translates toacademic(学术的)confidence. Researchers have found that attitudes toward writing, for example, improve when students write on a compu ter.Perhaps most importantly, computers can enrich family l. Forget the idea that computer kids are separated. Children li ke to use the computer withadults and other kids, asking questions and comparing results . “The Internet is a unique opportunity to bring resources hom e, ”notes Susan Haugland, PhD, , , author of Computer and Young Children:A World of Discovery.Although the benefits of computers are real, they have disadv antages, too. They must be ready for immediate use when fire breaks out. Most portable (手提式的) kinds operate for less than a minute, so they are useful on ly on small fires. The law requires ships, trains, buses and pl anes to carry extinguishers.Since fuel, oxygen (氧气) and heat must be present in order for fire to exist, one or more of these things must be removed or reduced to extinguis h a fire. If the heat is reduced by cooling the material below a certain temperature, the fire goes out. The cooling method is t he most common way to put out a fire. Water is the best cooli ng material because it is low in cost and easy to get.Another method of extinguishing fire is by cutting off the oxyg en. This is usually done by covering the fire with sand, steam or some other things. A blanket may be used do cover a small fire.A third method is called separation, which includes removing t he fuel, or material easy to burn, from a fire, so that it can find no fuel. The method that is used to put out a fire depends upon the ty pe of fire. Fires have been grouped in three classes. Fires in wood, paper, cloth and the like are called Class A fires. These materials usually help keep the fire on. Such fires can be sto pped most readily by cooling with water.44.If a fire breaks out on a bus, which of the follow should b e ready there for you to use?A.SandB.WaterC.A blanket.D.An extinguisher. 45.To cover a small piece of burning wood with a basin in or der to stop the fire is an example of _______.A.separating the fireB.reducing the heatC.removing the fuelD.cutting off the oxygen46.In choosing how to put out a fire, we should first be clear about_______.A.when it breaks outB.how it comes aboutC.what kind it isD.where it takes place47.What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?A.Another class of firesB.Another type of extinguishersC.How fires break out.D.How fires can be prevented.(D)It is love that makes the world go round. And it is also love tha t has such power to overcome all difficulties. So we say: “Lov e will find a way.” As smile is a facial expression showing plea sure, affection, and friendliness, it is the commonest way to s how our good will perfectly without saying anything. A Chines e saying runs: “never hit a person who is smiling at you.” It is a time-proven fact that the smile is a language all its own— a univers al language—understood by the people of every nation in the world. We ma y not speak the same tongue as our foreign neighbors, but we smile in the same tongue. We need no interpreter for thus ex pressing love, happiness, or good will. One day while shopping in a small town in southern , it was m y misfortune to be approached by a clerk whose personality c ontradicted mine. He seemed most unfriendly and not at all co ncerned about my intended purchase. I bought nothing, and marched angrily out of the store. My anger toward that grew w ith each step. Outside, standing at the corner, was a dark-complexion young man in his early twenties. His expressive b rown eyes met and held mine, and in the next instant a beauti ful, dazzling smile covered his face. I gave in immediately. Th e magnetic power of that shining smile drove away all bitterne ss within me, and I found the muscles in my own face happily responding. “Beautiful day, isn’t it?” I remarked, in passing. Th en, suddenly something inside me sent me turning back. “I re ally owe you a debt of gratitude,” I said softly. His smile deepe ned, but he made no attempt to answer. A Mexican woman a nd two men were standing nearby. The woman stepped forward and eyed me inquiringly. “Carlos, he no speak English,” sh e volunteered. “You want I should tell him something?” In that moment I felt transformed. Carlos’ smile had made a big pers on of me. My friendliness and good will toward all mankind sto od ten feet tall. “Yes,” my reply was enthusiastic and sincere, “tell him I said ‘Thank you!’”“Thank you?” The woman seeme d slightly puzzled. I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave. “Just tell hi m that,” I insisted. “He’ll understand. I am sure!” Oh, what a s mile can do! Although I have never seen that young man agai n, I shall never forget the lesson he taught me that morning. From that day on, I became smile – conscious, and I practice t hat diligently, anywhere and everywhere, with everybody. Wh en I got excited in traffic, taking the right–of–way (公路用地) from the other car with my stupid mistake, I’d smile and sh rug my shoulders apologetically. This action on my part would always draw a good–natured smile in return. If the other fellow was at fault – and if I could remember my resolution in time! –he’d get a broad sm ile of understanding. This took a bit of doing at first. I’ll admit it wasn’t always easy, but it was fun. The results were sometim es amazing. Many times, a broad, friendly smile would compl etely turn aside ill–feeling and tension. I’m wondering now how many tragic accid ents could be avoided on our overcrowded highways, if every driver remembered to smile!40.The author got angry while shopping one day because .A.of the clerk’s unfriendliness and lack of concernB.of her misfortuneC.she failed to purchase what she intendedD.a dark–complexion young man laughed at her40.A【解析】细节理解题。

AIn 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉) restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new idea: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致性), for the brothers had developed a strict routine(程序) for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became surprisingly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the special attraction of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement included the right to duplicate(复制) the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches(拱门).Today McDonald’s is really a household name. Simon is able to pay attention to history for long.CDo you know what really troubles me? For some reason, words with silent letters have always bothered me. For example, consider these words: know, design, island, school, wrist, naughty, and salmon. All of these words have at least one letter thatis not typically pronounced, and these words are just a very small part of words with silent letters in them. Some words are even worse, consider this word: colonel. Not only are some letters not pronounced, but letters that are not even there are pronounced.Even foreign languages, especially French, are guilty of this needless complexity and confusion. I know there must be some main historical reasons why the words are spelled and pronounced the way they are, but that does not mean bad traditions mustcontinue to survive. Especially if they are no longer logical.Unfortunately, there is very little that anyone can do for i t, because there’s no group of people who can change or have the right to change the English language for everyone. However, the only thing we can do is make changes in the way we talk and write in hopes that it catches on. For example, I pronounce the let ter “l” in salmon on purpose to make people annoyed and to sound more different or complicated.I even pronounce colonel the correct or French way.I can only hope these two minor changes to the English language make sense to you, and you will help to keep up these minor changes forever in your everyday life.64. Which of the following is the main reason for silent letters?A. French language.B. Historical reasons.C. Some linguistsD. Bad traditions.65. The underlined phrase “catches on” probably means “________”.A. becomes popularB. gets acrossC. follows the fashionsD. doesn’t fall behind66. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. Troubles in everyday lifeB. Traps in English wordsC. Words with silent lettersD. Necessary changes of languagesDAttempt a guess at the following question: In the English-speaking world, which country has the least affordable homes? You are wrong if you guessed the US, even with the housing bubble (气泡) and main sadness. Nor is it the UK, where prices have risen because demand is far from supply. According to a recent survey of 227 cities around the globe, you must go south of the equator (赤道) to Australia to find the priciest homes. The report meas ured a city’s housing market along the following guidelines. An “affordable” home required three times or less of the average family’s income to purchase. At four times earnings, a home fell into the “unaffordable” category. And a “seriously unaffordable” home needed five times a family’s income. In Australia, homes in the least affordable city cost just about 9.5 times the average income. Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne were only a little under this figure.Australian officials offered little comment, apart from a general statement on the dismal findings. These prices make the possibility that many Australians will one day own a home largely unbelievable. Land rationing (配给制) and excessive development charges have raised prices, and the problem will only be solved through urgent action by the Rudd government. Some American cities were also included on the least affordable list, four of which were in California. America is still involved in a mortgage(抵押)crisis, though, affecting the affordability of homes. Yet a number of US cities garnered “affordable” status, namely Dallas and Kansas. Australia had no cities listed in the top fifty places with affordable homes. The survey suggests that you can find affordable homes in most places, just notif you’re Australian and choose to live down under.67. To buy an affordable house, you should pay _____.A. 3 times or less of the average family’s incomeB. 4 times or less of the average family’s incomeC. 5 times or less of the average family’s incomeD. 9.5 times or less of the average family’s income68. What caused the prices of houses to increase in Australia?A.The rising family’s income. B.The demand over supply.C.The excessive development charges. D.The decrease of land.69.The underlined word “dismal” in Paragraph 3 may mean _____.A. cheerful B. satisfactory C. difficult D.sad70. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A.
