In one of my first classes, I studied the poetry of Thomas Eliot. I felt hopeless when my high school Webster’s Dictionary tuned silent each time I tried to look up words like “estaminet” or “juvescence”. I needed a new book the Oxford English Dictionary, whose price was $300.On a cold night, my husband and I set out for a bookstore in Atlanta. I breathlessly asked the clerk for my book, which was kept far behind the counter, paid quickly so that I would have no time to imagine people’s thoughts that I was mad, and rushed back to our truck, carrying the great weight of Oxford English Dictionary.Don’t get me wrong: I never turn down a trip to the library, but I know that there is something mysterious and spiritual ---to own your own good books, and to spend your earthly money on a piece of heavenly art to pass it down to future generations.I have been the recipient of many of these passed-down books. My father worked as a plumber, who was often busy repairing things like water pipes. He never made the extravagant (奢侈的) purchases as I did, but I remember his going to the Aspen Used Book store on the weekends. He would take hundreds of used books and trade them for wonderful sets of classics. He would also go in there and come out with how-to books about fixing the leaks. He would neatly arrange the classics in our basement where I, at the age of nine or ten, would spend all summer there reading Greek and Roman myths. One day, I’ll have to leave my library, but I’m pleased to know that my children will have all my books about Southern literature and modern poetry. They might say, “Look, Mama surely loved FlanneryO’Connor.” Or “I wonder why she had three copies of T.S. Eliot: Collected Poems?”4. Why did the author feel hopeless about her high school dictionary?A. It was out of date and of no use.B. It failed to cover enough words.C. It often gave wrong explanations.D. It couldn’t offer the exact meaning.5. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?A. The Oxford English Dictionary was very popular.B. The author felt it an adventure to buy the dictionary.C. The author regretted buying the dictionary at first.D. Few people would buy the Oxford English Dictionary.6. What do we know about the author’s father?A. He was inspired to read books by his daughter.B. He loved books despite not being well educated.C. He improved his professional skills through books.D. He spent lots of his salary buying wonderful book.7. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?A. Books at all costsB. Father’s special bookstoreC. The Oxford English DictionaryD. Studying the poetry of T.S.

比如37题,选择合适的小标题,许多考生根据第二自然段中出现的short-term or long-term goals 选择了错误的选项set long-term goals, 而忽视了最后一句:in other words, keep focusing on the future。
3.完形填空本次考试中的完形填空也是和以往一样的记叙文题材,文章内容贴近生活,描述的是作者为父母亲准备圣诞礼物的一次经历。

However, a new report suggests shortening school holidays to stop children forgetting what they have learnt during the long summer break. Instead of three school terms, it says, there should be five eight-week terms. And there should be just four weeks off in the summer, with a two-week break between the other terms.Sonia Montero has two children at primary school and works full-time. She supports the idea. “The kids,” she says, “have much longer holidays than me and I can’t afford to take several weeks off work, so I need someone to take care of them. But nobody wants the work in the summer months — they all have holidays of their own.”Not surprisingly, some young people disagree. Student Jason Panos says, “It’s a stupid idea. I would hate staying at school in the summer. It’s unfair, too. The people who suggest this had long school holidays when they were young, but now they want to stop us enjoying the summer. The kids in Spain and America have much longer holidays than here, but they don’t forget everything they’ve learnt in a fewmonths.”Nadia Salib agrees. “Sure,”she says, “the first week at school after the summer is never easy, but you soon get back into it. The real problem round here is that kids get bored after so many weeks out of school, and then some of them start causing trouble. But the answer is to give them something to do, not make everyone stay in school longer.”21. Why is Sonia in support of shorter school holidays?A. She doesn’t get any summer holidays in her job.B. She is worried that her children will forget what they’ve learnt.C. She can’t afford to pay someone to look after her children.D. She can’t get anyone to look after her children in summer.22.What does Jason say about long summer holidays?A. They have no influence on children’s education.B.They can help children forget about school.C. It doesn’t make any sense.D. Schools in other countries don’t have them.23. What is the main idea of the text?A. It has been decided that summer holidays should be shortened.B. Students are angry that school holidays have been changed.C. Not everyone agrees to change school holidays.D. Teenagers are worried that they will be busy during summer holidays.BThere was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water his flowers, he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and dilapidated one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best.Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled(溢出). The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path.Sometimes the new bucket would say, “See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I don't know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!”And all that the old bucket could say was. “I know I’m not very useful, but I can only do my best. I’m happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least.”One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, “You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path.”Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare〔光秃秃的〕earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden.24. What does the underlined word “dilapidated” probably mean?A. DirtyB. DarkC. Worn-outD. Plain-looking.25. What was the old bucket ashamed of?A. His past.B. His aging.C. His manner.D. His leaking.26. The new bucket made conversations with the old one mainly to _______.A. laugh at the old oneB. take pity on the old oneC. show off its beautiful looksD. praise the gardener’s kindness27. Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?A. Because it had its own function.B. Because it stayed in its best condition.C. Because it was taken as a treasure.D. Because it was used to keep a balance.CTwo hundred years ago the English poet William Wordsworth wrote “I Wander’dLonely as a Cloud”, a poem that expresses a basic spirit of early English Romanticism. What makes this poem an example of Romantic thinking? It isn’t just that Wordsworth chooses to write about a natural scene: it is the way he describes the scene as if it had human emotions. For him, nature is not merely a neutral(无感情色彩的) mixture of scenery, colors, plants, rocks, soil, water and air. It is a living force that feels joy and sadness, shares human pain and even tries to educate us human beings by showing us the beauty of life.Wordsworth’s home, Dove Cottage, is now one of the most popular destinations in the Lake District. You can go on a tour of the garden which William planted with wild flowers and which survived in his backyard even after they disappeared from the area. “He always said that if he hadn’t been a poet, he would have been a wonderful landscape gardener,” says Allan King of the Wordsworth Trust. The place near Ullswater, where Wordsworth saw the daffodils(水仙花), is at the southernmost end of the lake. The lake is wide and calm at this turning point. There’s a bay where the trees have had their soil eroded(侵蚀) by lake water so that their roots are shockingly exposed. You walk along from tree to tree, hardly daring to breathe, because you are walking in the footprints of William from two centuries ago. The first group of daffodils appear, but they aren’t tall yellow trumpets(小号状的花) proudly swinging in the gentle wind. They are tiny wild daffodils, most of them still green and unopened, in groups of six or seven. They’re grouped around individual trees rather than collecting together. But as you look north, from beside a huge ancient oak, you realize this is what delighted Wordsworth: group after group of the things, spread out to left and right but coming together in your sight so that they form a beautiful, pale-yellow carpet. What you’re seeing at last is nature transformed by human sight and imagination.28.What was Wordsworth’s attitude to nature?A. Nature had a character of its own.B. Nature could talk to people.C. Man could influence nature.D. Nature was human-like.29.We can learn from the text that Dove Cottage ____________.A. has gardens designed by a landscape gardenerB. has a wide range of flowers in its gardenC. receives a lot of visitors every yearD. is famous for an actor30.In what way is the scene at the southernmost end of the lake different from Wordsworth’s description?A. All the daffodils are green and small.B. The daffodils are fewer and samller.C. There are no daffodils around trees.D. There are no daffodils by the lake.31.The writer implies that the poem describes ____________.A. exactly what Wordsworth saw in detailB. the effect the daffodils had on WordsworthC. what Wordsworth saw around an ancient oakD. groups of daffodils on the left and on the rightDWanted, Someone for a KissWe’re looking for producers to join us on the sound of London Kiss 100 FM. Sunitha Suresh was a college student when her grandmother had major surgery and was put in intensive care (重症监护).This meant her family couldn't always be with her. They decided to put her favorite music on an iPod so she could listen around the clock. It was very calming, Suresh says. “She knew that someone who loved her had left that music for her and she was in a familiar place.”Suresh could see that the music relaxed her grandmother and made her feel less anxious, but she wondered if she also felt less pain. That would make sense, because anxiety can make people more vulnerable (脆弱的)to pain. At the time Suresh was majoring in biomedical engineering with a minor (兼修)in music cognition (认知)at Northwestern University where her father, Sanlhanam Suresh, is a professor of anesthesiology (麻醉)and pediatrics (儿科).So the father and daughter decided to do a study. And since Dr Suresh works with children, they decided to look at how music chosen by the children themselves might affect their tolerance for pain.It was a small study, involving 60 patients between 9 and 14 years old. All the patients were undergoing big operations that required them to stay in the hospital for at least a couple of days. Right after surgery, patients received narcotics (麻醉药)to control pain. The next day they were divided into three groups. One group heard 30 minutes of music of their choice, one heard 30 minutes of stories of their choice and one listened to 30 minutes of silence via noise canceling headphones (降噪耳机).After a 30-minute period, the children who listened to music or books reduced their pain burden by 1 point on a 10-point scale. That might not sound like much, but Sunitha Suresh says it’s the equivalent (相等物)of taking an over-the-counter pain medication like Advil or Tylenol. The findings suggest that doctors may be able to use less pain medication for their pediatric patients. And that's a good thing, says Santhanam Suresh, as children are smaller and are more likely to suffer side effects. So the less pain medication, he says, the better.63. What inspired Sunitha Suresh to do the research on the effects of music?A. Her father’s study into music cognition.B. Her desire to find a new way to help patients relieve pain.C. A book that claims anxiety can make people more vulnerable to pain.D. Her grandmother’s experience of recovery.64. During the research, the participants .A. were all patients under 12 years oldB. received narcotics to control pain after surgeriesC. were required to stay in the hospital for a couple of monthsD. were divided into three groups to listen to three different kinds of music65. What did Suresh and her father find out from their research?A. Music did reduce the children's pain burden to a certain decree.B. Music was even more effective than pain medication for the children.C. Books didn’t reduce the children's pain burden at all.D. The longer the children listened to music, the less pain they felt.66. It can be inferred from the text that________________ .A. children arc more sensitive to music than adultsB. children can easily get addicted to pain medicationC. children are more likely to suffer from the side effects of pain medicationD. children may be treated by combining medication and music to reduce their painDThe hotel’s chief house officer, Ogilvie, who had declare hde would appear at the Croydon’s suite an hour after his telephone call actually took twice that time. As a result both the Duke and the Duchess(公爵和公爵夫人)were very nervous when the door bell soundedThe Duchess went to the door herself. The Duchess looked pointedly at the half-burned cigar in the fat man’s mouth. “My husband and I find strong smoke ext remely unpleasant. Would you kindly put that out?”The house officer looked over with his piggy eyes with a funny expression on his face. His eyes moved on to sweep the big, tastefully furnished(配有家具)room, along with the Duke who faced them uncertainly.“P retty neat set-up you folks got.” Taking this time, Ogilvie removed the cigar, knocking off the ash and threw the butt(烟蒂)toward the fireplace on his right. He missed, and the butt fell upon the carpet. The Duchess’s lips tightened. She said sharply, “I im agine you did not come here to discuss our room.”The fat body shook in a loud laugh. “No ma’am; can’t say I did. I like nice things, though.” He lowered the level of his voice. “Like that car of yours. The one you keep here in the hotel, Jaguar, ain’t it?”“In what imaginable way does our car trouble you?”As if the question from the Duchess had been a sign, the house officer’s manner changed. He asked sharply, “Who else is in this place?”It was the Duke who answered, “No one. We sent them out.”“There are things it pays to check.” Moving with surprising speed, the fat man walked around the suite, opening doors and examining the space behind them. Obviously he knew the room well. After reopening and closing the door, he returned, apparently satisfied, to the living room.“Now then,” he said. “You two were in that hit-’n-run.”She met his eyes directly. “What are you talking about?”“Don’t play games, lady. This is for real.” He took out a fresh cigar and bit off the end. “You saw the papers. There’s plenty on the TV, too.”Two high points of color appeared in the paleness of the Duchess’s cheeks. “What you are suggesting is the most…”“I told you-cut it out!” The words came forth with sudden cruelty, all pretense of politeness gone. Turning away from the Duke, Ogilvie waved the unlighted cigarunder Duchess’s nose. “You listen to me, your high-an’-mightiness. This city’s burning mad—the police, mayor(市长),and everyone else. When they find who did that last night, who killed that kid and its mother, then escape d, they’ll throw the book, and never mind who it hits, or whether they got fancy titles neither…67. "It happened over three years ago,"Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do."Just don't tell my mother,"said Fee numbly(麻木地)."And no one did!Oh,God!My poor, poor Frank!"Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said."Fee,pack your things. We'll go to see him."She half﹣rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared asif dead."I can't go,"she said to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us?"Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes.Frank had always brought feelings such as guilt and shame,we often do everything possible to avoid it,"We're taught from our earliest days that if you quit something,it means you're a failure,"says the psychologist Will Meek. He,however, suggests we view quitting differently.Quitting is like deciding to rearrange a room:you've grown comfortable with the status, and it can be hard to picture the end result or even see why change is necessary. And yet, there's the upsetting feeling that you're no longer entirely satisfied with your current circumstances, perhaps even that you've stopped making progress. While it's not out of the question for feelings of regret to surface after a major refit, leaving a position, project or situation can reveal exciting possibilities, making you feel inspired and renewed.Quitting, often happens in situations where we're unhappy, fearful or have determined we have no other choice, factors that can have ill effects on our health.Perhaps you find your work unfulfilling,or you've jumped into a new relationship before you're ready﹣﹣and, asa result, you're operating under intense pressure."If stress is enduring and not managed well,it can start to take a toll,"says Meek.According to the American Psychological Association, long﹣term, ongoing stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure and heart attack so walking away from whatever is causing it can deliver significant phsical and emotional health benefits."We often see a reduction in the stress hormone cortisol(应激激素皮质醇)",which can lower blood pressure and may even decrease the heart rate,"says Dr Alex Lickerman,a GP and expert on developing mental adaptability.Leaving situations that fail to bring you joy can leave you with sufficient time to explore where your heart is truly leading you.In a study that was published in 1999,then Harvard University professor Hermina Ibarra looked at how bankers tried different roles that required new skill sets﹣﹣someone who spent a lot of time dealing with computers, for instance, was asked to take on personal interactions.Subjects(研究对象)wre especially drawn to acting out a version of their future selves through‘imitation strategies'﹣﹣an approach they compared to‘trying on different clothes.'Mark Franklin, the president of CareerCycles, suggests a similar approach as a way to figure out what your true desires might be in your post﹣quitting life and foresee your future self."Pretend to be a certain kindof person,or go and meet others who are doing what you want to do,"he says."Try it on,see how it feels and decide if it's a good fit for you."It may not feel like it at the time, but just moving on from a situation that's not quite right can help you get back on track.63.It can be inferred from paragraph 2 that quitting may brim us feelings of being both .A.guilty and ashamedB.stupid and enthusiasticC.troubled and hopefulD.inspired and determined64.The phrase"take a toll"(paragraph 3)can be best replaced by" ".A.developmental adaptabilityB.bring about changesC.keep up the pressureD.have a bad effect65.An approach suggested by Mark Franklin similar to'trying on different clothes'is for .A.helping people find what truly suits them in careerB.telling capable employees from inadequate onesC.training employees to acquire different working skills D.providing people with opportunities to have a role play66.It can be concluded from the passage that .A.quitting is a track that only the timid will choose to follow B.personal interaction can be a must for reducing emotional pressure C.mental adaptability can be improved by the stress hormone cortisol D.knowing when to stop is wise and may make dreams happen.Section C7.A.What accounts for this culture of generosity?B.This belief is central to the national character.C.How can a sense of generosity be cultivated?D.Americans'generosity is rooted in selfless behavior.AB.America's philanthropic nature is not restricted to the rich.AC.The formal practice of philanthropy traces its origin to a Founding Father.Charity﹣Humanity's most kind and generous desire﹣is a timeless and borderless virtue, dating at least to the dawn of religious teaching.Philanthropy(慈善行为)as we understand it today, however,is a distinctly American phenomenon, inseparable from thenation that shaped it.From colonial leaders to modern billionaires like Buffett,Gates and Zuckerberg, the tradition of giving is woven into the national DNA.(67)Benjamin Franklin,an icon of individual industry and frugality(节俭)even in his own day, understood that with the privilege of doing well came the price of doing good. When he died in 1790,Franklin thought to future generations, leaving in trust two gifts of 1,000 Ib.of sterling silver﹣one to the city of Boston, the other to Philadelphia.According to his instruction,a portion of the money could not be used for 200 years. While Franklin's gifts lay in wait, the tradition he established evolved alongside the young nation.(68)Often far less famed men and women have played a critical role in philanthropy's evolution. One of my personal heroes is Julius Rosenwald, who helped construct more than 5,300 schools across the segregated(种族隔离)Sout and opened classroom doors to a generation of African﹣American students.(69)The answer is not just to benefit others.Tax reduction, for one, encourages the rich people to give. And philanthropy has long helped improve the public image of everyone from immoral capitalists to the new tech elite.More troubling, however, are the foundational problems that make philanthropy sonecessary.Just before his eath,Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.wrote,"Philanthropy is praise﹣worthy, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary."Franklin's gifts represent a broader principle. We are guardians of a public trust, even if our capital came from private enterprise, and our most important obligation is ensuring that the system works more equally and more justly for more people.(70)America's greatest strength is not the fact of perfection, but rather the act of perfecting.Summary Writing Directions:Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.8.For thousands of years, people have sailed across the oceans to trade, explore and transport goods. However, not every ship arrives at its port of destination.Weather, war, navigation mistakes and bad luck have caused many ships to sink to the bottom of the ocean. These shipwrecks, which are estimated to number more than three million, have long fascinated us.In addition to being historically important, they sometimes contain great riches.Historical research is a key motivator for shipwreck hunters.Ships carrying documents and artifact can teach us about ancient civilizations and important events. For instance,in 1997 the Pandora, which sank in 791,was discovered off the coast of Australia. The findings from the ship helped us understand the events surrounding the famous mutiny (暴动)on another ship﹣﹣﹣﹣﹣the Bounty.Another important discovery off the US coast in 1996 is widely believed to be the Queen Ann's Revenge, the flagship of the private Blackbeard.Profit is another motive for shipwreck exploration,as companies use advanced sonar, robots and retrieval equipment to find treasure ships. One such firm is Odyssey Marine Exploration. The company has found hundreds of ships, including,in 2007,a Spanish sailing ship containing 500,000 silver coins. The ship, which sank 200 years ago in the Atlantic Ocean, carried a treasure estimated to be worth $500 million.Soon after the discovery,a long legal battle over ownership rights took place between the company and the Spanish government.Cases like these are part of an ongoing debate about protecting historically important ships from treasure hunters.Translation Directions ;Translate the following sentences into English ,using the words given in the brackets.9. 1.iphone 7s 2.A trip to London 3.An experience as a volunteer.2016-2017学年上海市闵行区七宝中学高二(下)期末英语试卷参考答案与试题解析II. I have a neighbor we call “Happy”. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her say a harsh (苛刻) word to anyone or about anyone.
Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbors watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben’s beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her back yard. Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighborhood over for an “all-day food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn’t know what was about to take place.
By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra, and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By five o’clock, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we p layed games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(收成)of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful。
