First thing that passed through my mind was that it must be a misunderstanding, such a look was not meant for me, but later I saw the old lady’s face changing every time she saw me, at least seven times, no more doubt that she was very angry with me.I was confused, shocked, and near anger, my brains were spinning, trying to figure out h ow’s and why’s but somehow managed to not show it on my face. Went home, slept a night over it and decided that I have to find a way to break the ice with this lady. The very next day I bought some nice chocolate praying to see her again and when I caught sight of her, went straight to her and apologized telling her “I am so very sorry if I angered you, I had no such intention, please accept my apologizes”, and handled her the chocolate. Surprised, she told me not to mind her, and apologized too. It was an awkward moment, but we made peace and the grimaces换成embarrassment is/ are replaced by smiles now.I am very grateful for this experience, it shows me I still have plenty of work to do with my mind, I learned how it is not easy to take knowledge of, accept and forgive acts that we may feel as unfair, and it taught me of possibilities about fixing a conflict. Best advice to keep for myself? Do not react, do not be quick to judge, sleep it over, and throw in a pinch of empathy for self as well as others.(304词)24. In the same way that a mountain climber dreams of climbing the world's highest mountain, I dreamed about flying non-stop around the world.I spent six years planning the flight and failed twice before I and my team managed to succeed. For some reason, we had to go first to North Africa to catch the right winds. That added 10 ,000 kilometers, and another week, to our journey. But because of this, our flight broke all the records for distance and time spent in the air.The most memorable part of the trip for me is that we lived in the air for 20 days and that the rising sun was the most amazing thing we saw. We had to go out of the balloon’s capsule , in which we were transported, three times while in the air to repair the fuel system. We didn’t have any safety equipment but when you are in a situation like that, you just do what you have to do without thinking about feeling afraid.Landing was a fantastic moment. I remember that when I got out of the capsule, I looked at my footprint in the sand. I remembered the astronaut Neil Armstrong, who was so happy to put his footprint on the moon,so far away from Earth. At that moment,I was so happy to have my foot back on Earth!24. Their flight covered 10,000 kilometers.26. Why did the balloonists get out of the capsule during the flight?A. To fight their fear.B. To do some repair work.C. To admire the rising sun.D. To check safety equipment.27. The author mentioned Neil Armstrong to show his .A. regretB. surpriseC. respectD. pleasureCAre you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slowdown and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate.A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problems such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep canbe helpful.28.Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?A. Because you eat too much for lunch.B. Because it’s hot in summer.C. Because your body temperature goes down at that time.D. Because you didn’t have a good sleep last night.29. What can we learn about “naps” according to the last paragraph?A. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.B. Doctors need to take naps while employers don’t.C. If you take naps every day, you’ll never suffer from heart disease.D. Taking naps regularly is beneficial to people’s health.30.What can we infer from the passage?A. If you get up at 6:30 am, you’d better take a nap at about 1:30 pm.B. Taking a nap whenever you want will do good to your health.C. You will feel less sleepy if you sleep for a long time.D. You’ll feel sleepy at regular inter vals(间隔).31. What would be the best title for the text?A. Just for a RestB. All for a NapC. A Special Sleep PatternD. Taking Naps in Warmer ClimateD“An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Similarly, if we drink a little more water ever day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often. A healthy diet is made up of water and a great many different kinds of foods. We know that healthy foods like fruits, vegetables and fish, are important as they provide us with energy and fiber, without giving us too much fat and sugar. But why is water important? The human body needs water to survive. Water is important as it carries poisons and waste out of our bodies. However, doctors advise us to drink plenty of water, much more than the small amount we need to stay alive. Some doctors believe that water is important for our health in all kinds of ways. They believe that a great many illnesses and health problems stars as a result of dehydration—a lack of water in the body. Most people are dehydrated at least some of time, although they probably don’t know it. It is surprising to learn that if we feel thirsty, we are already in the first stages of dehydration. In fact, we are advised to drink water before we feel thirsty. These doctors think that health problems such as headaches, high blood pressure and asthma could be helped if people drink more water. They also believe that drinking more water can help people who are overweight. Water contains no calories so it will not make us put on weight. If we drink water, we will probably drink less sugary soft drinks such as Coca-cola. Doctors also believe that drinking more water may stop people from overeating. They say that many people think that they are hungry when they are, in fact, thirsty. Doctors suggest, therefore, that we eat less food and drink more water. There are still many health problems that cannot be solved by drinking water, so we should not stop going to seeing the doctor completely. However, if we make a decision to drink water every day, we may find that we need to go to the doctor a lot less often.32.From the text, we know water can carry_________.A. energy and fiber in our bodiesB. poisons and waste out of our bodiesC. sugar and fat out of our bodiesD. fruit, vegetables and fish in our bodies33. Some doctors think that________.A. people eat too much sugarB. water is not important for our healthC. we should go to the doctor less oftenD. some health problems are caused by a lack of water34. Lack of water caused people to put on weight too much because_______.A. water has no caloriesB. it makes them hungryC. they think they are thirsty and eat too muchD. they think they are hungry and eat too much35.Where can we see the text?A.A post(帖子)B. With his vast knowledge and experience, he tries to strike a balance between environmental problems and market economies.Fabien is well known for his study of sharks. During 2000-2002, he created a TV special called Attack of the Mystery Shark based on the shark attacks that occurred along the New Jersey shoreline in the summer of 1916. Then in 2003-2006, with the help of a large crew, Fabien created a shark submarine (潜艇) that enabled him to put himself inside the shark world, providing people with a rare view of the mysterious and often misunderstood creatures. For the next four years (2006-2010), Fabien was part of a series called, Ocean Adventures, which offered a rare look into some of the most fantastic ocean species (物种) and environments. In 2010, Fabien started Plant A Fish, a nonprofit project for children to help restore local water ecosystems by replanting key ocean species. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority (优先).This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values, as well as the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music isobviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.Music provides a kind of perception (感知) that cannot be gained any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotional meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all. The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings "talk" to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, and our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.8. According to Paragraph 1, students_________.A. regard music as a way of entertainmentB. disagree with their parents on educationC. view music as an ignored subjectD. prefer the arts to science9. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to ___________.A. compare it with rock musicB. show music reflects a societyC. introduce American musical traditionsD. prove music influences people's lifestyles10. According to the passage, the arts and science________.A. approach the world in different waysB. explore different phenomena of the worldC. express people's feelings in different waysD. explain what it means to be human differently11. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Music education deserves more attention.B. Music should be of top education priority.C. Music is an effective communication tool.D. Music education makes students more imaginative.DAlibaba Cloud and the Hangzhou city government announced the launch of ET City Brain 2.0, a cloud—powered and Al-driven urban traffic-management system that aims to increase the city’s efficiency. After over two years of testing in Alibaba’s home base, ET City Brain has become the new infrastructure (基础设施) for Hangzhou, with a total coverage of 420 square kilometers in area, including over 1,300 traffic lights. Over 200 traffic officers are connected via mobile phones, enabling them to receive real-time alerts on any traffic-related emergencies. In version 2.0, the system will optimize the city’s firefighting abilities by providing key information to firefighters, such as water pressure, the number and position of fire hydrants (消防栓) in a given area, the location of gas pipes and other details they need to know. The information is instant, making the entire firefighting process faster, safer and more accurate.City Brain gives meaning to data. By using AI and advanced algorithms (计算程序), City Brain is able to analyze a large amount of data and turn them into useful information in real-time speed. As a result of City Brain’s ability to predict traffic flow, detect accidents and provide instant feedback, Hangzhou has dropped from 5th to the 57th on the list of China’s most congested ci ties. Hangzhou is probably the only city that can tell you how many cars are on the street at any given time.In the case of medical emergencies, City Brain is able to change traffic lights, so emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks can head to the scene without interruption, accelerating their arrival time by 49%.Dr. Wang Jian, the head of Alibaba’s Technology Steering Committee who invented the term “City Brain”, said the system is designed to empower a city to act quickly and directly. It is more than just about traffic management. It’s really about how to make city more livable at a time of shrinking natural resources around the globe. “It is a matter of sustainability, while using as little natural resources as possible,” Wang said, “This is just the beginning.”12.What benefit will ET City Brain bring?A. AA. Book TheaterB. BookmobileC. Computer TutorD. Reader Desk2. The purpose of the advertisement is to _________ .A. attract students to librariesB. offer job opportunitiesC. raise money for librariesD. introduce new booksBIt's 3 o'clock and you've been hard at work. As you sit at your desk, a strong desire for chocolate overcomes you. You try to busy yourself to make it go away. But it doesn't. Here is another situation. Perhaps you are not feeling well. The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection between the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone (荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.A craving is more complex. It activates (使活跃) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. Because of this, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure. In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short periodof time lessened food cravings. So, the next time you crave something very special, know that your brainmay be more to blame than your stomach.4. The author describes two situations in the first paragraph to _______.A. remind readers of their own special food.B. deepen the understandingof hunger.C. report the discovery of craving study.D. introduce the topic of the whole passage.5. What do we learn about food craving?A. It shows food is linked to feelings.B. It ensures a person survives hunger.C. It means the stomach functions well.D. It proves the brain decidesyour appetite.6. What's the likely result of dieting?A. The decrease of chemicals.B. Theincrease of food desire.C. The refusal of fat and sugar.D. The disappearance of appetite.7. And our ancestors already understood it well. As an old proverb says, “Ittakes an entire village to raise a child.” That is being quoted more and more oftenthese days. And I’m pleased about that.Parents need to be involved in their children’s education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft orcoaching a child’s sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child’s education. And don’t forget to communicate with teachers—they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together.Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. There are other ways such as helping with homework. reading to a child, coaching a children’s team, providing emotional support, helping solve problems and building self-esteem(自尊). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.Businesses can also help shape our children’s future—invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how products are made; how machinery works. Researchers at UCLA want to see how sedentary behavior (sitting for long periods of time) influences the health of the brain, especially regions of the brain that are important to memory formation.UCLA researchers gathered 35 people aged 45 to 75 and asked about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they spent sitting over the previous work. Each person had a high-resolution MRI (热分辨磁共振成像)scan, which provides a detailed look at the medial temporal lobe, or MTL, a brain region involved in the formation of new memories. The researchers found that sedentary behavior is an important predictor of thinning of the MTL and that physical activity, even at high levels, is not enough to compensate the harmful effects of sitting for long periods.“This study does not prove that too much sitting causes thinner brain structures, but instead that more hours spent sitting are associated with thinner regions,”researchers said. In addition, the researchers focused on the hours spent sitting, but did not ask participants if they took breaks during this time. The researchers next hope to follow a group of people for a longer duration to determine if sitting causes the thinning and what role gender (性別), race, and weight might play in brain health related to sitting.“MTL thinning can be an indication of cognitive (认知的) decline in middle-aged and older adults. Reducing sedentary behavior may be a possible target for measures designed to improve brain health in people at risk for Alzheimer(阿尔茨海默)disease,” researchers said.12.
