Passage 1

In the United States, Halloween is a holiday for children. It is also

called "All Hallows' Eve," and it is celebrated on October 31st.

Children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating, which means they

go from house to house asking for treats, such as candy, chocolate, and

fruit. If they do not get a treat, they might play a trick on the people

who do not give them one.

Halloween has its roots in ancient Celtic and Roman traditions. The

Celts believed that on this day, the spirits of the dead would return to

Earth. They would leave offerings of food and drink on their doorsteps

to prevent the spirits from causing harm. The Romans later incorporated

their own traditions into Halloween, such as wearing costumes to imitate

ghosts and spirits.

Today, Halloween is a time for fun and excitement. Many people also

enjoy carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, which are placed on their

front porches to scare away evil spirits.
