Noah's Ark and the Flood

God saw how great wickedness had become and

decided to wipe mankind from the face of the earth.

However, one righteous man among all the people of that

time, Noah, found favor in God's eyes. With very specific

instructions, God told Noah to build an ark for him and

his family in preparation for a catastrophic flood that

would destroy every living thing on earth.

1. fix, repair, mend

fix 表示重新“调”物体的结构，把松散的部件固定结实，将分离

的物体的各部分装配起来。

repair 对象范围很广，从房屋、道路、机器到日常生活必需品，表示

使受到一定损失或失灵的东西恢复其形状或功能。

mend 表示修补被损坏的东西， 使其恢复原样(包括用针、线来缝补)，

一般指较小的物品。

如： He has had his radio fixed.他已经请人修他的收音机了。

They are repairing the house.他们在修缮那所房子。

My mother is mending my skirt.我妈妈正在缝补我的裙子。

2. beat, win

beat 多表示“打败，胜过”之意，接的宾语多是表示竞争对手的人

或队的名词。

win 通常接表示比赛、奖品之类的名词作宾语，不可以接表示人的

名词作宾语。

如： You beat me in the race, but I’ll beat you at tennis.

赛跑你胜过了我，但网球我会赢你。

Which team won the football match? 哪个队赢了足球赛？

3. offer, provide

offer 指“提出，提供，呈现”，表示向别人提供可接受也可拒绝的

某物， 如帮助、服务或物品， 这可能是对方要求的也可能是自

己主动提出的。常用短语： offer to do sth.(主动)提出做某事，

offer sb sth. (主动)为某人提供某物。

provide 指“供给,提供”，强调有预见， 并通过储存或准备的方式为某

事做准备，以便在需要时提供所需的物品。常和 for ，with 连

用，牵涉到金钱时， provide 往往含有“免费供给”的意味。

如： He offered me a job, but I didn’t accept.他提供给我一份工作，但我没有接受。
