In what sense does reading make a full man? From my perspective, a full man should have a positive world view and adopt an active philosophy of life, which are usually based on a balanced knowledge structure. Those are what reading can help us to obtain.
Francis Bacon says “Histories make men wise, poets, witty; the mathematics, subtle; natural philosophy, deep; moral, grave; logic and rhetoric, able to contend.”
Indeed, reading books of various fields contributes to perfect our knowledge structure and form critical thinking. Take history for example, it is like a mirror that reflects what is right and what is wrong. By looking into it, we can learn painful lessons of past events or gain precious experience to deal with present situation better. As a
result, less mistakes are made. By reading books on natural philosophy, we know
more about the mysterious world so that we think deep and are more likely to view the world in a dialectic materialistic way than a idealistic one. As to literature, we are experiencing different lifestyles and emotions as we follow the development of a
novel or a poem. We see people of various characters; we share with them their
happiness and soreness. In that way, we are able to taste what might not happen to us in real life, and then ask ourselves what we would do in that situation. That is why literature enthusiasts are usually more tolerant, more open-minded to diverse
opinions; that is why they compose themselves more easily once they are confronted by emergency.
As I have stated above, reading books of certain field brings certain knowledge and ability you lack. “There is no stond of impediment in the wit but may be wrought out by fit studies” Broad reading provides full knowledge and ability which gradually evolve into a way of thinking, a way of living. That is what makes a full man: a man with positive world view and active philosophy of life.。
