On the Writing Style and Language of Pride and PrejudiceName He yanxiNumber IBT17059[Abstract]Pride and Prejudice is a novel created by an English novelist,Jane Austen. The novel describes the story of the five daughters of the Bennetts. And the protagonist is Elizabeth. She met Darcy at the dance, but she heard that he was arrogant,so she always rejected him. Finally, after some twists,Elizabeth laid down her prejudice against Darcy, and Darcy laid down his pride, the lovers were married. The novel takes daily life as its material, which is different from the content and artificial writing method of the sentimental novel at that time.It vividly reflects the life and human feelings of British towns in a conservative state.[Key Words] contrast;satire;humor;view of marriageAnalysis of Writing TechniquesUsing the descriptive techniques of contrast and pretension, the characters’personality characteristics and their concepts of love and marriage are displayed.Contrastive technique is used many times throughout the novel.Several marriages in the novel are described by contrast.First,Lydia and Wickham’s unwise marriage, which ignores virtue and just satisfies lust. It’s hard to get permanent happiness in this kind of marriage;Even the marriage of Mr.Bennett and his wife is only obsessed with beauty when he was young, which makes respect and trust between husband and wife disappear shortly after marriage. So it’s also unhappy.Second,Charlotte and Collins’ unhappy marriage.Their marriage is based on money,so their emotional base is very weak.Third,Bingley and Jane’s marriage is a marriage in the traditional sense, because they have a deep emotional foundation.Although there are twists and turns in the process, the outcome is happy. The fourth is the marriage of Elizabeth and Darcy. From the beginning, they were filled with pride and prejudice to each other, but after the test of time, they finally came together. This kind of combination requires two people to communicate many times, make changes to each other, and create feelings. In the end, they got a happy marriage.Elizabeth and Darcy’s feelings is taken as the main line of the story. The novel fully demonstrates the importance of change and respect in the love.Only when two people love and respect each other, can a beautiful marriage be achieved. At the same time, marriage should be based on emotions.Marriage that combines with desire and money is unhappy after all.The characters in the novel are also shown by comparison. The first is to show the character by comparing two people. For example, the novel begins with a description of Bingley and Darcy.“Bingley was endeared to Darcy by the easiness, openness, ductility of his temper”“But Darcy was haughty, reserved, and fastidious, and his manners, though well bred, were not inviting”There are also descriptions of Mr.Bennett and Mrs.Bennett:“Mr.Bennett was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice.”“Her mind was less difficult todevelop. She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertaintemper.”The second is to reflect the change of character by comparing differentpersonalities before and after time. For example:Darcy was very arrogant when hefirst met Elizabeth:“She is tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me.”Later, when he saw her again at Pemberley,Darcy was very polite to her and heruncles, and wanted to introduce her sister to Elizabeth.Elizabeth was also prejudicedagainst Darcy from the beginning, even refused his proposal. In the end,Elizabeththought Darcy was the most suitable man for her,and tried to justify him to her fatherand Jane.Analysis of Language Behavior2.1 Using direct irony and negative humor to show the characteristics of charactersThe direct irony of the novel is mainly through the language description of the characters.Mrs.Bennett is one of the characters directly satirized in the novel.Forexample,at the beginning of the novel, she said:“Oh!single,my dear,to be sure!Asingle man of large fortune;four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for ourgirls!”“I am thinking of his marrying one of them”From the description,we can seea selfish and narrow-minded woman. She didn’t know much about Darcy, and alreadyregarded him as her property. She was anxious to marry any of her daughters to theyoung man just because he can earned four or five thousand pounds a year.Anotherexample is the description of Collins in the novel. The author uses satire to makehis vile features leap onto the paper. For example, before he appeared on the stage, anencapsulated letter showed the man’s posturing all over the place.“I cannot beotherwise than concerned at being the means of injuring your amiable daughters, andbeg leave to apologize for it,as well as to assure you of my readiness to make themevery possible amends.I flatter myself that my present overtures of goodwill arehighly commendable.”His style of writing is exaggerated, clumsy and amusing, whichreminds readers of his conceit and narrow face before they see him.Since then, allhis actions have confirmed that his personality is boring and arrogant at the sametime. He wanted to marry the daughter of the Bennetts as if he was favors for theBennetts. When Elizabeth refused his proposal,he pretentious belief“it is usual withyoung ladies to reject the addresses of the man whom they secretly.I am thereforeby no means discouraged by what you have just said, and shall hope to lead you tothe church.”The novel also uses humorous discourse to produce ironic effect.Forexample,Mr.Bennett said to Mrs.Bennett when she tired to persuade him to visit hisnew neighbor:“You and the girls may go,or you may send them by themselves, whichperhaps will be still better, for as you are as handsome as any of them,Mr.Bingleymight like you the best of the party.”Here,Mr.Bennett deliberately exaggeratedMrs.Bennett’s appearance and distorted the fact. This kind of humor language, whichmakes readers laugh.and plays a role in irony and criticism of characters.Anotherexample is that when Mr.Bennett received Collins’ letter,he said“Every time I readhis letter,I always feel that he was more attractive to me more than Wickham, although I valued the audacity and hypocrisy of my son-in-law”.He deliberately described dislike as like and disgust as esteem.Tn fact,he satirized the two men in a humorous way to press his disgust for them.2.2 Characters are represented through dialogueThe greatest feature of language creation in fiction is to use the expressive techniques of dialogue and monologue, which makes the inner thoughts of characters to be expressed directly. It plays an important role in promoting the plot development of story. For example,Lydia, who likes to speak colloquially, exposes her superficiality and ignorance.Mary likes to quote classics in her speech. It can be seen that she reads a lot of books, but is stiff and dull.Elizabeth’s witty but polite language shows her cleverness when she talks to others.ConclusionIn Pride and Prejudice, the creation of language is a major feature. The humor, irony, dialogue, monologue and other means of expression show author’s literary expression. In the novel, the author eulogizes Elizabeth and Darcy’s love-based marriage and expresses her view of marriage:Marriage should not be about money, status and desire.Jane Austen advocates the concept of marriage with both wealth and love.[Reference][1]安俐洁.浅析《傲慢与偏见》中简奥斯汀的婚姻观——基于达西的性格分析[J],2018[2]王宇红.《傲慢与偏见》英式文学语言创作风格探究[J].兰州教育学院学报,2018。
