After the Oscar-winning The English Patient, writer/director Anthony Minghella attempted another tricky literary adaptation with The Talented Mr. Ripley, which features heartthrob Matt Damon cast against type as a psychopathic bisexual murderer. Tom Ripley (Damon) is a bright and charismatic sociopath who makes his way in mid-'50s New York City as a men's room attendant and sometimes pianist, though his real skill is in impersonating other people, forging handwriting, and running second-rate scams. After being mistaken for a Princeton student, Tom meets the shipping tycoon father of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), who has traveled to the coast of Italy, where he's living a carefree life with his father's money and his beautiful girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Dickie's father will pay Ripley 1,000 dollars plus his expenses if he can persuade Dickie to return to America. As Ripley and Dickie become friends, Tom finds himself both attracted to Dickie and envious of his life of pleasure. In time, he decides that he would rather be Dickie Greenleaf than Tom Ripley, so rather than go back to his life of poverty, Ripley impulsively murders Dickie and assumes his identity. The Talented Mr. Ripley was based on the first of a series of novels featuring Tom Ripley written by Patricia Highsmith; the story was previously filmed in 1960 as Purple Noon, with Alain Delon as Ripley. ~ Mark Deming, RoviThe late '50s. New York lavatory attendant Tom Ripley (Damon) may not be conventionally talented, but he's very able when it comes to reacting on the spot, especially with little white lies. When shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf assumes he's an old college pal of his son Dickie (Law), Ripley's quick to snap up the opportunity to visit Europe, purportedly to lure the playboy home, but actually to sample la dolce vita for himself. But, having wormed his way into the affections of Dickie and his girlfriend Marge (Paltrow), he can't face losing his new-found life of leisure. Minghella's imaginative but mostly faithful adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's classic study of a sociopathic killer is a class act, in every sense. Not only is it an elegantly polished affair, with top notch performances all round, and magnificent camerawork and editing, it's also acutely aware of how class, money and sex shape desire and resentment, and of the distinctions between presenting a facade to the world, outright pretence and the more radical practice of reinventing oneself. It's into these registers that Minghella weaves the most intriguing and ironic undertones. In a chilling thriller, Matt Damon plays a master of assumed identities; Jim Carrey's eerie Andy Kaufman riff is barely more than skin-deep.In the movies, pathology and murder are often framed in deep shadow, as if horror only bloomed in dark places, but true epicureans of depravity know that cold creeps are coldest in the bright sunshine. The Talented Mr. Ripley -- based on the same 1955 Patricia Highsmith novel, the firstin her "Ripley" series, that served as the basis for René Clément's Purple Noon, starring Alain Delon -- is awash in the sensual yellows and caramels of Naples and Venice and San Remo and Rome. It's a gorgeously unsettling film. You can hide in the shadows, but luminescence exposes who you are, and the only escape is into another identity.Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) is a kind of learning-on-the-job psychopath whose chief talent is slipping into the guises of others. In New York, he casually convinces Herbert Greenleaf (James Rebhorn), a wealthy shipbuilder, that the man's expatriate son, Dickie (Jude Law), was a Princeton classmate, which results in an offer from the father to travel to Italy and bring back the free-spending scion. But once ensconced in seaside Naples with Dickie and his expensive-looking blonde girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow), Tom is in no hurry to wrap things up, and so, by revealing his mission, he becomes, in effect, a double agent. He makes himself over as Dickie, first by co-opting Dickie's dolce vita lifestyle and then by co-opting the man himself by murdering him.Tom's capacity for impersonation at first seems like the survival tactic of a rube among the well-heeled, but it turns out to be his essence. Writer-director Anthony Minghella keeps Tom in virtually every scene; his switching of identities from Dickie to Tom and back again, and his narrow escapes, are breathtaking. By keeping everything centered on Tom,Minghella makes us complicit in the young man's pathology. He's the outsider on the inside; the deeper his infiltration, the more blood he spills and the more unreachable he becomes.Though Tom is shown at various points to be racked with remorse, he's not really someone you can project yourself onto (unless he's meant to be Everyman as No Man). If Minghella intends to demonstrate how, given the right circumstances, any of us could slide into murder with a fairly clean conscience, then he underestimates the way Matt Damon in this film comes across as a vacuum (albeit a seductively robust and personable vacuum). The setting and even some of the themes of the film are distinctly Jamesian, but Tom is like an existential version of the Jackal from The Day of the Jackal; this cipher mutates into whatever puts him out of harm's way. It's this free-floating dread under a hot summer sun, and not the film's cautionary-tale aspects, that takes hold. The actors seem to have been chosen for their ability to reflect the light. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, in particular, look like they were dipped in gold; the emollients of wealth have oiled them to a fine finish. The other performers, including Cate Blanchett as a textile heiress and the always marvelous Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie, Dickie's sneering upper-crust Princeton mate, bring some earth tones into all the blondeness. They seem to operate in a less hazy, more grounded world. It is Freddie who, with his instincts for the deceptions of the lowborn, roots out Tom in the film's most cloak-and-dagger-ish scene. The sequence probably belongs in a more conventional movie, and yet I'm not sorry it's here. We've been asked to identify so closely with the far-gone Tom that the intrusion of Freddie, with his sharp, rational suspicions, is a balm. He's someone we can get behind.Too much should not be made of the cool amorality and character-doubling on display here. Although the film captures better than Purple Noon did the distinctive Highsmith tone of steady-state anxiety, it's essentially a glossy plaything of a thriller -- which is what the Alain Delon film was, too. Minghella brings out the homosexual subtext and erotic ambiguities in the material, and he heightens the class resentments, but make no mistake: The big draw here is the luxuriousness of corruption, and Minghella, for all his pretensions, is enough of a showman to know it.If anybody can create sympathy for the devil, the angelic Matt Damon can.As the title character of "The Talented Mr. Ripley," he plays an ingratiating sociopath who works his way through the American upper crust at play in Italy, leaving behind a bloody but elusive trail. The mystery is not who did it, but whether he will get caught. This thriller is so expertly -- and perversely -- poised that audience members may find themselves secretly rooting for the duplicitous Ripley. The talent is by no means limited to Mr. Ripley. Damon is matched in every slippery turn by a right-on-the-money cast that includes Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman.Director Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") adapts the second screen version of the Patricia Highsmith novel for fresh surprises. Along the way, he exposes the dirty little secret of American democracy: the impenetrable barrier the upper class erects around itself. So the question becomes, is it better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody?Minghella takes a close look at this question over a never-lagging-for-a-moment two hours and 20 minutes. He gives it so many seductive twists across the map of Italy that the upwardly mobile among us, if they're honest with themselves, will opt for the fake.Tom Ripley does, and never looks back. In the chase for the best holiday movie this season, "Ripley" is one step ahead of the rest. The film certainly begins with the slickest main titles, as the many-faceted Mr. Ripley's various attributes flash by, replacing the word "talented." The only thing they leave out is that he is poor and has no intention of staying that way. In Damon's uncanny performance, people think Ripley's "an exceptional young man," and there's no doubt of that. He is first seen accompanying a classicalsinger at the piano, but next he's brushing down gentlemen's clothes for tips. No one has to show him the money. He has an extraordinary nose for sniffing out the rich, even when they are trying to play down their status by traveling under their mother's name so no one will recognize them. The chameleon Ripley takes on the attributes, accents and expressions of the rich in an -- instant. He can do imitations of someone moments after meeting him -- or her. His own look is nondescript, a '50s version of a preoccupied nerd, dorky eyeglasses, downturned smile and all.If things go against him, he can turn on a dime. His other talents: forging signatures and telling bald- faced lies without batting an eyelash. He has a remarkable capacity to shrug off setbacks and just keep moving.A wealthy shipbuilder named Greenleaf puts down his guard and takes Ripley for someone he can trust. He dispatches Tom to Italy to persuade his ne'er-do-well son, Dickie, to come home.As the supercilious Dickie, the tawny Law ("eXistenZ") catches exactly his character's curious balance of attraction and repulsion. The thoroughgoing expatriate at leisure, he indulges his love for boating and jazz at lively waterfront joints. The kiss-on-both-cheeks greeting for men and women alike, Italian style, is second nature to him.Paltrow ("Shakespeare in Love") is Dickie's blue-blood girlfriend, Marge, coollyperceptive but not enough so to see that he's two-timing her. It takes her a while to catch on to Ripley, too.A REPELLENT EXPATRIATEHoffman ("Happiness," "Flawless") plays the loathsome Freddie, a fellow expat. Someone describes him as "the cream of America -- rich and thick." His indolent drawl outdoes even William F. Buckley's. In Hoffman's performance, Freddie is so repellent that it wouldn't be surprising if some of his so-called friends would be happy to see him dead. Freddie is not only loathsome, he's too smart for his own good. He sees through Ripley.Wonderful character actors show up as the Italian police, including a volatile inspector from Rome. An ominous private detective whom the elder Greenleaf hires also appears and does an extraordinary reversal.Ripley's a quick study. As soon as he learns that Dickie is a jazz buff, he gives himself a crash course -- and Damon later sings a tender version of "My Funny Valentine." The effective score includes Miles Davis' "Nature Boy" -- though the lyrics are not sung, jazz fans will recall that they refer to "a strange, enchanting boy," a perfect choice.Ripley must be a good chess player, too, because he sees many moves ahead and lets social butterfly Meredith Logue (Blanchett) mistake him for Dickie. The impersonation will come in useful later -- until it all backfires.Eventually, Ripley will brazenly take over Dickie's identity to the point that hecan register at posh hotels and cash checks in the other man's name.Ripley will even tell the truth when it serves his purposes. He lets Dickie know that he is Dickie's father's paid emissary because he sees that Dickie will get a kick out of stringing Dad along. "I'm the brother you never had," Ripley confides. Each of them, including Marge, is an only child; i.e., self-centered. There are some people who are going to say with some justice that Dickie gets what he deserves.Dickie's attention is like a spotlight: When Law turns it on people, it makes them glow. It works with other women, besides Marge, whom Dickie wants to get into bed and -- who knows -- it begins to look as if it works with men, too. SEEING THE GEARS TURNINGThere are limits, however, to Dickie's attention. He gets bored with Ripley and tells him he has become a leech. Ripley is quick on his feet, and Damon lets you see the gears of the man's mind turning as he feigns innocence and panic starts to slip through. It is an altogether amazing performance.Ripley comes on to whomever he thinks can be useful to him. A gay undercurrent begins as a little frisson and breaks through the surface before this film reaches its conclusion, where Minghella is confident enough to leave something to the viewer's imagination. It will also leave audiences in a state of suspended tension that they haven't felt since "The Sixth Sense."This is the second excellent film based on the Highsmith novel. ReneClement's "Plein Soleil," a French version called "Purple Noon" in English, was released in 1960. More condensed and economical, it came to a different ending and starred Alain Delon as the American Ripley. Believe it or not.。
07级10班戎成丽200740211022 Comment on Film: UnforgivenUnforgiven was only the third western film to land the coveted Oscar for Best Picture. It is also the only one among those three films to deserve the trophy. Clint Eastwood served as producer, director, and star, and had essentially complete control of the project. He set out to depict a deeper, more humble, and fully human “Man with No Name”. He also wanted to demonstrate that the same qualities that made Munny a feared killer were inseparable from his alcoholism and subsequent cruelty. The obvious problem with the story is in its setup. If Munny was such a frequent killer of lawmen, women, and children, how was he able to live an uneventful life as a pig farmer? Surely his saintly late wife wasn't able to convince the law that there was no need for a hanging?Fortunately, other plot elements fall into place. The prostitutes can get away with endless troublemaking, because Little Bill unconsciously wants the …assassins‟ to come. Little Bill despises gunslingers, and seeks to humiliate them and reveal their cowardice. But Little Bill is not a villain, or a sadist. Despite his badge, he is a vigilante at heart. All of his beating victims were armed mercenaries, and certainly guilty under the law.It is said that Unforgiven is really an anti-western, since the story often removes the mythology from western antiheroes. English Bob isn't defending the honor of a lady; he is simply a drunken and jealous murderer. Munny really did murder defenseless innocents in cold blood. The Schofield Kid is just an immature, nearsighted, and insecure young man.But while the characters are revisionist, the same cannot be said for the story. Following a time honored formula; the middle of the film is spent building up the antagonist, to increase the suspense of the inevitable final conflict. English Bob ismade fearsome by his arrogance and his display of pheasant shooting. Little Bill is made fearsome by his complete humiliation of English Bob. Little Bill is built up only so that he can bested by Munny, whose drinking binge has finally led him to fully embrace the Dark Side of the force.Curiously, the audience is compelled to cheer for Eastwood as Munny in the final confrontation. Munny will kill one and all to revenge his friend, even though Ned was in fact a murderer, and his punishment was just by frontier standards. The audience feels uncomfortable about supporting Munny, however, and at seeing him get away unharmed despite his slot trot out of town. We find it hard to believe that he later succeeded as a storekeeper, when it is proven that in his late wife's absence he degenerates into a killer.Unforgiven was a long time in coming. The script was written by David Webb Peoples in 1976. Eventually, the rights were acquired by Clint Eastwood, who waited to film it until he had aged enough to match the lead character.Certainly, Unforgiven was worth the wait: Eastwood won Oscars for both Best Picture and Best Director, and was nominated for Best Actor. Gene Hackman won as Best Supporting Actor and Joel Cox won Best Editing. Peoples were given sole credit as screenwriter, although surely the script had been modified from its original form. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The Oscar that Unforgiven truly deserved was for Best Casting. Clint Eastwood (Munny), Gene Hackman (Little Bill), Morgan Freeman (Ned), and Richard Harris (English Bob) are all magnificent. They also radiate star power, but the same can't be said for the more obscure Jaimz Woolvett (Schofield Kid), Saul Rubinek (pulp writer Beauchamp), and Anna Levine (Delilah, the cut woman.)The important of casting and character is exemplified by the film's weakest scene.A group of deputies discuss Little Bill's carpentry skills and potential cowardice. The scene disappoints because none of the characters in it are memorable, or important to the story.Onscreen, the film is dedicated to Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, the directors and mentors from his successful early career action films. But the dark side of WilliamMunny is closer to the antihero in Eastwood's own High Plains Drifter (1972). As a drunkard and killer, Munny is far closer to pure evil than his counterparts in the Leone trilogy or the Dirty Harry films.07级10班戎成丽200740211022 1. List some examples to show the differences between Accent and Dialect.Accent and dialect(1)Accents are pronounced differently by people from different geographical places, from different social classes, of different ages and different educational backgrounds. Differences of accent are pronunciation differences only. Accent isa characteristic pronunciation, especially:a. One determined by the regional or social background of the speaker.b. One determined by the phonetic habits of the speaker's native language carriedover to his or her use of another language. For example, "pass" is pronounced "pæs" in the US, but "paːs" in the UK.(2)Dialect refers to a variety of a language which is different from others not just inpronunciation but also in such matters as vocabulary, grammar and word-order.Dialect is a regional or social variety of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech differing from the standard literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists: Cockney is a dialect of English.A variety of language that with other varieties constitutes a single language ofwhich no single variety is standard: the dialects of Ancient Greek. For example, people in the US refer to an "elevator", while in the UK it is called a "lift."2. How do you understand the statement that “Phonemes are abstract”?Speech can be divided into segments, and we can find great variety in the way these segments are made. But there is an abstract set of units as the basis of our speech. These units are called phonemes. It is not any particular sound, but rather it is represented or realized by a certain phone in a certain phonetic context. For example, when we pronounce the two words peak and speak, we are aware that the sound [p] ispronounced differently. In the word peak, the [p] sound is pronounced with a strong puff of air stream; butt the same stop sound is pronounced slightly differently in the word speak, the puff of air is withheld a little. The [p] sound in peak is called an aspirated [p], and the [p] sound in speak is an unaspirated[p].3. How do you understand the importance of cardinal vowels in learning sounds?Cardinal vowels a standard reference system and people being trained in phonetics have to learn to make them accurately and recognize them correctly. If you learn the cardinal vowels, you are not learning to make English sounds, but you are learning about the range of vowels tat the human vocal apparatus can make, and also learning a useful way of describing, classifying and comparing vowels. (There are primary cardinal vowels, which are most familiar to the speakers of most of European language and there are other cardinal vowel called secondary cardinal vowels that sound less familiar)4. Do you think the learning this course can benefit English language teaching? Why or not? (At least 200 words for this question) Of course, I do think the learning of this course can benefit English language teaching. In this course, I have learnt a lot of knowledge about linguistics, such as, phonetics, language and culture, and oral English. The most important and useful thing I have learnt is the teaching method of our teacher.By learning this course, I know clearer of some linguistics, I don‟t feel confuse about what are the differences between accent and dialect any more. I know what a phoneme is clearly. The teacher‟s wonderful oral English contribute me to practice my oral English hard. All of these can benefit my English language teaching. I know I must consolidate my English every day, I am ought to practice my oral English and able to pronounce every words correctly. So that can I achieve my teaching goal in the future.I always believe that we teach as we have been taught, from this course, I have been taught the knowledge of English and the good quality a teacher should have. I can‟t forget English learning in the future, I should always keep learning, as knowledge never has ending. Also, from learning this course I know to be a teacher I should become a model of student and have abundant knowledge, just as my teacher did. I think this course will affect my own lifelong education and teaching.。
