14-15学年北师大高二上学期期中测试ⅠClass: Name: Marks: 满分(120)第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)APeople with many different relationships use small talk. The most common types of people to use small talk are those who do not know each other at all. It is also common for people who are only acquaintances (熟人), often called a “friend of a friend”, to use small talk. There are certain “safe” topics that people usually make small talk about. The weather is probably the number one thing. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation. Another topic that is generally “safe” is current events, such as sports news and entertainment news. If there is something that you and the other speaker have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are not acceptable because you cannot be sure who his friends are when you do not know a person well.People make small talk just about anywhere. Most often, small talk happens in places where people are waiting for something. For example, you might chat with another person who is waiting for the bus to arrive. Some social events (such as a party) require small talk among guests who do not know each other very well. The most common time for small talk to happen is the first time you see or meet someone. However, the next time you see each other, you might just smile and say nothing. Do not interrupt two people in order to discuss something unimportant, such as the weather. If someone is reading a book or writing a letter in a waiting room, it is not proper to initiate a conversation either.1. The third paragraph mainly tells us .A. how people make small talkB. people like making small talkC. why people make small talkD. where people make small talk2. What can we learn about small talk according to the text?A. Small talk only happens between strangers.B. When people feel lonely, they will start small talk.C. Unpleasant comments about another person aren‟t a “safe” topic.D. Small talk only happens when people want to make friends.3. The underlined word “initiate” in th e last paragraph probably means “”.A. endB. startC. controlD. avoidBShyness equals (等于) losing opportunities, less pleasure and fewer social connections, but there are ways to make it a thing of the past. When I was fifteen, I was shy. I remember an attractive girl trying to talk with me. My shyness made me focus on me instead of her. I heard my own voice but not hers and I thought about what I was trying to sayinstead of what she was trying to say.To overcome shyness you need to learn to relax. This gives you the space to practice certain conversational skills. Relaxed socializing (社交) is so pleasurable. To start reducing your own shyness, I want you to absorb the following tips and ideas and start to put them into practice.Focus your attention away from yourself. Notice what other people are wearing and make a mental note, listen to their conversation, imagine where they might live, and make a point of remembering names. Not only does this give you more to talk about, it also reduces social anxiety, leaving you feeling calmer.Ask people open questions. Many people like to talk about themselves and will find you interesting if you find them interesting. Ask questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” response such as “What do you like about this place?‟ rather than “Do you like this place?” Once they have answered, you can use add-on (追加) questions connected with the first such as “What other places do you like in this city?” Next you can express your views. This is a great way to get the conversation going. Now I love meeting new people and suspect that my current social confidence would be unrecognizable to my fifteen-year-old self.4. The author didn‟t pay attention to what the girl was saying because.A. her voice was very lowB. he was shy and nervousC. he was attracted by her appearanceD. he wasn‟t interested in her topic5. To get rid of your shyness, you should .A. pay much attention to yourselfB. find a beautiful girl to talk withC. learn to talk to others in a relaxed wayD. ask people some interesting questions6. It can be inferred from the text that .A. people will notice our appearance if we focus on their looksB. shy people will have no friends unless they change themselvesC. shy people may suffer a great deal and may be less happyD. girls like to show off their voices in front of boys7. Which of the following questions will the author probably advise us to ask?A. What a lovely day, isn‟t it?B. Do you like playing basketball?C. Do you think he will pass the exam?D. Why do you find that English is hard to learn?CClaude Monet is surely one of the most famous French artists of all. Monet was particularly interested in the effect of light and would paint the same scene in different lighting conditions or times of the day. For example, he painted around 20 versions of the Rouen Cathedral from dawn to dusk. His most famous paintings include his Water lilies series. The paintings of Paul Cézanne had a lot of influence in the development of 20th century art, including Cubism (立体派) and Fauvism (野兽派). Cézanne is one of the most famous French artists and is known as a “post-impressionist”, which was similar in some ways to impressionism but also broke away from some of its limitations. Famous French paintings include his Bathers and Mont St Victoire series.Henri Matisse was one of the most important famous French artists of the 20th century. He was considered one of the leaders of the Fauvist movement. He had a long and varied(多样化的) artistic career, painting in different styles ranging from Impressionism to Abstract. In 1941, Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and was forced into a wheelchair. But this didn‟t stop him completing the amazing Chapel of the Rosary in Vence.Degas is probably one of the most fascinating of all the famous French artists. He is known as one of the founders of Impressionism, but his paintings were also influenced by classicism, romanticism, and realism. His style is definitely very unique. He was a prolific (多产的) artist, producing over one thousand works. He is best known for his paintings of ballet dancers.8. We can infer from the last paragraph that .A. Degas‟ works all belong to ImpressionismB. Degas‟ works were influenced by many stylesC. it‟s not easy to tell Degas‟ paintings from other artists‟D. Degas‟ paintings influenced classicism, romanticism and realismDQuestion: Which program is in Guinness World Records as the world‟s longest running TV quiz show? These plants produce poisons to keep other plant species from invading (入侵) their areas. This phenomenon (现象) is called allelopathy (植化相克).“Allelopathy is basically a chemical war for plants,” explained Joseph Jez. The plant biologist works at Washington University in St. Louis. “Think of plants as chemical factories,” he said. “Some plants make chemicals to help themselves. Take the sweet smell of a rose for example, the mix of chemicals responsible for that sweet smell helps in reproduction(繁殖). Other plants make chemicals to poison other plants. Walnut, for instance, can make some chemicals called juglone (胡桃醌),which can make other plant species to weaken and die. In fact, people sometimes use juglone as a natural weed killer (除草剂).Jez studies the proteins that control the amount of certain chemicals that plants make. In particular, he studies the shape o f those proteins. It turns out that the proteins’ shape can affect the quantity of protective chemicals that some plants can produce.“Better understanding the shape of these proteins will offer some tips on how they control chemicals. I try to understand nature’s principle and how it makes proteins,” Jez said. “We’re still at the very early stage. But if we can figure that out, we might be able to control it.” Some researchers are studying how to build useful proteins in a test tube. Others are trying to understand how to help plants increase their production of these proteins.36. One of the reasons for plants to produce chemicals is that .A. the chemicals can help them live longerB. the chemicals can help them grow betterC. the chemicals can help them protect their areasD. the chemicals can help them invade others’ areas37. The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refers to .A. certain chemicalsB. the proteinsC. some tipsD. the researchers38. What can we infer from what Jez said?A. He is not optimistic about the research.B. The shape of the proteins is not worth studying.C. He has figured out how proteins are made.D. Their research work still has a long way to go.BMany children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance (零花钱), or pocket money. The purpose of this is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly. The amount of money that parents give to their children differs from family to family. Some children get weekly pocket money. Others get monthly. In any case, parents should make clear what the children are expected to pay for with the money. At first, young children may spend all of their pocket money soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until next time. The object is to show young children that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger items, like clothing or electronic products. Many experts say it is not a good idea to pay your children for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life. Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.Pocket money gives children a chance to experience the things they can do with money. They can spend it in the form of gifts or giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save the money and maybe even invest it. Saving helps children understand that costly goals require sacrifice (牺牲): you have to cut costs and plans for the future.Requiring children to save part of their pocket money can also open the door to future saving and investing. Many banks offer personal finance services to teenagers. A savings account is an excellent way to learn about the power of compound interest (复利).39. What should parents pay attention to when giving their kids pocket money?A. In what way they should give.B. How much they should give.C. When they should give.D. What their kids will use the money for.40. After knowing their kids have spent all the pocket money soon after receiving it, parents should .A. avoid offering their kids pocket money immediatelyB. show their kids the importance of saving moneyC. advise their kids to save all their pocket moneyD. teach their kids how to spend pocket money41. Which of the following is TRUE?A. Allowance helps children learn how to manage money.B. Kids should get money as long as they do housework.C. Parents should give children enough allowance to buy whatever they want.D. Kids should ask their parents’ permission whenever they wa nt to spend their money.42. Which of the following is the best title of the text?A. Giving kids more and more pocket moneyB. Understanding the meaning of pocket moneyC. How an allowance helps children learn about moneyD. Making more money by compound interestCPicky eaters (挑食者) may have good reasons for their behaviors. No matter why your child has become picky, how you handle the situation can affect his or her future. First of all, you must know the following reasons for picky children.Neophobia is common among children; it often shows itself at the dinner table. Some children just refuse to try new food because they don’t know what they will taste like, while others dislike new food before even tasting them. Some kids take it to the extreme and will only eat some food that they like. Psychologist Dr. Capaldi says that, by the time children reach the age of two, they have a food routine (惯例), and they don’t want to be disturbed by new offerings at the table.A newly published study led by Dr. Cooke shows that picky eating in children results from genetic and environmental factors. The research, which followed the eating habits of 5,390 children aged between 8 and 11, found that about 75% of the neophobia in the children was from their parents, while 25% was due to other environmental factors.Children grow at a rapid pace during their first year, and that growth slows down by their second year. Although they continue to develop, fast-paced growth like that in the first year continues to slow down. When a child is not experiencing one of those bursts of growth, their body needs less energy and that translates into a smaller appetite (胃口). When children are not hungry, they tend to only enjoy food that appeal to them. They refuse new food and food that are not their favorites. Some children will limit their intake to one particular food, like hamburgers or pancakes, leaving all other foods untouched.43. The underlined word “neophobia” in Paragraph 2 probably means.A. the fear of the new and unknownB. the fear of eating nutritious foodC. the worry about a lack of new foodD. the feeling of eating at the dinner table44. What can we learn about the study led by Dr. Cooke?A. It followed the eating habits of 5,390 children under the age of 8.B. It focused on environmental influence on children’s eating habits.C. It showed that genetic factor influenced children’s eating h abits more.D. It suggested that parents should have a good eating habit.45. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us that .A. children will grow rapidly as a result of picky eatingB. children develop their own diet when they grow upC. children like eating new food when they grow upD. children’s growth has an effect on their diet46. What is the purpose of the text?A. To describe picky eaters’ bad behaviors.B. To tell parents how to handle picky eaters.C. To show reasons for picky eating among children.D. To tell parents how to correct their children’s picky eating habits.DWhy is the sky dark at night? My daughter asked me this about 10 years ago. We were looking up at the night sky when she asked, “Are there lots of stars up there?” I said, “Yes.” Then she asked, “Are there stars everywhere?” And I said there were. Then she asked, “Well, if there are stars everywhere and all of them are shining, why don’t they fill the sky and make the sky shiny?” In her mind, the sky, instead of being dark, should look like this, brightness everywhere. The key to the paradox (悖论) is, if you look closely at any patch (块) of the sky, you will see shining stars. If you look through a telescope, you will see more. The nearer stars will be brighter, of course, but behind them will be more stars, and behind those, even more. Even if those distant stars are dimmer, there are so many of them; their combined glow should add up to considerable brightness. So why is it so dark at night? Where does the darkness come from? Here’s the answer. It comes from Henry Reich and his team at Minute Physics. The darkness between stars suggests that there are chunks (大块) of deep space where stars are missing. Because they are so far away, light from those stars hasn’t reached us yet.In other words, the darkness tells us something about the size and character of our universe. The universe is enlarging (变大). In a few billion years, those dark patches between stars will grow. There will be fewer stars to see. A few billion years after that, you’ll be standing on a hill looking up on a clear night, and the sky will be close to pitch black, no Milky Way, just blackness, because the stars we see today are speeding away from us, leaving a faint infrared light (红外线). We will be very lonely.47. We can infer that the writer’s daughter .A. had a gift for astronomyB. had a fear of darknessC. was greatly curious about natureD. liked night better than day48. According to Henry Reich and his team, it is dark at night because .A. stars don’t exist in dark patchesB. stars are missing in deep spaceC. stars are not bright enough to seeD. stars are moving too closely to us49. Which of the following is NOT true about the universe in a few billion years?A. There will be fewer stars to see.B. The sky will be close to pitch black at night.C. Humans will feel very lonely.D. Stars will fill the sky and make the sky shiny.50. The purpose of the text is to .A. discover the mystery of physicsB. stress the importance of curiosityC. explain why the sky is dark at nightD. imagine the future of the universeEI have made several appointments to have a GE technician come and check my dishwasher which has been leaking. At the first appointment, technician Robert called me at 3:45 pm to cancel the appointment as he was busy doing another job. This happened on a Friday afternoon. Therefore I had no one to call since the service center had already closed. At the second ap pointment, technician Tim showed up and said it’s the gasket(垫圈) that should contribute to the leaking. And he said that he would get GE to send me new gaskets. At the 3rd appointment, technician Dave showed up to install(安装) the gasket. However, the dishwasher was still leaking. I made a phone call to GE, and they sent technician Dave out again to see what’s up on the same day. Dave took the machine apart and found there were tons of condensation (凝结物), which was causing the leak in the first place. Engineers told him to lower my hot water heater temperature and that should stop the problem. Really, that’s a crock of crap (废话). Of course that didn’t help.At the 5th call today, Technician Tim came back at 4:25 pm and said loose screws had caused the pr oblem. Then, he had the nerve to tell me that’s all he could do and that I should call GE in the morning to deal with it.Seriously, GE behaves like that. How you treat your customers! I’m so angry over GE. I have never experienced such crappy customer ser vice. This dishwasher is not even a year old and it’s the replacement for my old one that was recalled (召回) due to a fire hazard. Now I have to call GE Customer Relations tomorrow morning and start all over again. GE should apologize and pay me for all the hours of work I missed to sit here waiting and waiting for these ignorant repair guys. I threw Tim out of my house for his complete ignorance and bad attitude. I swear I’m going to sue (起诉) GE and expose their poor service on all the blogs I can find.51. The other options do not fit the c ontext: “so” implies a result, “but” suggests a contrast, and “because” gives a reason.3.Choose the correct word to complete the sentence. The cat sat on the_and watched the birds outside.A. chairB. tableAnswer: A. chairExplanation: The sentence describes a cat sitting on a piece of furniture. “Chair” is the most appropriate choice as it is a common piece of furniture where a cat might sit. “Table” is less likely as it is generally too high for a cat to comfortably sit on. “Bed” is also a possib ility, but it is less common for a cat to sit on a human’s bed than on a chair.4.Select the word that best completes the sentence. The teacher asked us to write a story about a__________who wanted to be a doctor.A. boyB. girlC. dogAnswer: C. dogExplanation: The sentence is asking for a subject for a story, and the context suggests a non-human character. Therefore, “dog” is the correct choi ce to complete the sentence.5.Choose the correct word to complete the sentence. The cat was sitting__________the fence, watching the birds.A. onB. underD. besideAnswer: A. onExplanation: The correct preposition to describe the cat sitting on top of the fence is “on.”6.Select the sentence that does not contain a grammatical error.A. Option C is grammatically correct.7、Choose the correct word to complete the sentence. The teacher asked us to read the story, but some of us didn’t understand it because it was too ________.A. difficultB. easyC. interestingD. boringAnswer: A. difficultExplanation: The sentence implies that the students had difficulty understanding the story, which means the story was too hard for them to comprehend. She has a red hat and blue dress.D. She has a red hat, a blue dress.Answer: D. She has a red hat, a blue dress.Explanation: In English, when listing two or more items that are not being described by an adjective, the items are separated by commas. Thus, the correct sentence structure does not include an Oxford comma between “a red hat” and “a blue dress.” Option D correctly follows this rule.9.Choose the word that best completes the sentence. If you want to improve your English, you should__________more English movies.A. watchB. watch oftenC. watch manyD. watch muchAnswer: A. watchExplanation: The correct answer is “watch” because it is the simple formof the verb that is needed in this sentence to suggest a regular action (improving your English by watching English movies). In her grief (悲痛), she went to the holy man (圣人) and asked, “What magical things do you have to bring my son back to life?”Instead of sending her away or saying a few words to comfort her, the holy man said to her, “Bring me a mustard (芥菜) seed from a home that has never known sorrow. We will use it to drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in search of that magical seed. She first came to a beautiful castle, knocked at the door, and said, “I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow. There are two steps you can take to help kids to enjoy reading. Firstly you need to find something they actually want to read. Then, you need to get them to read school books, but this is not the place to start. So how do you choose something for your kids to read? You have to find out what your kids enjoy. It doesn’t matter what you buy, so long as your kids will find it interesting. A book given as a reward (奖励) will often be more enjoyed by kids. If your kids have just done well at something, this is a good time to give them a new book. The second thing you need to consider is where your kids are going to read. I strongly suggest creating a “reading space” in their room and also a time for them to read on their own, ideally just before bed time. There is another way to really speed up your kids’ reading. It is to get them writing. When you set up their “reading space”, be sure to give them a diary and a pen. Just by writing a few sentences each day they will improve their skills. So to successfully get your kids to enjoy reading you need to create them a space in which they read, give them something fun to read, and improve their skills through writing. Before you know it, their abilities will have moved forward and you will be amazed at their progress. Of course, remember all the time to reward good reading with more books.9. Giving them a reading space.DResearchers found that a “name pronunciation effect” played an important role in how people were perceived (感知) by others. They concluded that the easier a person’s name was to say, the better their success was in the workplace and the quicker career advancement (提升) they enjoyed. Their study also found that asimple name improved people’s ability to make new fr iends.Dr. Simon Laham, who led the study, said people with simple names were generally judged more positively (积极地). “The effect is not because of the length of a name or how foreign-sounding or unusual it is, but rather how easy it is to pronounce,” he said.In their study the team studied the way names can influence a person’s impressions and decision making. They looked at lots of names of 500 university student volunteers from British, Asian, and European backgrounds and a field of 500 lawyers in America. The team found that people with more pronounceable names were more likely to achieve success. They found that American lawyers with easier sounding names got career advancement faster within their law firms. Names including Sherman, Jenkins, Benson, and Angus ranked among the easiest to pronounce, while Farquharson and Loughnane and European names such as Leszczynska were found to be difficult to pronounce. They concluded that a simple name was the key to success.Dr. Laham said the results could have important implications (意义) for how managers dealt with bias (偏见). “It’s important to treat the biases that shape our choices and judgments about others,” he said. “It may help remove bias, leading to fairer, more objective treatment of others.”12. What factor of a name plays the key role in deciding its effect?A. The length of the name.B. The pronunciation of the name.C. The meaning of the name.D. Whether the name is unusual or not.13. The underlined part “pronounceable names” in Para. 3 refers to names that .A. can be spelled easilyB. can’t be pronounced easilyC. can be pronounced without difficultyD. sound like foreign names14.
