摘 要随着我国体育文化领域国际交流的快速发展,各种类型的翻译活动和形式也日渐增多。
然而,目前针对体育乃至篮球领域的翻译研究数量还很少,尤其是分析此类翻译特点并提出相应对策的论文还几乎是凤毛麟角。
如果能有效填补此类翻译研究的空白,对于提高此类翻译质量、促进体育领域交流合作将大有禆益。
本文为一篇陪同口译任务实践报告,所描述的口译任务为笔者负责的河北青年男子篮球队的外籍主教练的陪同口译工作,重点选取了教练与球员之间的中英文对话为分析对象,借助跨文化交际适应理论中的四种策略(近似策略、可理解策略、语篇管理策略、人际控制策略),分析总结了相应的翻译策略,希望能够对今后类似的体育培训项目翻译工作的顺利实施以及即将提供一定的借鉴。

Therefore, there is a growing need of talents with both sport knowledge and interpretation skills. However, translation studies of sport or basketball industry are still rare, especially theses which analyze the features and strategies of professional basketball interpretation. The improvement of translation and interpreting quality and the promotion of communication and cooperation in the field of sports raise the need of more studies.As a practice report on escort interpreting (ET), this report describes one ET task conducted by the author for foreign coach of Hebei Youth Basketball Team and analyzes the interpretation of the speech between coach and players. Based on the features of professional basketball interpretation, the report proposed the corresponding interpreting strategies (Approximation, understandable, discourse management and interpersonal control). In the key phase of during interpretation, the interpreting strategies are analyzed and summarized by referring to the strategies in Communication Accommodation Theory. What’s more, the domestic youth training system is gradually complete, and a large number of foreign athletes and coaches poured into China, injecting new vitality into the development of China’s sports. The demand for interpreters in the sports field is also increasing day by day.In recent years, Hebei Province has also increased its investment in sports and developed various sports. For example, basketball in Hebei Province, with a broad mass base and abundant talents, is progressing well. Men’s and women’s basketball teams of Hebei have made outstanding achievements in the National Games and trained a large number of excellent players for China’s National Team. However, in recent years, the basketball training system of the reserve talents in Hebei Province have not changed with time and a series of new problems inevitably arose. In order to promote the basketball in Hebei Province, the Basketball Management Center of Hebei Province Sports Bureau and Hebei Xiang Lan Basketball Club invited American basketball coaches to serve as assistant coaches of Hebei Youth Basketball Team.From August 5, 2018 to September 17, 2018, the author was employed by the Hebei Xiang Lan Basketball Club and served as an escort interpreter for an American coach of Hebei Youth Basketball Team.1.2 Introduction of Xiang Lan Basketball ClubHebei Xiang Lan Basketball Club was founded by Wang Xingjiang on May 6, 2016. The club is representing Hebei province to attend National Basketball League (NBL), which fills the gap of men’s professional basketball in Hebei. At the same time, it will also develop mass sports in Hebei Province.1.3 The Goal of TaskInterpreter services were mainly provided to the coaching team, including consecutive interpreting for the club managers, the Chinese coaches and the foreign coaches, and escort interpreting for the foreign coach, Mr. Jones. The process will be divided into four parts.The first part is the consecutive interpreting of strength training in fitness room.Strength training class is held from 9 to11 am, six days a week. Interpreter was required to provide interpretation services in fitness room for Mr. Z. Jones and players of Hebei Youth Basketball Team.The second part is consecutive interpretation of basketball gym and game. Daily training sessions were from 15:00 to 17:00 at Xiang Lan basketball gym. The interpreter was mainly responsible for English and Chinese communication, following up with the lecturer on the court, and conveying instructions of basketball skills and tactical arrangements to the players immediately during daily practice and U-21 Young Chinese Basketball Association (YCBA).The third part is consecutive interpreting for club managers and Chinese coaches. They held regular meetings after the training session every Monday to discuss the problems in teaching and life. Interpreters were required to participate in the whole meeting and interpret for both parties.The fourth part is the escort interpreting for the foreign coach. The interpreter was responsible for contacting staff and solving problems in Mr. Jones’ daily life, such as commodity replacement, mobile phone card application, train ticket purchase, etc.Chapter II The Framework of CommunicationAccommodation Theory2.1 Related ResearchWith the opening and development of China’s sports economy, the foreign exchange and translation of basketball is also increasing. The researches on basketball translation are mainly divided into two parts: translation strategies of basketball text and the report on professional basketball interpretation.In terms of translation strategies of basketball text, domestic researches are also developing. Among them, Fang Ziyao and Li Ke of Wuhan Business University analyzed basketball terms and summarized the features of basketball translation.There are also few reports on professional basketball interpretation from graduates majored in Master of Translation and Interpreting. Among them, the reports on professional basketball interpretation are divided into interpretation of training camp, interpretation of press conference and interpretation of invitational tournament. Mu Huibing (2014), a student from Harbin University of Science and Technology, participated in the Men’s Basketball Four-country Invitational Tournaments. His report was mainly a summary of his interpretation of a certain event. He pointed out that the difficulties met in basketball interpretation were mainly the lack of professional basketball knowledge, the lack of analytical ability. Yao Yuelun (2019), Chengdu Institute of Physical Education guided by the ecological translation theory and combined with his experience as a interpreter in basketball team. And he elaborated on the features of basketball texts in the ecological environment of basketball translation, and discussed translation strategies with case studies, and analyzed professional basketball interpretation from the perspective of translation ecology. Zhang Nan (2019), from Southwest University of Science and Technology, summarized the translation strategies under the guidance of Skopos theory to provide reference for more interpreters in the basketball interpretation.2.2 Theoretical Background of CATCommunication Accommodation Theory (CAT) was put forward by Giles in 1973. It originates from Speech Accommodation Theory (SAT). It is a combination of Similarity-attraction Theory, Ethnolinguistic Identity Theory and other social psychologytheories. In the beginning, SAT only focused on the speaker’s speech accommodation, such as speed, intonation, pronunciation and other speech accommodation phenomenon. After constant revision and correction, SAT has expanded into CAT and become an interdisciplinary theory, which not only covers the accommodation of verbal and non-verbal communication, but also notes the dynamic process of the interaction of language factors. There are two new trends in CAT. The first trend is that Gudykunst is attempting to combine ELIT (Ethnolinguistic Identity Theory) with the Uncertainty Reduction Theory, and the second one is that N. Coupland has applied SAT to sociolinguistics, especially in register.2.3 Introduction of CATCAT explains the reason why people adjust their speech, pronunciation, intonation, gesture and other factors and describes how individuals adjust their communication in context. There are two functions: first, to establish common ground such that coherent interaction can take place, and second, as member to manage social relationships at the individual or group, and finally achieve social goals in context (Giles et al, 1977).Early CAT, Giles focused primarily on objective speech variables and identified three basic ways in which people can adjust their communicative behaviors relatives to one another: convergence, divergence, and maintenance. This is the core strategy of CAT, called approximation strategies. Most CAT research has focused on these strategies. On the basis of Giles’ theory, Coupland proposed three other communicative accommodation strategies: Understandable strategies, discourse management strategies and interpersonal control strategies (Coupland et al, 1991), as follow:Approximation strategies usually include three parts: convergence, divergence and maintenance. Convergence refers to adjusting one’s communicative behaviors to be more similar to another’s to gain more recognition, promote understanding, and show friendly feeling. Divergence refers to adjusting one’s communicative behaviors to be more dissimilar to another’s. Finally maintenance refers to sustaining one’s “default” level of communicating, without adjusting for others (Giles et al, 1978).Understandable strategies refer to decrease the diversity of vocabulary, simplify syntax, or louder in order to clarity and comprehension (Giles et al, 1990).Discourse management strategies refer to regulate speaking turns and selecting or select conversational topics of mutual interest or concern (Giles et al, 1990).Interpersonal control strategies refer to use interruptions or honorifics to remind the partner who is/are talked to of their relative status or role (Giles et al, 1990).2.4 Perspective of CAT TheoryThere are four parts in CAT theory: socio-historic context, situation and assessment, communicators’ adaptive positioning, and future intentions. These are the key parts of CAT, which play very important roles in the process of intercultural communication. Socio-historic context is the basis of cross-cultural communication, including the policy, historical relations, religions, ideology and so on, so it has a direct impact on thecommunication. In this case, the players in Hebei Young Team and American coach Mr.Jones come from different cultural backgrounds. There exists a great gap in understanding and perception of basketball, which deserves our attention. Communicators’ adaptive positioning is affected by three factors: first, personal factors, such as the speaker’s personality; second, inter-group factors, such as the communicators’ attitude to people outside the group; third, preliminary positioning, such as the perception of potential conflicts. Situation and assessment refer to real communication situations shaped by five related factors: social psychology, goals and what the speech focuses (such as motivation and purpose of interaction), sociolinguistics strategies (such as convergence or divergence), behavior and means (such as theme, accent), attribution. Assessment is aimed at how communicators understand the behavior of their partners. In this paper, a concrete analysis will be carried out in combination with the above theoretical framework in the case study.Chapter III Preparation3.1 Basketball TermsAfter receiving the interpretation project, the author started to read basketball news on Chinese basketball websites such as Hupu and Dong Qiudi every day, began to subscribe to the push service of English sports APP such as BBC Sports and Bleacher Report, and also downloaded BBC, ITV and Sky Sports and other English channels about basketball games to improve basketball terms and tactics.Besides, the author read some books about basketball rules and tactics, such as English For Basketball Officials edited by Yuan Yudong and Official Basketball Rules 2018published by FIBA Central Board, and collected basketball terms and English of sports venues and facilities on the Internet. Interpreters need understand some professional vocabulary in combination with domestic basketball textbooks and regular accumulation, so as to help players understand quickly in the process of interpretation and enhance their trust in interpreters. Basketball terms need to be interpreted standardly and concisely, which are very important for basketball interpreters.3.2 Communication in AdvanceHebei Young Team entrusts Hebei Xiang Lan Basketball Club to send foreign coach to train young players, so the club manager knows the players and the whole team better than anyone. The interpreter firstly talked with the club manager about the job content, working hours and the general condition of the team, and had a basic understanding of the team and this job.And then the interpreter needs to communicate with coach and players. Talking with the coach is to understand the content, structure and ideas of his coaching, and the goal of everyday practice; Talk with students is to understand their physical and mental shape; the other benefit is to have a good understanding of their learning expectations and goals, so as to meet the expectations of both coach and players and achieve the best coaching effect.3.3 Improvised PreparationNo matter how good preparations the interpreter had made before interpreting, unexpected emergencies would occur. At that time, the interpreter should calm down, analyze specific conditions and take countermeasures. Generally speaking, there are thefollowing kinds of emergencies during interpreting, which require interpreter to have better on-the-spot response and deal with them immediately.1) Miss informationDue to the coach’s voice and speed or the environment, the interpreter tends to be distracting for a second and miss some information. If the missing part is the main point, it is better to ask the coach in time to avoid affecting the practice; if this part is not important, it can be blurred or omitted.2) MistranslationThe best interpreters are also bound to make mistakes. Don’t be panic or say “I m sorry, I interpreted incorrectly” when there is an oral error. This will undermine the credibility of the interpreter. In such a case, the interpreter may resort to reinterpreting, repeating or correcting your interpretation.3) The inappropriate speech and behaviors of the speakerDue to the different cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs, cultural conflicts inevitably arise. When the coach’s language or behavior is inappropriate, the interpreter should grasp the two cultural backgrounds to avoid flexibly the misunderstanding and make the practice go smoothly.Chapter IV Interpreting Cases Analysis4.1 Approximation StrategiesApproximation Strategies usually include three basic ways: Convergence, Divergence and Maintenance. Convergence refers to changing a person’s linguistic and non-linguistic behaviors to gain more recognition. Convergence refers to emphasizing the differences between the speaker’s speeches. 篮球运动由于其独特的魅力,吸引着越来越多的球迷,篮球运动在世界各地迅猛发展,在中国举办的各种国际体育赛事也与日俱增,随着外籍教练和球员的参赛,篮球赛事随队翻译工作也应运而生。
但是国内对篮球赛随队翻译的相关资料多为新闻报导,关于篮球赛随队翻译的书籍和总结少之又少,所以对本项目的实践总结,不仅可以为其他随队译员提供参考,还可以丰富国内有关介绍篮球随队翻译的资料。
2013中国鸡西“赛洛城”杯国奥男篮四国挑战赛是黑龙江省鸡西市体育局承办的最高水平国际A级体育赛事,笔者作为此项目翻译组组长,参与并翻译了赛前接待手册,菜单等笔译工作,以及赛中欢迎晚宴、开幕式、闭幕式,和随队陪同口译工作,其中欢迎晚宴、开幕式、闭幕式为汉译英服务,其他时间的随队翻译则是两者兼而有之。
