酸性爵士有三个基本元素：它作为一个极富力度的撞击而存在，起初的风格类似于爵士和非洲古巴舞曲，但是它又固执的游离在funk,hip-hop和舞曲音乐之间。
1998年，最初它出现在作为美国唱片的说明性短语和重新发行的70年代的英语歌收录辑系列的标题中，被Brits称作在80年代中期再现的特别的夹缝音乐。
在80年代中期和90年代初，一些酸性爵士的艺术家们显露出来：出现了一些乐队，如Stereo MCs,Jame Taylor Quartet,the Brand New Heavies,Groove Collective,Galliano和Jamiroquai,以及一些室内音乐设计，象Palm Skin,Productions,Mondo Grosso,Outside 和United Future Organization等等。

其中美国宗教歌曲，西部乡村音乐，黑人音乐中的节奏成份和布鲁斯音调等常融成一体。
早期的摇滚乐多用吉他、钢琴、鼓、萨克斯管等乐器伴奏，音调奋亢喧闹，乐句简单而不断重复，节奏富有强烈的动力感，歌词内容多为学校生活、爱情等。
摇滚乐的种类很多，也没有什么统一的标准，分分类吧。
硬摇滚(Hard Rock)60年代初由布鲁斯发展起来的一种摇滚乐风格，具有比较强烈的吉他失真，吉他比较复杂，主音吉他成分较多，布鲁斯味比较浓。
最早的摇滚乐队如ROLLING STONES，The WHO，BLOOD SWEAT & TEAR 等，以及后来的LED ZEPPELIN，AC/DC，CHEAP TRICK等可以说是硬摇滚乐队。
硬摇滚与重金属通常不太容易区分，不同的人有不同的区分方法。
有人认为70年代以前的叫硬摇滚，70年代以后的叫重金属；有人认为吉他失真小一点的是硬摇滚，吉他失真强一点的是重金属；有人认为头发半长不短的是硬摇滚，长头发的是重金属；还有人认为美国乐队是硬摇滚（美国人把METALLICA叫做硬摇滚乐队），其他国家的就是重金属；我的看法是节奏吉他表现力比较弱的是硬摇滚，节奏吉他的riff表现力强且成为歌曲主导力量的是重金属。
不过也没有必要区分的这么清楚，硬和重，都是我们喜欢的音乐气质啊。
重金属(Heavy Metal)60年代末由布鲁斯和硬摇滚发展起来的一种摇滚乐风格，具有金属质感的吉他失真和反复的吉他riff是重金属最主要的特征，重金属涵盖的范围非常广泛，而且类别繁多，是70年代以来摇滚乐最大的一个分支，也可以说是最正统的摇滚乐。
典型乐队包括BLACK SABBATH（第一支重金属乐队），MOTORHEAD，IRON MAIDEN，SLAYER，BATHORY，DEATH，DARKTHRONE等等。
