作为“表意派”的中国戏曲是按照自己的表演观念来表现人物的诗化情感的。在中国戏曲中，演员通过技术性的外部标志来表现人物的感情冲动。当然，演员在表演这种技术性的外部标志时也会伴随着一定的感情活动，但这种感情活动是在高度的理智控制下进行的。例如，《伐子都》是一部表现男主人公子都内心冲突的戏。副帅子都出于嫉妒主帅颍考叔的心理，用袖箭射死考叔，夺取了帅位。在班师还朝的路上和庆功宴上，颍考叔的鬼魂紧紧缠绕子都，使子都惊恐万状。演员运用了精彩的“虎跳前扑”“鹞子翻身”“窜桌而出”“乌龙绞柱”“小翻抢背”“甩发”“高空云里翻”“平板僵尸”等高难度技巧来表现角色的精神状态。子都的恐惧状态虽然体现在演员的面部表情中，但更突出的表现却是演员的“抢背”“吊毛”“僵尸”等技术手段。

在深切体验规定情境的基础上，演员要精心设计具有观赏性的技术动作，把生活体验与程式表现有机结合起来。这样，戏曲演员才能用程式动作揭示人物的内心感情。这种生活体验基础上的程式表现是“表意派”演剧方法的重要特征。诗化情感的程式表现有两个基本特点：第一，情感表现的假定性。第二，情感表现的技术性。也就是说，戏曲演员的情感表现是假、真、美的辩证统一，是生活情感与技术表现的辩证统一。在表演角色哭泣时，戏曲演员不是写实地摹拟现实生活中真实的哭，而要把哭处理得富有艺术性，具有意象的美感。在表现“哭”时，戏曲演员的面部表情既要悲情外溢(真)又不能让眼泪流出眼眶(假)，“喂呀”的哭声和拭泪的动作还要保持优美的造型(美)。这种生活体验基础上的程式表现就是真、假、美的辩证统一。例如，京剧《狮子楼》中，武松闻知西门庆是主使潘金莲毒死武大的元凶和奸夫，他怒气冲冲赶到狮子楼，决定上楼除奸报仇。为了突出武松愤怒的精神状态，盖叫天既没有采用生活化的上楼动作，也没有采用戏曲舞台上一般的上楼动作，而是用“骑马蹲裆式”侧身上楼，他的双腿先交叉后平移，随着强烈的音乐节奏从下场门一直移动到上场门。演员就是用这种程式动作表现了武松急切报仇的神态，既传情又富有美感。由于舞蹈化的身段和技术化的表情本身具有很强的观赏性，因此，戏曲演员的程式表现就具有了双重戏剧功能：既表现了角色的内心又展示了演员的表演技巧。这样一来，除表现人物的精神生活外，程式还具有了相对独立的审美功能。
