But when a storm dumped up to 3 feet of snow on western Maine, a harsh learning experience turned into a crash course in winter survival. Reported missing from their scheduled meeting place in Gilead at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the eight students and two teachers were not found until 11 a.m. yesterday [Monday], after a pilot spotted the group moving in rugged snow-blanketed area. The discovery followed an unsuccessful ground search by volunteers on snowshoes. After the group was reported missing Sunday, volunteers hiked 3 miles into the woods to look for the students. The five-hour effort turned up nothing and the decision was made to wait until yesterday morning to also canvass the area by air. A Maine Warden Service pilot lifted off and spotted the group close to their intended trail at about11 a.m. Strong airflow prevented him from descending toward the hikers but the group clearly recognized the plane as part of a search team. “They waved at the plane. They laid down, spread out, and waved,” said Mark Latti, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service. “The pilot then guided a search party into their location.” 68.Before yesterday, the three-day weekend hike was supposed to be a _____.A. fun and relaxing excursionB. ridiculous course requirementC. crash course for wilderness survivalD. challenging learning experience 69.The underlined word “canvass” in paragraph 4 probably means _____.A. intrudeB. searchC. harvestD. exploit 70.Which of the following is in the correct order? ( C ) Being less than perfectly well-dressed in a business setting can result in a feeling of great discomfort that may well require treatment to eliminate. And the sad truth is that “clothing mismatches” on the job can ruin the day of the person who is wearing the inappropriate attire(着装)—and the people with whom he or she comes in contact. Offices vary when it comes to dress codes. Some businesses have very high standards for their employees and set strict guidelines for office attire, while others maintain a more relaxed attitude. However, it is always important to remember that no matter what your company’s attitude is regarding what you wear, you are working in a business environment and you should dress properly. Certain items may be more appropriate for evening wear than for a business meeting, just as shorts and a T-shirt are better suited for the beach than for an office environment. Your attire should reflect both your environment and your position. A senior vice president has a different image to maintain than that of a secretary or sales assistant. Like it or not, you will be judged by your personal appearance. This is never more apparent than on “dress-down days”, when what you wear can say more about you than any business suit ever could. In fact, people will pay more attention to what you wear on dress-down days than on “business professional ” days. Thus, when dressing in “business casual” clothes, try to put some good taste into your wardrobe choices, recognize that the “real” definition of business casual is to dress just one notch(等级) down from what you would normally wear of business-professional attire days. Remember, there are borders between your career and our social life. You should dress one way for play and another way when you mean business. Always ask yourself where you are going and how other people will be dressed when you get there. Is the final destination the opera, the beach, or the office? Dress properly and you will discover the truth in the principle that clothes make the man—and the woman. When in doubt, always misjudge on the side of dressing slightly more traditionally than the situation demands. 72. What is the passage mainly about? A. How to dress properly in a business setting. B. A president of a company should dress differently from a secretary or sales assistant. C. The differences between professional and casual dress. D. Improper dress will make a person feel uncomfortable. 73. Which of the following statements is true? A. Every company has strict rules regarding office dress. B. You can wear whatever you like if your company doesn’t have high standards for dressing. C. You should dress according to the business setting even when there are no fixed rules. D. In companies with relaxed rules on office dress, you can’t spot a manager among others. 74. Which statement best describes “dress-down days”? A. On dress-down days, you can wear whatever you like. B. People’s clothes on dress-down days don’t receive much attention. C. We can’t judge a person’s taste by his clothes on dress-down days. D. People are usually more careful about what they wear on dress-down days than on other occasions. 75. Which of the following is NOT the rule offered in the passage with regard to business dress? A. Remember to ask others for advice when you are not sure about what to dress. B. Think about how other guests will wear if you are invited to a dinner. C. For a business meeting and a concert, you should dress differently. D. Dress a bit traditionally if you are not sure about proper dress for a certain occasion. Section C Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. A. The comparison between renewable energy and nuclear energy B. The benefits and risks of using nuclear energy C. The reason for keeping nuclear power D. The panic caused by the leak of radiation E. The main energy source and its problems F. An ideal energy and the proportion it accounts for 76. One of the consequences of the terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan on 11 March was, of course, a leak of radiation at the Fukushima nuclear power station on the country’s east coast. Soon afterwards, all the people living within twenty kilometres of the plant were told to leave because of the danger from the radiation. 77. The pros and cons of nuclear power always come up in debates about how the world should produce the energy it needs. Those who think the risks are too great can obviously use Chernobyl and now Fukushima in their argument, while also pointing out that nuclear waste stays radioactive for hundreds of years, and asking what might happen if terrorists ever chose to attack a nuclear power plant. Those who support nuclear power point out that a very small amount of nuclear fuel can create a huge amount of energy, and that unlike the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, nuclear power stations don’t contribute to global warming by pushing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. 78. Most of the world’s energy currently comes from fossil fuels, but this can’t go on forever. As well as the problem of global warming there is the simple fact that the Earth has a limited amount of these resources. They will eventually run out although there is a lot of disagreement about when that might be. 79. Apart from nuclear power, which currently provides less than 10% of the world’s energy, the other alternative is energy from renewable sources. These include hydropower, biofuels (made mostly from crops), wind power and solar power, and together they currently provide around 15% of the world’s energy. Some scientists think renewable energy is the great hope for the future not only because it won’t run out but also because it is less risky than nuclear power and produces far fewer greenhouse gases than burning fossil fuels. 80. Other scientists, however, believe we will never produce enough renewable energy to fill the gap when fossil fuels begin to run out. That is why, even while watching the very worrying events in Japan, they argue that nuclear power will always have to be part of the solution to the world’s energy problems. Section D Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Frogs, toads and salamanders usually make us think of green, slimy little monsters. These monsters actually belong to a very special class of animals called the amphibians. Amphibians can live both onland and in the water. They commonly inhabit ponds, rivers, marshes and other wetlands. Today, amphibians are becoming extinct very quickly from all the six continents where they are found. More than 25 countries are reporting sharp drops in the populations of amphibians. In some places, embryos (胚胎) are dying; in others, adults are missing. Why are they dying off? Scientists blame human interference. Industrial waste and toxic gases given out by factories, manufacturing plants and cars are steadily poisoning the breeding grounds of amphibians. Chemicals such as sulphur dioxide rise high into the atmosphere and mix with rain. This makes the rain acidic and thus kills off delicate amphibian embryos. More rare species of amphibians are already gone. Costa Rica's Golden toads have not been seen since 1989. The Australian Gastric Brooding frogs are extinct. Leopard frog numbers are dropping in the Rocky Mountains. Leopard frogs live in the wetland regions in these areas. The wetlands are being drained to make way for highways, industry and new housing. Another threat to the amphibians is the increased ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet rays come from the sun and are extremely harmful to living things. They can cause skin cancer in humans. Luckily for us, ultraviolet rays are blocked by a thick layer of ozone above the earth's atmosphere. Ozone is a special kind of oxygen which absorbs ultraviolet radiation. Now, the ozone layer is being destroyed by chemicals called CFC's which are given off by factories. A hole in the ozone layer was discovered over Antarctica in the late 1980’s. As a result, more ultraviolet rays are reaching the earth and more amphibians are dying. Just as the emergence of new infectious diseases such as Bird Flu are a threat to human and animal populations across the world, amphibian species are also facing their most significant threat from a little understood disease. A chytrid fungus is understood to be of the major causes of frog death across the world. (Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS) 81._____________________________________indicate that amphibians are dying out quickly. 82.What’s the destructive force of acid rain? _________________________________________________________________________. 83.The ozone layer protects people by _____________________________________________. 84.List at least two major factors that lead to the extinction of amphibians. _________________________________________________________________________. 第II卷 (共45分) . For years, scientists have worked hard to understand the changes that happen to them. They find that three factors 41 fall's colorful farewell — leaf pigments (色素), length of night, and weather. The timing of the color change is mainly regulated by the increasing length of night. None of the other 42 influences, such as temperature, rainfall, food supply, are as unchanging as the 43 increasing length of night during fall. As days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical 44 in leaves begin to paint the landscape with an explosion of colors. And Nature puts on one of its most splendid 45 of beauty. The timing of the color change 46 by species. Some species in southern forests can become vividly colorful in late summer while all other species are still vigorously green. Oaks put on their colors long after other species have already shed their leaves. These differences in timing among species seem to be genetically 47 . for a particular species, whether on a high mountain or in warmer lowlands, will change color at the same time. However, some species are evergreen. Pines, for example, are green all the year round because they have toughened up. They have developed over the years a needle-like or scale-like foliage (绿叶植物). which is 48 with a heavy wax coating. And the liquid inside their cells contains cold-resistant elements. So the leaves of evergreens can safely withstand (经受住) all but the most 49 winter conditions, such as those in the Arctic.III. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Until recently, the "science of the future" was supposed to be electronics and artificial intelligence. Today it seems more and more likely that the next great breakthroughs in technology will be brought through a combination of those two sciences with organic chemistry and genetic engineering. This combination is the science of biotechnology.Organic chemistry enables us to produce marvelous synthetic materials. However, it is still difficult to manufacture anything that has the property of wool to conserve ($£#) heat and also to absorb moisture. Nothing that we have been able to produce so far comes anywhere near the combination of strength, lightness and flexibility that we find in the bodies of ordinary insects.Nevertheless, scientists in the laboratory have already succeeded in "growing" a material that has many of the characteristics of human skin. The next step may well be "biotech hearts and eyes" which can replace diseased organs in human beings. These will not be rejected by the body, as is the case with organs from humans. The application of biotechnology to energy production seems even more promising. In 1996 the famous science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, many of whose previous predictions have come true, said that we may soon be able to develop remarkably cheap and renewable sources of energy. Some of these power sources will be biological. Clarke and others have warned us repeatedly that sooner or later we will have to give up our dependence on non-renewable power sources. Coal, oil and gas are indeed convenient. However, using them also means creating dangerously high levels of pollution. It will be impossible to meet the growing demand for energy without increasing that pollution to disastrous levels unless we develop power sources that are both cheaper and cleaner. It is tempting to think that biotechnology or some other "science of the future" can solve our problems. Before we surrender to that temptation we should remember nuclear power. Only a few generations ago it seemed to promise limitless, cheap and safe energy. Today those promises lie buried in a concrete grave in a place called Chernobyl, in the Ukraine. Biotechnology is unlikely, however, to break its promises in quite the same or such a dangerous way.65. The materials produced with organic chemistry are at present.A. not as good as natural materialsB. as good as an insect's bodyC. better than natural materialsD. as good as wool s66. According to the passage, it may soon be possible .A. to transplant human organsB. to make something as good as human skinC. to produce drugs without side effectsD. to make artificial hearts and eyes67. In 1996, Arthur C. Clarke predicted that .A. the Chernobyl disaster would happen in two yearsB. oil, gas and coal could be repeatedly used in the futureC. biological power sources would be put into use. soonD. we will never stop using non-renewable power sources68. What do we learn from the last paragraph?A. Biological power will keep all its promises.B. Biological power is cheaper than nuclear power.C. Biotechnology can solve all our future energy problems.D. Biological power may not be as risky as nuclear power.(B)We've all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom or downing cookie after cookie while cramming(死记硬背) for a big test But when done a lot—especially without realizing it—emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being.Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. But understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change itOne of the biggest myths(荒诞的说法) about emotional eating is that it's driven by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they're stressed out lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine's Day or the celebration of a holiday feast.Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. More often, though, it's the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort or distraction in food.Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done. A kid who is given cookies as a way to stop crying may learn to link cookies with comfort. It's not easy to "unlearn" patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what's going on.We're all emotional eaters to some extent (who hasn't suddenly found room for dessert after a filling dinner?). But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain. The trouble with emotional eating (aside from the health issues) is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you did. That's why it helps to know the differences between physical hunger and emotional hunger.Next time you reach for a snack, check in and see which type of hunger is driving it69. People turn to emotional eating because .A. they are preparing for the testB. they enjoy the pleasure of eatingC. they want to seek comfort or distractionD. they feel better after eating70. By saying "We've all been there"(paragraph 1), the author means .A. finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom is badB. we are all emotional eaters to some extentC. our health will be affected by emotional eatingD. people eat more without realizing it71. If you want to break away from the patterns of emotional eating, the first thing you should do is to .A. reduce stress and anxietyB. relax and try to lose weightC. stop seeking comfort from foodD. realize what is happening(C)ASKLASKASYOU'VE GOT QUESTIONS. SHE'S GOT ANSWERS Q: My problem is computer gaming. I do it day and night, averaging four hours of sleep. I can'tcontrol of this, and I don't know where to go for help. Do you? —PlayerA: Dear Player,You have an addiction. For some people playing video games releases dopamine, a powerful brain chemical that makes you feel good. You'd toss your cigarettes if you were ready to quit, right? To kick the habit, get help from a health professional. And don't look for help on line; that would be like an alcoholic going to the bar for advice.Q: My brother's wife just had triplets(三胞胎). This is such a joy! Yet every time I share the news with co-workers, they ask me if she was on fertility pills. I think this is rude—or has society just become so talk-show numbed (麻木的)that you can ask anyone anything? —No Show HostA: Dear Host,Yes. Our society has become increasingly disrespectful of privacy. But don't blame it all on the talk-shows. Continue to celebrate and greet impolite questions with stony silence. Their fertility history is nobody's business but their own. Q: I work at an amusement park, and my manager steals supplies. She has a catering business on the side, and we've seen her load up her van at the back gates. The big bosses think she is the best thing since buttered bread, and we're all afraid that if we say anything, we'll lose our jobs. What can we do? —RighteousA: Dear Righteous,Be sure you're right. You must have evidence about what and why things are going out the back gates. Once you know for certain, it's time to go to the bosses and report what you have seen.Q: My stepson's wife sometimes leaves their eight-year-old home alone for "a short run to the store." That may be an hour or so. I believe by law we should report it. What do you think?—The In-lawsA: Dear Laws,I don't know what the child-protection laws in your state are, but I do know that children need care and attention. This child may be able and unafraid, but kids aren't always careful. It also sounds like there is stress in your family relationship. One thing you can do to help this situation is offer to baby-sit when Mom needs to step out.72. Which of the following statements is true?A. Dopamine is a powerful brain chemical good to our health.B. Looking for help on line is like getting help from a health professional.C. Player is a video game addict who smokes and sleeps few hours.D. Player is advised to stay clear of the screen.73. According to the Q&A, .A. Host's colleagues are insensitiveB. The talk-show is to blameC. Somebody's business is everybody'sD. Host's sister-in-law was on fertility pills74. What we can infer from the Q&A is .A. The Mom is not to blame because she needs a short run to the storeB. Children need care and attention, though not for all of themC. Laws, the old lady, wants to report what she sees to the child's fatherD. Laskas doesn't seem to approve of Laws' trying to report what she sees75. Which Q&A mentioned transport?A. The firstB. The second.C. The third.D. None.Section CDirections: Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from A—F for each paragraph. There isone extra heading which you do not need.76.Environmental groups in the United States are leading a campaign to save thousands of endangered sea turtles. Theyhave asked Pope John Paul the Second to ban turtle meat during the Christian religious observance known as Lent Christians observe Lent in preparation for the holiday of Easter.77. Environmental groups say illegal turtle hunting is one of the major threats to endangered sea turtles in southern California and Mexico. It has been illegal to harvest and eat sea turtle meat in Mexico for more than ten years. However, demand for sea turtle meat is widespread in both Southern California and Mexico. Biologists believe that illegal hunting is one of the main reasons for the sharp drop in sea turtle population during the past thirty years.78. The week before Easter Sunday is an especially deadly time for the turtles. As many as 5000 turtles are killed during this time each year. Many Mexicans and Mexican Americans eat turtle meat during the days before Easter. Many people do not eat meat during this holy time in order to obey the rules of Lent. Because sea turtles swim, many people consider them to be fish. Fish is permitted during Lent.79. The Sea Turtle Conversation Network is a union of fishermen, environmental activists and researchers. They sent a letter to Pope John Paul, urging the Roman Catholic Church leader to officially declare that sea turtle flesh is meat, not fish of seafood. They say thousands of these endangered animals would be saved if people did not eat them during this religious period. The letter also asked members of the Catholic Church to obey laws banning the capture of turtles in Mexico and the United States.80. About 35,000 endangered sea turtles are killed illegally near the coasts of Baja, California each year. Studies have shown a sharp drop in the numbers of females. They travel from as far away as Japan to lay their eggs on local beaches. Environmental activists say hunting sea turtles for their meat is the main barrier to the recovery of the species. They have urged the governments of the United States and Mexico to improve enforcement of the ban on sea turtle harvesting.Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully and answer the questions or complete the statements in no more than 12 words."Severe fatigue(疲乏), very weak. I could hardly walk down the block," says Wendy Moro. Why, she wondered, then, Wendy and her doctor begin to suspect her plate. "A few times a week I was having fish, whether it was once or four times," says Wendy. "What kind of fish? Swordfish, tuna and sea bass, the highest mercury- content fish sold in the commercial market," says Dr. Jane Hightower.Mercury(汞) enters the ocean with commercial pollution. It works its way up the food chain, and apparently intosome of the most popular fish on the market. Wendy's doctor, Dr. Jane Hightower, was so suspicious that she began testing her Bay Area patients. All consumed large amounts offish, and an overwhelming majority tested high for mercury in their systems."I was seeing hair loss, fatigue, muscle ache, headache, feeling just an ill feeling." Hightower said. The symptoms began to clear up when Hightower cut the amount of fish in their diets. "It was so obvious, but the problem was still unknown to the public," she said. "I even wanted to rent a tent and a tambourine."(A tambourine is a small one-sided drum with metal disks around its rim.) Her published findings drew national attention. But despite her study, there is still fierce debate over how much fish is safe to eat, and how much mercury consumers are actually eating. So we decided to do our own test.According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the safe level of mercury intake for a 120-pound woman like Wendy is a little over 38 micrograms per week. On average, a single serving of tuna purchased here in the Bay Area contained more mercury than the EPA recommends a woman of Wendy's size eat for an entire week. Sea bass had nearly twice that level, and swordfish nearly six times the EPA's safe mercury intake for a week, in a single serving. While there is little scientific data on how the body reacts to high levels of mercury, it has been linked to symptoms ranging from muscle pain to hair loss, birth defects, and muscle fatigue And, as in our testing, the evidence is mounting that the larger the fish, the more the exposure.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statement in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. On October 1, for example, the New Y ork group stood across the Brooklyn Bridge to stop people and cars from crossing. The police arrested more than 700 protesters. The protesters spend most of their time in the square, sleeping on airbeds and holding meetings to discuss plans. They eat food that people have given them for free and run their laptops from small generators. The movement has the support of many unions, including the United Federation ofTeachers and the Transport Workers Union Local 100. On October 6, American President Barack Obama voiced his support for the movement. “The American people understand that not everybody has been following the rules, and Wall Street is an example of that,” he said.14. 上海各区2012届高三英语一模试题分类汇编:选标题汇编(宝山)A.Our space is beautiful but dangerous.B.There are different ways to deal with space garbage.C.NASA has come up with new plans for space junk.D.Space garbage sometimes hits spaceships.E.Small objects also lead to dangers in the space.F.Space garbage comes from satellites and rockets.76.Our space is beautiful. Looking out of the window of a space shuttle, you can see the stars more clearly than you can from Earth. It’s thrilling view. However, what’s out there can be dangerous too. And the dangerous things are often too small to see.77.Above Earth, where space shuttles orbit, there are thousands of chunks of space garbage. They are flying as spaceships, at about 17,000 miles per hour. Sometimes they hit spaceships. On one flight of the shuttle Columbia, the ship was hit 106 times. Most of those hits were not caused by rocks. They were caused by pieces of space garbage.78.What kinds of objects are floating in space today? Some are satellites that are no longer working. Others are pieces of rockets that exploded. The first explosion of a rocket in space took place in 1961. Since then, many others have occurred. An exploding rocket can send out hundreds of bits of metal.79.Space garbage also results from everyday even ts. Let’s say an astronaut walks outside a shuttle, taking pictures. What if he drops the camera lens cap? It becomes a piece of orbiting junk. A flying bolt may not sound like much. If it’s flying ten times as fast as a bullet, though, it can be pretty sc ary. Some space trash burns up by falling toward Earth. If it’s high up in space, though, it won’t fall to Earth. It will stay in orbit.80.What can be done about space trash? This may be one of the most important questions now facing NASA. One answer is to keep track of it. Radar can track a piece of space junk as small as a softball. Before launching a flight, NASA makes sure no other ships or satellites will be in the way. They could also make sure no large pieces of space junk were in the flight’s p ath. But whatabout smaller things? What about a piece of metal as small as a pebble? One solution is to invent armor for spaceships. Another is to leave less garbage up there.76—80 ADFEB(崇明)76.Home is a place where one feels safe and secure but unfortunately, it is also the place where you may have serious accidents. The biggest single cause of accidents is human error! So you must take care of yourself!77.The design of houses can cause accidents. Balconies, fireplaces, staircases, ponds, glass doors or open-plan kitchens can all increase the risk of accidents. Hot water, household chemicals, fireplaces, matches, alcohol and sharp objects are also potential dangers. Loosing balance, clumsiness and being tired or careless can be the reasons for these accidents. What’s more, if you are under stress or when a routine is changed, you may also be under the risk of home accidents.78.You can see many dangerous home accidents happening around you. The most common ones are slips, falls and collisions. They are not fatal but often result in broken bones. The second most common types of accidents are burns, swallowed objects or breathed in chemicals. They especially affect children and need hospital attendance. Some other possible dangers at home are poisoning, choking, drowning, electric shocks, and animal bites. Some of these accidents may even result in death.79.Sometimes the simplest precaution protects you from the greatest harm! Therefore, it is important that we should educate people. The Ministry of Health can train professionals to educate nursing staff, ordinary people, voluntary workers, teachers, nursery staff and parents in home accident prevention and control. When people know first aid, they can reduce the risk of serious injuries.80.You must take measures to make your home a safer place. For instance, keep knives and other sharp objects in a safe drawer. Wipe up any liquids on the floor immediately in order not to slip or fall. Keep hot objects away from the reach of children. You also mustn’t leave children unattended near a bath that has water in it. If you keep furniture away from windows, you may prevent possible harm. Store all medicines, household chemicals, and so on, preferably in a locked box and do not forget to keep all dangerous substances in their original containers. In brief, if you want to protect yourself, be careful not to be sorry!76. F 77. D 78. A 79. E 80. B(奉贤)76.Last Tuesday, I came home from school hot, tired, and starving. I had been through a very tiring day, and all I wanted to do was eat. I opened the refrigerator door and searched for something eatable. Luckily, I chanced to find a piece of leftover pizza from the night before. I put it onto a plate and popped it into my microwave oven. Presto! In less than two minutes, my pizza slice was ready for me to bite into. This modern-day invention, the microwave oven, should be considered one of the “wonders of the world ”because it is unbeatable as a food, money, and time saver.77.As a food saver, a microwave oven is definitely hard to beat. Almost any kind of leftover can be reheated in this type of oven, and used properly there is no worry of the food drying out. For example, spaghetti is a mess to try to reheat on top of the stove. It dries out terribly and will stick to the bottom and sides of a saucepan. The spaghetti will also scorch(烧焦) easily if one is not careful. But with a microwave oven, this is a different story with a happier ending. The spaghetti will remain saucy, will not stick, and will not scorch. The Italian food will be as good as it was the78.Another “wonder ”about the microwave oven is the money that it saves. Leftovers that would normally be thrown out can be saved and reheated. This saves food; thus, it saves money.79.Best of all, however, is the time that a microwave oven can save. As a general rule, microwave cooking takes one-third the time that a conventional oven does. Imagine what a delight this would be after a tiring day at work, school, or, better yet, shopping! For instance, to bake a medium-sized potato takes only eight to ten minutes in a microwave oven. So in the timeit would take to fry up a hamburger, one could have a hot baked potato to go with it. In addition to speedy cooking, a microwave is wonderful for defrosting (解冻) meat. On low power this oven can defrost any kind of meat in less than fifteen minutes. This is a real lifesaver when company80.Indeed, microwave ovens should be considered one of the modern wonders of the world. I know that it was a wonder for me last Tuesday. That slice of day-old pizza made me feel like a new man!76—80 ACEFBFive Happiness Secrets For Tough TimesSonja Lyubomirsky, an author, has researched the science of happiness for years. Times are tough, I’ve been furloughed at work, but I can spend more time with the kids, adopt a new hobby, or learn a new set of skills.”77. ________________Now more than ever we need each other to survive. Lyubomirsky found that doing good things for friends, family, or strangers can make you happier. Think of practical, everyday gestures that can make someone’s life a little bit easier. For example, Lyubomirsky says, “Maybe now many of us can’t afford to take a cab to the airport, so offer to give a friend a ride.”78. ________________You don’t need an expert to tell you that relationships are critical to happiness. Not being the bread-winner anymore or not being able to fulfill your kid’s needs can weigh down hard on your family life. But the trick is to stop feeling guilty and focus on caring for your loved ones.“I was at a psychology conference where an expert was talking about the effects of this economy on families and how parents can’t afford to buy their kids luxuries like toys anymore,” says Lyubomirsky. “But what they don’t realize is that kids don’t care about toys — what they care about is parents being grumpy and taking it out on them.”79. ________________“If you find a happy person you will find a project,” says Lyubomirsky. “Happy people all have goals they care about.”Commit yourself to a project – whether it is a business you want to start or a dance you want to learn. But it’s also important to remember to be flexible in these times. Don’t get frustrated if circumstances are stopping you from meeting your goals. Adopt and change!“If your spouse has lost their job you might have to change your goal,” says Lyubomirsky. “Or you might have to learn a whole new skill for a new job.”80. ________________When times are tough, it’s easy to skip your regular workouts in favor of mop ping in front of the TV and eating a bag of chips. Your thinking is “I have more important things to worry about right now than looking good.”But carve out a small part of your day to give your body some TLC (Tender Loving Care). It will go a long way in boosting your happiness. “Even if you can’t afford to go to the gym,” Lyubomirsky says, “take time out to exercise at home.”76-80: DFAEC(黄浦)Time Machine76.You cannot change the laws of physics, but could physics actually enable us to travel through time? It might sound crazy, but according to Einstein’s theories, there’s no logical reason why time travel isn’t possible and there are now scientists looking into it as a serious scientific proposal, at least at a theoretical level.77.Put simply,Einstein ’sidea wasthat every object in the universe has its own “time ”, and these vary as objects move. The faster an object moves, the slower its time is, compared to the time of a slower moving object. The extreme situation would be if an object could move as fast as the speed of light, its time would be completely stopped. But whatever an object ’ --- or person ’s --- time is, it ’s only evident in contrast to other objects. In other words, they ’re all relative. 78. In 1971, after Einstein ’s death, two scientists were able to carry out a crucial experiment. They used two atomic clocks, synchronized them and placed one on a plane, while the other stayed in the same location on Earth. The plane then flew around the world for 80 hours. According to Einstein ’s theory, the clock on the plane would be expected to have lost time, due to being in motion over 80 hours compared to the clock on the ground. When they brought the clocks together and made a comparison, the clock on the plane was indeed a few nanoseconds slower than the other clock.79. So, time is warped --- and this opens up the possibility that we might be able to somehow manipulate it as a mode of travel one day. Already one scientist has published a paper in which he detailed how to build a time machine.80. If it were possible, however, it would present some pretty knotty paradoxes. For example, what if someone or something traveled back in time and changed the future? And have you heard the one about the time traveler who dots back and forward in time and by means of various medical technologies is able to be his own father AND mother?! And besides, if time travel is possible, where are all the people from the future----surely they ’d want to come and meet us poor stranded 21st century beings?76-80 BFCDE(嘉定)Robot, it is a word that seems very modern, a word that creates a strong mental picture, a picture of something that looks and acts like a human. Robots are not human, of course, they areThe word robot, and robots themselves, are less than 100 years old. But humans have been dreaming of real and imaginary copies of themselves for thousands of years. Early people madeWhat is the future of robots? The goal of scientists is to create a true human-like robot. Some experts have described this robot of the future as one that can act independently with the physical world through its own senses and actions. Humans have the ability to see, hear, speak and solve problems. Engineers have built robots that have one or two of these abilities. But itThe biggest problem in creating a human-like robot is copying human intelligence. The way the human mind works is almost impossible to copy. A simple computer can do mathematical problems far beyond the ability of even the smartest human mind. But the human mind is better than a thousand supercomputers at speaking, hearing and problem-solving. Several American and Japanese companies are working to develop the senses of sight and touch for robots. TheHowever, the most important human ability--the most difficult to copy--is problem-solving. An intelligent robot must be able to change the way it acts when it faces an unexpected situation. Humans do it all the time. Computers must do it for robots. This means computers must have a huge base of information about many things. They must be able to find quickly the needed information in their systems. And they must make choices about how to act. So far, this is beyond the ability of computers.76.D 77.F 78.A 79.E 80. While more Americans are getting married today than ever before, the divorce rate is also disturbingly on the rise (one divorce for every three marriages last year). Why should this be so, and what, ifanything, can we do to reverse this trend?77. For most people, life is easier and more comfortable than ever before. Convenience foods from the supermarket simplify shopping and cooking. Household appliances like the vacuum cleaner and the washing machine have made housework much easier to do. Released from these household chores, many wives have found jobs outside the home. Women are achieving economic independence.78. Families, too, are simpler today. In America, it is not customary for parents to live with their married children. With our greater mobility, relatives have scattered, the parents retiring to Florida or Arizona and the young people, after they marry, going wherever their jobs or their interests take them.79. Young adult women have new freedom, too. While attending college, they often live away from home, sometimes far from their parents or their relatives. After college, they move to the city, find a job, and set up “bachelor ” apartment. This is the era of women ’s liberation.80. But all this freedom and affluence had had an unforeseen and in some respects a devastating effect on marriage. Men and women, no longer dependent on each other for food and maintenance, find it harder to accept the responsibilities and restraints or endurance the misunderstandings of married life. When happiness becomes misery, many couples decide too terminate their marriage through divorce. On the other hand, there is a growing trend today for couples in trouble to try to save their marriage by consulting a professional counselor. He listens patiently while they talk, knowing that only through self-understanding can they solve their problems.76 – 80 FBDEA(静安)A. New teachers' opinions of involving parentsB. An argument over an assignmentC. A conflict between assumption and realityD. Difficulties in sharing goalsE. The best way to score highF. Proper ways of parental involvement76. An Iowa high school counselor gets a call from a parent protesting the "C" her child received on an assignment 'The parent argued every point in the essay, "recalls the counselor, who soon realized why the mother was so disappointed about my grade, 'it became apparent that she'd written it."77.In a survey, 90% of new teachers agreed that involving parents in their children's education isa priorityat their school, butonly 25% described their experience working with parents as "very satisfying." When asked to choose me biggest challenge they face, 31 % of them quoted involving parents and communicating with them as their top choice. 73 % of new teachers said too many parents treat schools and teachers as enemies.78. At a time when competition is rising and resources are limited, when battles over testing force schools to adjust their priorities, when cell phones and e-mail speed up the information flow and all kinds of private ghosts and public quarrels slip into the parent-teacher conference, it's harder for both sides to step back and breathe deeply and look at the goals they share. 79. Everyone says the parent-teacher conference should be pleasant, civilized, a kind of dialogue where parents and teachers build partnership. But what most teachers feel, and certainly what all parents feel, is anxiety and panic:80. When a teacher asks parents to be partners, he or she doesn't necessarily mean Mom or Dad should be camping in the classroom. Research shows that though students benefit modestly from having parents involved at school, what happens at home matters much more. According to research based on the National Education Longitudinal Study, a sample of nearly 25,000 eighth graders, among four main areas of parental involvement(home discussion, home supervision. school communication, and school participation), home discussion was the most strongly related. 76—80 BADCF(卢湾)There are many ways to help you improve your memory.76.Most people memorize information best when they study in short periods over a long period of time. Memorizing facts from index cards that can be carried with you and pulled out for a few ten-minute sessions each day will yield better results than sitting down with a text book foran hour straight. Index card notes can be pulled out in odd moments: while you are sitting in the car waiting to pick up your friend, during the 15 minutes you spend on the bus in the morning, while you wait to be picked up from school or work, and so on. You’ll find these short but regular practices will greatly aid your recall of lots of information. They’re a great way to add more study time to your schedule.77.When you have a list to memorize, divide the list into groups of seven or any other number. People seem to remember best when they divide long lists into shorter ones—and, for some reasons, shorter ones that have an odd number of items. So instead of trying to memorize ten vocabulary or spelling words, split your list into smaller lists of seven and three, or five and five, to help you remember them.78.Give yourself visual assistance in memorizing. If there’s a tricky combination of letters in a word you need to spell, for example, circle or underline it in red or highlight it in the text. Your eye will recall what the word looks like. With some information, you can even draw a map or picture to help you remember.79.Give yourself auditory assistance in memorizing. Many people learn best if they hear the information. Sit by yourself in a quiet room and say aloud what you need to learn. Or give your notes to someone else and let that person ask you or quiz you on the material.80.When you study right before going to bed and don’t allow any interference—such as conversation, radio, television, or music—to come between study and sleep, you remember material better. This is especially true if you review first thing after waking as well. A rested and relaxed brain seems to hang on to information better than a tired and stressed-out brain.76. E 77. A 78. D 79. But exercise is a powerful tool for dealing with depression. In fact, studies show that regular exercise can be as effective as antidepressant medication at increasing energy levels and decreasing feelings of fatigue. Scientists haven’t figured out exactly why exercise is such a potent antidepressant, but evidence suggests that physical activity triggers new cell growth in the brain, increases mood-enhancing neurotransmitters and endorphins, reduces stress, and relieves muscle tension —80.If you find your depression getting worse and worse, seek professional help. They have asked Pope John Paul the Second to ban turtle meat during the Christian religious observance known as Lent Christians observe Lent in preparation for theholiday of Easter.77.Environmental groups say illegal turtle hunting is oneof the major threats to endangered sea turtles insouthern Californiaand Mexico. They have urged the governments of the United States and Mexico to improve enforcement of the ban on sea turtle harvesting.76-80. CADFE(普陀)76.The cultivation of a hobby and new forms of interest is therefore a policy of the first importance to a public man. But this is not a business that can be undertaken in a day or swiftly improvised by a mere command of the will. The growth of alternative mental interests is a long process. The seeds must by carefully chosen; they must fall on good ground; they must be sedulously tended, if the vivifying fruits are to be at hand when needed.77.To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say: 'I will take an interest in this or that.' Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet get hardly any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death.78.It is no use offering the manual laborer, tiered out with a hard work week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.79.As for the people who can command everything they want, who can gratify every caprice and lay their hands on almost every object of desire -- for them a new pleasure, a new excitement if only an additional satiation. In vain they rush frantically round from place to place, trying to escape from avenging boredom by mere clatter and motion. For them discipline in one form or another is the most hopeful path.80.First, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays, when they come, are grudged as enforced as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation. Yet to both classes, the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential.Indeed, it may well be that those work is their pleasure are those who and most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.选标题:76-80 BCDEF(青浦)5 Golden Lessons from Steve JobsA. 2012届上海市高三一模英语试卷——简答题宝山Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Aware that the financial crisis could spread to other sections, the Fed has moved remarkably aggressively, cutting rates by 1.25 percentage points in eight days—a rate-cutting spree(无节制行为) almost unheard of in central banking history. The Fed now has cut rates five times by accumulative(累积的) 2.25 percentage points—and there is no sign that the Fed is done. Thanks to the strategies of Hank Paulson, George Bush soon will sign a bill that will pump some $150 billion into the American economy for U.S. consumers to spend. That kind of coordination(协调) between fiscal and monetary authorities is as exceptional as it is both swift and impressive.Sure, the Cassandras are disobeying the Fed‘s actions. Bernanke has been criticized for everything from catering to Wall Street traders to still being behind the curve. But opinions are like a nose—everybody has one. The current noise of criticism against Bernanke is a lot like baseball fans, screaming ―throw the burn out‖ at the game or letting out their depressions on post-game AM radio talk shows. But it‘s a lot easier to criticize than to step up to home plate an d swing the bat.The reality is that few of Bernanke‘s most bitter critics were even smart enough to make it into an introductory economics class taught by Bernanke at Princeton—let alone to run the world‘s most influential Central Bank. And to assume that Fed policy is based on responses to such criticism would be as ridiculous as for baseball star Alex Rodriguez to walk over and hand his bat to an unpleasant critic in the seats of Yankee Stadium to take his place at home plate. Thankfully, airline pilots guiding a plane through rough instability play to a less noisy crowd. Here‘s the reality. Neither Bernanke‘s interest rate cuts nor the federal stimulus package likely will hit the policy nail right on the head. But no real-time decision making is perfect. As John Maynard sKeynes, himself an academic with plenty of real world experience, observed: ―It‘s better to be nearly right than exactly wrong.‖ The Fed can‘t stop a decline, but it can help it be short and shallow. This is a complex, fast-changing sit uation. Let‘s give the Fed and the U.S. government some credit for acting swiftly and firmly.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS) 81.The Fed has cut its rates steeply in central banking history because it has recognized that__________________________________________________________________________.82.With the help of Hank Paulson, George Bush agrees to give money to U.S. consumers tospend, which shows that the cooperation is unusually __________________________.83.The author‘s opinion about Bernanke‘s most rough critics is that they are ______ to run theworld‘s most influential Central Bank.84.Since the situation is complex and fast-changing, what does the author approve?81. the financial crisis could influence other parts82. swift and impressive83. not smart enough84. trusting and suppor ting the Fed and the U.S. government.崇明Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. What if your son or daughter had no hope of ever having a normal life due to a life-threatening condition? Do these terminally sick people have the right to die?In the UK, the question of assisted suicide or refusing medical treatment is extremely divisive(有分歧的); euthanasia is illegal in Britain, which is the act of helping a terminally-ill person to kill himself. However, a 13-year-old English girl has won the right to refuse medical treatment this week after a hospital dropped a legal attempt to force her to have a heart transplant. Hannah Jones, who has spent eight years in and out of hospital battling heart problems, told child protection officers she wanted to die with dignity rather than face the operation and have to take constant medical treatment afterwards. Despite initial efforts by her local health authority to remove Hannah from her family and force her to undergo the transplant, legal and medical experts said that a child of her age was able to make an informed decision to refuse treatment.Hannah‘s decision to stop treatment and spend the rest of her life at hom e with her family was made entirely by herself, according to her father, who spoke of his admiration for her. "Hannah made that decision consciously on her own, a bit like a grown-up, even though she was only 12 at the time, and she has maintained that decision," said Andrew Jones. The headmaster of Hannah‘s school described her as intelligent and capable of making her own decisions. "Her presence is a source of inspiration to us all through the courage and dignity that she displays," he said.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. What is ―euthanasia‖ (in paragraph 2)?82. The hospital‘s original plan for Hannah was to _____________________________________.83. The Framingham Study gathers information about physical and mental health, personal behavior and diet. At first, the study involved about 5,000 people in the American state of Massachusetts. Now, more than 12,000 individuals are taking part.Information from the Framingham Study showed earlier that happiness can spread from person to person. So can behaviors like littering and the ability to stop smoking.University of Chicago psychologist John Cacioppo led the recent study. He and other researchers attempted to show how often people felt lonely. They found that the feeling of loneliness spread through social groups.Having a social connection with a lonely person increased the chances that another individual would feel lonely. In fact, a friend of a lonely person was 52% more likely to develop feelings of loneliness. A friend of that person was 25% more likely. The researchers say this shows that a person could indirectly be affected by someone‘s loneliness. The effect was strongest among friends. Neighbors were the second most affected group. The effect was weaker on husbands and wives, and brothers and sisters. The researchers also found that loneliness spread more easily among women than men.The New York Times newspaper reports that, on average, people experience feelings of loneliness about 48 days a year. It also finds that every additional friend can decrease loneliness by about five percent, or two and a half fewer lonely days.Loneliness has been linked to health problems like depression and sleeping difficulties. The researchers believe that knowing the causes of loneliness could help in reducing it.The study suggests that people can take steps to stop the spread of loneliness. They can do this by helping individuals they know who may be experiencing loneliness. The result can be helpful to the whole social group.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. What personal behaviors can spread from person to person like loneliness and happinessaccording to the Framingham Study?82. Behaviors like littering and the ability to stop smoking can (spread).82. Friends were the most affected by loneliness. / Friends were affected most by loneliness.83. make more friends. / make as many friends as possible / you can.84. health problems like depression and sleeping difficulties嘉定Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success only if you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial (长期的) victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence. If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks. In short, in all areas of your life, whether they be financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.(Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 12 WORDS)81. The fifth volume of an enormous work re-assessing the Chinese contribution to science and technology is to be published next year. The first volume, which was published twenty years ago, set the tone for the whole work. In it, evidence was given to show that many inventions which, until then, western historians had claimed for Europe, were made first in China. The attempt to rewrite the intellectual history of the world was not received without protest by some respectable historians. However, the evidence that has been presented so far in the first four volumes has persuaded many historians who were doubtful at first. China‘s invention of paper, printing, the magnetic compass and gunpowder has never been quarrelled, but this new history has added advanced bridge design, mechanical clocks, paddle boats and many other inventions to the list.In the four volumes published so far no attempt has been made to explain why China has not kept up with the West in science and technology in modern times. It is probable that the answer is to be found in the social and economic history of China, where an unchanged society under a relatively kind regime(政治制度)of upper classes contrasts with the potentially revolutionary and energetic society of the West at the end of the Middle Ages. In recent years, the Chinese government has been making every effort to catch up with the West again, and there is little doubt that the gap is being reduced year by year. But will China avoid the West‘s mistakes?(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)81. The computing machines are here, and they will not merely stay, they will grow smarter, faster, and more useful every year. They will continue growing because engineers want tobuild them, scientists want to use them, industrialists want to employ them, scientists want to enlist them in new weapons systems, politicians want their help in the processes of government. In short, they will flourish(兴旺)because they enable us to finish tasks that could never before have been undertaken, no matter how many unskilled laborers we might have set to work. Computers will continue to improve our intelligence for the same reason that engines continue to strengthen our muscles. The question we must ask is not whether we shall have computers or not, but rather, since we are going to have them, how can we make the most intelligent use of them?Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong.Questioning and routine double-checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the warning: For all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. How will the computing machines change every year?82. Why will the computing machines keep growing?83. The question we must ask mentioned in Para. 1 is _____________.84. Oxford and Cambridge are universities each having about 12,000 students out of a total of over 250,000 students at all British universities. Eton is a public school, and the best known of the public schools, which, in spite of their name, are not really public at all, but independent and private secondary schools taking boys from the age of thirteen to eighteen years. The public schools in reality form a very small part of the whole system of secondary education; only about one out of forty English boys go to a public school, and one out of 1,500 goes to Eton.Apart from the so-called public schools there is a complete system of state primary and secondary education, which resembles in its general form the state education in most other countries. All children must, by law, receive full-time education between the ages of five and sixteen. Any child may attend, without paying fees, a school provided by the public authorities, and the great majority attend such schools. They may continue, still without paying fees, until they are eighteen. In presenting an overall picture of English education it would be reasonable to concentrate on the state system alone and refer briefly to the public schools. However, although the public schools are not important numerically, they have been England‘s most peculiar and characteristic contribution to educational methods, and they have an immense influence on the whole of English educational practice and on the English social structure. For a hundred years most men in leading positions in banking, insurance, high finance, some industries, the army, the church and conservative politics have been educated at public schools.(Note: Answer the question or complete the statements in no more than 12 words.)81. He hardly ever wears a necktie. ―I‘m working harder than ever,‖ David says, ―and I need to feel comf ortable.‖More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only onFriday). This became known as ―dress-down Friday‖ of ―casual Friday‖. ―What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really become an everyday thing. ‖ said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it‘s easier for a company to attract new emplo yees if it has a casual dress code. ―A lot of young people don‘t want to dress up for work,‖ says the owner of a software company, ―so it‘s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.‖ Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productivity. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. ―Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,‖ one person said. ―For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.‖81. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. It‘s all too much.Psychologists in Britain have said that the last full week of January is the most depressing time of a year, and labelled next Monday ‗Blue Monday‘. Blue is a slang way of saying unhappy.Mondays are generally seen as the worst day of the week because people feel bad-tempered and tired at having to go back to work after a weekend with a different sleep pattern. There are various reasons why more people feel depressed at this time of year. Many people have unpaid credit card bills for the Christmas presents they bought, and pay day is often not until the end of the month. As the party season is over, people feel stressed because they have to go back to real life –work and commuting(乘公交车上下班); and they may be unhappy with their body image after bingeing(大吃大喝)on alcohol, chocolates, and other food at Christmas-time.People may have already failed in their New Year‘s resolutions, such as giving up smoking. The bad weather in January can also contribute to people feeling fed up.Some companies are taking this quite seriously and offering professional advice for any staff who are feeling depressed. They hope that helping people as soon as there are signs of depression will avoid their absence from work. Evidence shows that unreasonable managers who contribute to their staff feeling fed up at this time can expect an uncooperative workforce. However, it‘s not al l bad! Many people feel optimistic at this time, that things can only get better. Psychologists offer suggestions of how to fight against feeling blue. These include spending 15 minutes doing a ―gratitude exercise‖ thinking about and writing down what you are grateful for, such as health, family, friends and so on.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81.According to psychologists in Britain, what is the most depressing time of a year?82.What economic factor may give rise to people‘s depression at that time of the year?83.To ensure that the employees come back to work after the long holiday, many companies_____________.84.Psychologists believe that a 15-minute ―gratitude exercise‖ may help _____________.81.the last full week of January82.People have to pay their credit card bills by then.83.offer professional advice for any staff who are feeling depressed84.fight against feeling blue。

Supporters say that makes the road safer for everyone, including pedestrians, by slowing down cars and taking bikes off the sidewalk. But some longtime residents disagree. Lois Carswell ispresident of a group called Seniors for Safety. She says the two-way bike lane is dangerous to older residents who are used to one-way traffic.Lois: We wanted a lane — the right kind of lane that would keep everybody safe, that would keep the bikers safe. But the host of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, currently taking place in Durban, is under increasing pressure to reduce its dependence on coal. From South Africa to America, Europe to China, coal is the bedrock on which most world economies have been built. Reducing its use, many countries argue, will reduce productivity and growth. Even though the government is talking nicely about climate change we are not seeing the action.Developed countries have promised to contribute $100 billion towards a Green Climate Fund to finance developing nations to reduce their carbon release. But many fear these funds may never become reality.Complicating matters even more is the argu ment around whether all the world’s developing countries should be entitled to the fund.In the meantime, with more power stations either being built or planned, South Africa’s coal mining industry is likely to continue to grow. Europe has been South A frica’s main coal export market, but orders from India and China have rapidly grown in recent years. Still, it is domestic demand that drives the industry: Over 90% of South Africa’s electricity is generated from coal.“This country has been mining coal since the 1860,”said Melita Steele of Greenpeace. “It has formed the backbone of the economy and it’s what Eskom knows. Less than 1% of this country’s energy is green which is a sorry tale.”Several targets to create electricity from waste are already underway.
