summary
Shadow play is a traditional folk art . According to historical records, the shadow began in the Warring States period, flourished in the Han Dynasty, climbed to the top in the Song Dynasty, spreaded to the West Asia and Europe in the Yuan Dynasty .
Expression form
The artists manipulates the characters and sing with local popular tunes of the story (sometimes in dialot)behind the screen.there are strong local features. In the past, without film and television, shadow play is very popular among people.
Evenworse,many shadow play groups have been disbanded,the most of talent artists have died.
• In order to protect this art,both Chinese artists and the Government are making great efforts to conserve and protect this ancient art form.

Secondly, shadow play is a variety of folk arts, so local shadow play reflects local characteristics. At the same time, the local characteristics make it more charming.
Shadow Play
Shadow play consists of the silhouettes(人 物剪影) of people which is made by animals’ skins as well as card-boards and a piece of cloth used as a stage of the play. The process of manufacturing condenses wisdom of labourers.

Firstly, shadow play is related to ancient literature. It performs literature vividly. In a word, shadow play is a kind of arts which deduce(演绎 ) the other art--literature.
Every shadow play records ，performs and inherits stories
such as ‘Pilgrimage to the west‘ (游记), ’A Dream of Red
Mansions’, etc .
Audiences of presentation also like stories because no one likes dull numbers or sophisticated figures. Shadow play teaches us that presentation should be likely to tell a wonderful story like it.

• Folk art is a culture created and enjoyed by the Chinese people for thousands of years. It is also the creation of the wisdom of the people. Many masterpieces of folk art have been inherited and preserved as "one of the wonders of China".

During the performance, the artists manipulated the opera characters behind the white curtain, while singing and telling stories with local popular tunes (sometimes in dialect), accompanied by percussion instruments and string music, which had a strong local flavor.

And now, China has applied to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) for a certification as an intangible cultural heritage. So as the constructer of china’s future, we are obliged to preserve the precious heritage.
