Dress Code
English education, Class A No. 24 Wang xi
Western people often pay much attention to wearing suitable clothes in different
circumstances. As globalization becomes popular in our life, we Chinese must know
something about the Dress Code in west in order to avoid making some stupid mistakes.
Western people held banquets and parties now and then and there will usually be a note
which expresses the host’s demand for wearing on the invitation.
Different types of dress code:
A. White Tie (or Ultra-formal )
It is the most formal occasion, such as medalparade, latenight dinner and so on. Men are
required to wear tailcoat with white vest, shirt, and bow tie. Leather belt are not used
instead of gallus. Women should wear long full-skirted evening grown.
B. Black Tie (or Formal)
It is the common dress code. Men should wear tuxedo, white shirt, black bow tie, black belt,
black socks and black shoes. One can rent all of these if he does not need it often. Women
should wear evening grown with small bag and beautiful shoes. Weather the jewellery is
true is not concerned, but it must be very shinny. Women should wear bracelet and heavy
makeup. Chinese women can wear midi as well.
C. Black Tie Optional (or Creative Black Tie)
Men can wear tuxedo or dark formal suit without bow tie or tie. Meanwhile it’s better to
match a white shirt. Women can wear evening growns or dressy separates. It likes Type B.
Black Tie Optional can also be applied to formal occasions. However when “optional” is
added ,men do not need to wear tuxedo. Black suit is the best choice. When “creative” is
added, that means you can increase some fashion decoration based on the traditional dark
suit.
D. Semi-formal (or Cocktail)
Men wears dark suits and women wears short dress or exquisite suits, which is suitable for
the semiformal occasions such as wine parties and weddings. The Cocktails are always held
at 16:00 to 19:00 .People can wear like the day time. But the material quality is important.
It better to wear velvet clothes.
E. Dressy Casual (or Smart Casual)
Dressy can be defined as dressed in an Exquisite way. Smart is widely used in English, it
can be replaced by shrewd, perky, handsome, lively, cheesy and fashionable. While Casual
wear means plain clothes. Therefore, this kind of dressing is neither casual nor formal ,but
it should be shrewd, not only elegant and decent but also fashionable and trendy.
F. Business Casual
It refers that you can wear business casual. It is suitable for the informal and a little optional
occasions. Men needn’t wear suits and tie either. Business casual are not the sportswear.
Jeans, sneakers, T-shirts are not included.
G. Casual (or Informal)
If you see this in you invitation note ,that means you can wear in the way that you like. But
you should avoid shorts or sandal too. If you can show your particularly style, it’s very good.
Analysis:
Western people pay lots attention to their clothes in different occasions. It’s a part of
western culture. They think that wearing the appropriate clothes shows their polite and
respect to the host, meeting or night dress can make the party more magnificent and formal.
If you wear a casual clothes at those occasions, people will put strangers eyes on you and
you’ll feel awkward. There were also complex dress code in China centuries ago such as in
Qing dynasty. After Qing dynasty, that was abandoned for a long time. But now, as we
Chinese are more and more national, we adopted the western dress code. So learning these
dress code above is necessary and important.
