综合C级:第一篇Telling Tales about People(综合C)One of the most common types of nonfiction, and one that many people enjoy reading, is stories about people's lives. These stories fall into three general categories: autobiography, memoir, and biography. An autobiography is the story of a person's life written by himself or herself. Often it begins with the person's earliest recollections and ends in the present. Autobiography writers may not be entirely objective in the way they present themselves. However, they offer the reader a good look at the way they are and what makes them that way. People as diverse as Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies of other writers, such as James Joyce, have written thinly fictionalized accounts of their lives. These are not autobiographies, but they are very close to it.Memoirs, strictly speaking, are autobiographical accounts that focus as much on the events of the times as on the life of the author. Memoir writers typically use these events as backdrops for their lives. They describe them in detail and discuss their importance. Recently, though, the term memoir seems to be becoming interchangeable with autobiography. A memoir nowadays may or may not deal with the outside world.Biographies are factual accounts of someone else's life. In many senses, these may be the hardest of the three types to write. Autobiography writers know the events they write about because they lived them. But biography writers have to gather information from as many different sources as possible. Then they have to decide which facts to include. Their goal is to present a balanced picture of a person, not one that is overly positive or too critical. A fair, well-presented biography may take years to research and write.1. This passage is mostly about _______.A) the characteristics of autobiographies, memoirs, and biographiesB) famous autobiographiesC) why biography can be difficult to writeD) differences between autobiographies and memoirs2. Helen Keller wrote _______.A) a memoir B) an autobiographyC) a work of fiction D) a biography3. Autobiography writers are not always objective because they _______.A) feel they have to make up details to make their books sellB) constantly compete with biography writersC) want to present themselves in a good lightD) have trouble remembering the good times4. The writer introduces each category in the passage by _______.A) defining itB) giving an exampleC) explaining why it is hard to writeD) telling when people first began writing it5. Diverse means _______.A) able to swim in deep water B) similar or alikeC) varied or different D) enjoying poetry第一篇讲述关于人们的故事最普遍的非小说类文学作品类型之一就是一些描述人们生活的故事,并且很多人喜欢阅读这类作品。

A(2012·沈阳四校协作体月考)I'm a volunteer for The American Diabetes (糖尿病) Association(ADA)。
I am on the planning committee for a one。
day cycling event called “Tour de Cure”。
It’s sponsored by the ADA and the profits(利润)of this event are used for diabetes research and program funding。
While I was talking to people about our “Tour de Cure” event in downtown Denver one day, I met a young boy wearing a red hat from Oklahoma named Jack。
I think he was 10—11 years old。
It was the jar of red rubber wrist bands (The American Diabetes Association diabetes awareness wrist bands) that caught Jack’s eye。
These are the bands we give out to people who have diabetes, who have a family member who has diabetes or to those people who know someone who has diabetes.People wear these for a variety of reasons: in memory of a loved one,to promote diabetes awareness and to show support for people who have diabetes. Jack walked towards me eyeing the jar and then he said,“Can I have one of those?" So,I replied to Jack, “Do you have someone in your family who has diabetes?” Jack said, “No,but I know someone who has diabetes。

C."Wanna buy a body?" That was the opening line of more than a few phone calls I got from self-em ployed photographers when I was a photo editor at U.S. News. Like many in the mainstream press , I wanted to separate the world of photographers into "them", who trade in pictures of bodies or ru n after famous people like Princess Diana, and "us", the serious news people. But after 16 years in that role, I came to wonder whether the two worlds were easily distinguishable.Working in the reputable world of journalism, I told photographers to cover other people's difficultlife situations. I justified marching into moments of sadness, under the appearance of the reader's right to know. I worked with professionals talking their way into situations or shooting from behin d police lines. And I wasn't alone. In any American town, after a car crash or some other horrible i ncident when ordinary people are hurt or killed, you rarely see photographers pushing past rescue workers to take photos of the blood and injuries. But you are likely to see local newspaper and tele vision photographers on the scene –and fast…How can we justify doing this? Journalists are taught to separate, doing the job from worrying abo ut the consequences of publishing what they record. Repeatedly, they are reminded of a news-busi ness saying: Leave your conscience in the office, A victim may lie bleeding, unconscious, or dead. Your job is to record the image (图象). You're a photographer, not an emergency medical worker. You put away your feelings and d ocument the scene. But catastrophic events often bring out the worst in photographers and photo editors. In the first m inutes and hours after a disaster occurs, photo agencies buy pictures. They rush to obtain the rights to be the only one to own these shocking images and deathis usually the subject. Often, an agency buys a picture from a local newspaper or an amateur photographer and puts it up for bid by major magazines. The most sought-after special pictures command tens of thousands of dollars through b idding contests.I worked on all those stories and many like them. When they happen, you move quickly: buying, d ealing, trying to beat the agencies to the pictures. Now, many people believe journalists are the hypocrites(伪君子)who need to be brought down, and it's our pictures that most anger others. Readers may not believ e, as we do, that there is a distinction between clear-minded "us" and mean-spirited "them". In too many cases, by our choices of images as well as how we get them, we prove our readers right.16. The writer never got an offer for a photograph of a dead person.A. RightB. (36)More about Alzheimer's DiseaseScientists have developed skin tests that may be used in the future to identify people with Alzheimer's disease1 and may ultimately allow physicians to predict who is at risk of getting this neurological disorder. The only current means of diagnosing the disease in a living patient is a long and expensive series of tests that eliminate every other cause of dementia."Since Alois Alzheimer described the disease nearly a century ago, people have been trying to find a way to accurately diagnose it in its early stages2," said Patricia Grady, acting director3 of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland."This discovery, if confirmed, could prove a big step forward in our efforts to deal with and understand the disease."Alzheimer's is the single greatest cause4 of mental deterioration in older people, affecting between 2. 5 million and 4 million people in the United States alone5. The devastating disorder gradually destroys memory and the ability to function, and eventually causes death.6 There is currently no known treatment for the disease.Researches discovered that the skin cells of Alzheimer' s patients have defects that interfere with their ability to regulate the flow of potassium in and out of the cells. The fact that the cell defects are present in the skin suggests that7 Alzheimer's results from physiological changes throughout the body, and that dementia may be the first noticeable effect of these changes as the defects affect the cells in the brain, scientists said. The flow of potassium is especially critical in cells responsible for memory formation8. The scientists also found two other defects that affect the cells' supply of calcium, another critical element. One test developed by researches calls for9 growing skin cells in a laboratory culture and then testing them with an electrical detector to determine if the microscopic tunnels that govern the flow of potassium are open. Open potassium channels create a unique electrical signature.A spokesman for the Alzheimer's Association said that if the validity of the diagnostic test can be proven it would be an important development, but cautioned that other promising tests for Alzheimer's have been disappointing.10词汇:neurological adj. 1.The newly developed skin tests may be used in the future to allow doctors toA cure those with Alzheimer's disease.B discover the cause of Alzheimer's disease.C predict who might get Alzheimer's disease.D find the consequences of Alzheimer's disease.2.The passage indicates that Alzheimer's is a diseaseA common to people, old and young.B not costly to be cured.C easy to be handled.D not easy to be diagnosed.3.Which of the following statements about the Alzheimer's disease is NOT true?A It was so named because Alois Alzheimer first described it.B It is the greatest cause of mental deterioration in older people.C It can gradually destroy memory and eventually cause death.D There are many ways to deal with and cure the disease now.4.What is the relationship between Alzheimer's and dementia?A Dementia is one of the signs of Alzheimer's.B Alzheimer's is one of the causes of dementia.C They are two completely different diseases.D They are similar defects of the human brain.5. The last paragraph implies that the diagnostic testA will not be as promising as others.B is a very important development.C may not be proven valid smoothly.D will surely be disappointing in the end.答案与题解:1.C 第一段中谈到试验的最终目的在于 ultimately allow physicians to predict who is at risk of getting this neurological disorder,所以只有 C 项符合题意。
Passage Two (The Tourist Trade Contributes Absolutely Nothing to Increasing Understanding between Nations)The tourist trade is booming. With all this coming and going, you'd expect greater understanding to develop between the nations of the world. Not a bit of it! Superb systems of communication by air, sea and land make it possible for us to visit each other’s countries at a moderate cost. What was once the ‘grand tour’, reserved for only the very rich,is now within everyb ody’s grasp? The package tour and chartered flights are not to be sneered at。
Modern travelers enjoy a level of comfort which the lords and ladies on grand tours in the old days couldn't have dreamed of。
But what’s the sense of this mass exchange of popula tions if the nations of the world remain basically ignorant of each other? Many tourist organizations are directly responsible for this state of affairs. They deliberately set out to protect their clients from too much contact with the local population. The modern tourist leads a cosseted, sheltered life. He lives at international hotels, where he eats his international food and sips his international drink while he gazes at the natives from a distance. Conducted tours to places of interest are carefully censored。

1. Harry Potter is mentioned in the passage, because scientists A can now make an invisible cloak of the same kind as he uses. B try to make an invisible cloak of the same kind as he uses. C try to invent a device similar in idea to the invisible cloak he uses. D know that it is possible to make an invisible cloak of the same kind.2. What is true of microwaves? A Their wavelengths are shorter than those of visible light. B Their wavelengths arc longer than those of visible light. C They are different from visible light as they are a kind of radiant energy. D They are visible to the human eye.3. What is NOT true of the invisibility device? A It is made of a special material with unusual ability. B Microwaves bounce off it when they strike it. C Microwaves pass through it when they strike it. D It bends the microwaves all the way around until they reach the opposite side.4. What does the word “coaster” mean in the passage? A A disk or plate placed under a drinking glass to prot ect a table top. B A vessel engaged in coastal trade. C A roller coaster. D A resident of a coastal area.5. Harry Potter's invisibility cloak doesn't have any real competition yet, because A scientists have not found out how his cloak works. B the cloaking device is a total failure.C the cloaking device works only for microwaves.D the cloaking device works only for visible light.
该段第三句说,微波与可见光一样都是一种辐射能,所以C的说法是错误的,不能选择;根据该段第一句: with waves of light taht the human eye can see和第三句: Like visible light 可以得知D是错误的说法,也不能选择。
3. B 第四段第三句说,当微波到装置表面,very few bounce off it。
Coaster
