Unit 1Active reading

My family could barely get by on my small income from driving a cab. One late night I responded to a call for a cab ride. To my surprise, when I arrived at the address, I found it was a frail old lay who was awaiting me. After she got into the cab, I engaged her in conversation. I learnt that she was going to the hospice. Her doctor said she didn’t have very long. The old lady told me to drive through the downtown area. She pointed at some old buildings, telling me those were the places where she used to work or live. When the cab finally pulled up in front of the hospice, I didn’t accept her fare. In the rest of the day, I was lost in thought. Though I had to make a living, I lived not for the sole purpose of surviving. When circumstances looked gloomy, the small favour I had done could be a candle light. However faint the light was, it managed to warm up a soul and ennobled me as well. I did take pride in that small favour.Theme-Related Writing▆Do one of the following writing tasks after class.1)Suppose you were Frannie, the head waitress, in Text A. However, our worries were gradually removed one week later. Smiling and hard-working, Stevie won over all our trucker regulars as well as us employees.Later we learnt that Stevie badly needed the job because the money he earned made it possible for his mother and him to live together; otherwise he would be sent to a group home. So you can imagine how worried Stevie was when he had to take sick leave for heart surgery. He was afraid that he would lose his job. After the operation, in the week before he returned, he called 10 times to make sure that he could still have the job back. At that time, what concerned me most was how Stevie could handle the huge medical bills. But something happened which completely caught me unawares. Our regular customers, those warm-hearted truckers, were so generous that they, together with their companies, contributed over $10,000 for Stevie. That Thanksgiving Day was a big day when Stevie was back to work and when the money was presented to Stevie as a surprise gift. I cried a bit while people were cheering for the occasion. Now, Stevie is still working here. Our boss thinks that Stevie is the best worker he has ever hired. (240 words)▆Sample Essay for Task 2:Should We Offer Seats to Elderly People on the Bus During Rush Hours?I am amazed to read what a blogger says about offering bus seats to the elderly. He claims that “it’s the young who need it more” because they go to work early in the morning and feel exhausted after a day’s work. The blogger also argues that it is unfair to offer seats to the elderly since they already enjoy free rides, and further suggests that during rush hours senior citizens be denied such treatment.I could never bring myself to agree with the blogger. Taking good care of the elderly is a universally accepted standard of conduct. In my opinion, offering seats to our elders is not just an indication of good manners; it is a moral issue. I always consider it my moral obligation to help others. Yes, you may feel comfortable for a while by remaining in your seat, but you will lose your character and moral values in the long run.Respecting the elderly is also our social convention. It is precisely out of our love and respect for the elderly that such special benefits as free rides are offered to them. No one can deprive senior citizens of their right to go out by bus at any time they like, and what’s more, we should make sure that they get special care when the bus is fully packed with passengers.Caring for the elderly and being taken care of can be a mutually satisfying experience for everyone involved. It is through performing such small acts as offering seats to the needy that we learn to contribute to the building of a harmonious society. (268 words)。

When I was dating in high school and into my 20s and 30s, it was a serious no, no for a girl even to call a boy or a woman to call a man on the telephone. It just wasn’t done. Your parents would tell you. “Nice girls don’t call boys. Boys call them.”But they didn’t really have to tell you that. The girls wouldn’t call you anyhow. In those days a strict unwritten code governed how young men and women behaved toward each other. Member of the opposite sex never gave each other clothes as gifts, not even a sweater. Well maybe a necktie or a pair of gloves. Anything else was considered much too personal. Good book. Nice wallet. Nothing more intimate than that. Young men and women certainly never took overnight trips to the beach or anywhere else, even with their steadies and the code word said, “D on’t call him. He’s supposed to call you.”Today all those taboos(禁忌) are history. My advice in meeting people and especially in talk between the sexes is to learn as much as you can about the other person as early in the conversation as possible. Engage them in areas that you’re interested in and stick to your natural conversational style. If you’re a witty bantering(诙谐) sort of talker, see if she is too. If you’re a woman who is on the serious side, see if he is. If you like politics, or sports or movies, or all of the above, see if he does. If he or she is not like you, and isn’t interested in the subjects that interest you, excuse yourself politely and then move on. There’s bound to be someone else in the room that’s more fun for you to talk to.1.The best title of the passage is ______.A.Talk Between the SexesB.Dating with the Opposite SexC.Gifts Given to the Opposite SexD.Topics for Talks with the Opposite Sex2.According to the passage, what suggestion is given by the writer?A. A girl may call a boy for dating on the telephone.B. A man may find a woman of the same sort to talk to.C. A woman may not give a man a sweater as a gift.D. According to the passage, which of the following objects may not be given as agift between members of the opposite sex?A. A dictionaryB. A wallet.C. A necktieD. A T-shirtBEvery person has an ecological(生态的) or environmental “footprint”. At the most basic level, we all need enough productive land to produce food and fiber and enough clean water to drink, wash and irrigate. We also need enough land to supply energy for heat and cooking, provide some sort of employment, and dispose of our wastes. As people’s lifestyles expand, so do their footprints. In the industrialized world, we need more land to support our more protein-rich diet, and to supply resources to build our homes, schools, factories, shopping centers and offices. We also need materials to supply the production and consumption of consumer goods that make up the bulk of our economic activity. In the United States, the average ecological footprint is the largest in the world---some five hectares(公顷). As large as the United States is,ecologically productive land is limited, so as US population expands, per capita(人均) availability of ecological land decreases. In 1995, the United States had only about 2.8 hectares of ecologically productive land per person, leaving a deficit (缺额) of roughly 2.2 hectares. To support the typical American lifestyle, the US has to import products from (and sometimes export wastes to) other areas. On a global scale, there is only about 1.5 hectares of ecologically productive land per person. If everyone in the world had a footprint equal to that of an American, we would need over two more planets to support us all today. At current growth rates, we would need five more planet Earths to support the world’s population in 2050.1.in the passage, the “footprint” is used to stand for ______.A.the influence people have on the earthB.the footmark people leave on the earthC.the productive land people need on the earthD.the consumption of consumer goods on the earth2.As people’s lifestyles expend, so do their footprints, because ______.A.people demand more productive land to support their rising living standardB.people in industrialized countries produce more wastesC.people occupy more living space as their lifestyles expandD.people consume more protein-rich food for more energy3.Which of the following statements is true?A.In 1995, every American has 2.8 hectares land.B.No enough land is shared in the US.C.The US depends on other countries for products.D.No other country has as large ecological footprint as the US.4.According to the passage, which of the following does the writer imply?A.There is too little productive land per person in the US.B.American “footprint” is closely related to the American lifestyle.C.We should exploit some other planets.D.Population growth will increase the average ecological footprint.5.What is the best title of the passage?A. The American ProblemB. the American LandC. The American LifestyleD. The American Footprint”CWhen Spain and Portugal began their colonial expansion, northern Europe was largely a backwater. Shorter growing seasons limited grain production, so the area lacked the caloric(热量的) resources to undertake significant exploration and conquest. But when Spanish explorers brought the potato back from South America, everything changed. Potatoes grew well in cooler climates, and provided lots of calories. With more food available, population increased rapidly in England, Holland, Germany, Poland and Sweden. When those countries faced shortages of farmland, jobs, and other resources due to population growth, they experienced massive out-migration, primarily to the northern US.Because of this influx(涌入). US population grew roughly 35% every decade from 1800 to 1860. This caused a huge population shift. In 1800, the South was home to half the US population, but by 1860, it represented just over one-third.In 1847 the Union comprised 15 slave and 14 free states, so southerners maintained control of the US Senate, But as immigration fueled western expansion, new states began to arise. The South tried desperately to ward this off. It stonewalled(阻碍,妨碍) the Homestead Act and the transcontinental railroad, because those would promote western settlement. And it attempted to create new states where southern institutions could flourish. In the 1840’s and 1850’s, southerners led or sponsored three attempted invasions of Cub, three efforts to seize Nicaragua, and one invasion of Baja California. They also tried to purchase the northern third of Mexico.None of these efforts were successful, nor could they offset(抵消) the cruel forces of population growth. By 1860, slave states were a minority, and political power had shifted north. By 1861, southerners knew they had only two choices. Either surrender slavery, or fight and win a war of secession( 分离).1.We can infer from the passage that ______.A.since the potato was introduced into Europe, the population rose rapidlyB.growing potato needed a lot of farmland, but Europe lacked farmlandC. a large number of European people immigrated to Northern America becausepotato was originally grown thereD.Spanish people went to South America because they wanted to learn how togrow potato2.According to the passage, US population increase rapidly, ______.A.because more food was availableB.because population death rate decreasedC.so the Southerners occupied fewer percentage of US populationD.so American people faced shortages of job opportunities3.In line 3 Para.4. “Ward off” can best be replaced by______.A. fightB. treatC. preventD. oppose4. According to the passage, we could get a conclusion that______.A. immigrants from Europe waged the American Civil WarB. the colonial expansion was the direct reason for the American Civil WarC. food shortage in the South caused the American Civil WarD. potato introduced into Europe led to the American Civil WarDThe sudden emergence of “Y2K” in headlines around the world is, very simply, shorthand for the coming transition to the Year 2000 in the western calendar and the problems that might and /or are likely to occur as a result of the date change. Virtually all computers and automated systems were formulated (用公式表达) using the solar-based calendar. However, they have only been using two digits in the year field in the computer code that tells the computer or automated system what to do. When there is a four-digit change in the calendar at midnight on December 31, 1999. many computers and automated system may malfunction unless the year field is fixed. The computer or system may just stop working or inaccurately process date, thinking the year is 1900. This could cause a lot of problems if electrical power grids(系统网络), water systems, energy supply systems, medical devices, shipping ports and airports fail or have to be closed. Most people don’t sit around thinking about how or where their electricity, water and other basic supplies come from. Most people don’t really think about how telephones, medical equipment or home appliances work. Microchips are embedded(嵌入) in just about every automated device or system we use today. Not all will be affected by Y2K, but many will and it is important to know which devices and systems are vulnerable(易受攻击的), fix the problem and test it again and again to make sure it will work.We see that computers and automated systems can do so much, and come to rely on them for the most basic services. Most of us have probably never thought about how a computer cannot think on its own like a human and what that means, Many computers and automated systems are programmed to only recognize 99 years. Unless these Y2K problems are repaired, some systems will malfunction because the computer is not intelligent enough to know what year “00”stands for. Those computers and systems have to be told not to shut down, but keep working onto 2000.1.According to the passage, what is Y2K?A.It is the headline of the newspaper article.B.It is the shorthand for the Year 2000C.It is the problem that computers may malfunction at midnight on Jan. 1,2000.D.It is a king virus that may cause computers and automated systemsmalfunction.2.According to the passage, many computers and automated systems probably stopworking at the midnight on Dec. 31, 1999 because ______.A.they don’t recognize year 1999.B.They don’t recognize year 2000.C.They are stopped for being repaired.D.They are stopped for being reset.3.According to the passage, which of the following is most probably not the casedue to Y2K?A. No water supply.B. Elevators out of order.C. Airlines canceledD. Shopping center closed.4. It is implied in the passage that ______.A. medical equipment work under the control of computersB. electricity comes from the power stationC. most people don’t realize that the computer is closely connected with their livesD. people should know how telephones work5. Generally speaking, according to the passage, Y2K problems may be solved by ______.A. using four digits in the year field in the computer codeB. telling the computer to go on working at the midnight on Jan. 1, 2000C. repairing the computer at the midnight on Jan. 1, 2000D. none of the above.V.Translation: 20%1. Activity I Story T ellingIn Hanyang of Hubei Province, there is an ancient Guqin Terrace. Its touching tale began more than 2000 years ago, when a man named Y uBoya (俞伯牙) was famous for his zither筝(guqin) playing, but was always disappointed that no one understood his music. On the night of one Mid-autumn Festival, Y uBoya, enjoying the scenery from a riverboat, started to play a tune. When he finished, cheers from a firewood gatherer, called ZhongZiqi(钟子期) , took him by surprise. After inviting him on board, Y uBoya decided to test ZhongZiqi's knowledge by asking for the origin of his zither (guqin) and the meaning of two songs. ZhongZiqi answered perfectly. Knowing that he had finally found a friend who truly underetood his music, Y uBoya proposed to become sworn brothers . They also agreed to meet again one year later. When that long awaited day finally came, ZhongZiqi was not seen, despite Y uBoya's calling on the zither(guqin). So Y uBoya went to search for him. On the shore, He saw a grave that strangely faced the river. It turned out to be ZhongZiqi's grave. According to his last wish, the grave was built along the river so that ZhongZiqi could listen to Y uBoya's songs even after his death. Deeply touched, Y uBoya played a final heart-wrenching tune before breaking the zither (guqin) and promising never to play again because he had lost the only one who truly understood his music.D. What’s up?Paula: Well, as you know, I’m going on vacation — for two weeks. Do you think you could water my plants while I’m away?Leticia: Sure. No problem.Paula: Great. They need wa ter twice a week. There’s one plant in the bedroom and one in the kitchen.Leticia: OK … say, how about your dog? Should I feed her, too?Paula: No, that’s OK. I’m putting her in a kennel.Leticia: All right, then, I’ll water your plants … and … oh, how ab out the mail? Should I pick it up for you?Paula: Actually, I’ve already asked the mailman to stop mail delivery. Thanks for asking, though. Leticia: Well, have a great trip!Paula: Thanks, Leticia. I really appreciate your help.Leticia: My pleasure. Wait a second. I don’t have any keys to your place.Paula: Oh, that’s right. Will you be home around 8 tonight?Leticia: Yeah, I think so.Paula: OK, I’ll drop by … I’ll give you the keys then.Leticia: OK! See you tonight. Bye!Paula: Bye! Thanks again!Audio Track 3-1-3/Audio Track 3-1-4/Audio Track 3-1-5Ashley: Wow, Jun, you look relaxed. Did you enjoy the long weekend?Jun: I sure did, Ashley. Actually, I took a big trip.Ashley: Over the weekend? We only had three days off!Jun: Yep, but I visited four countries in three days.Ashley: What?Jun: I love to fly. You might say I’m an “airplane freak.”Ashley: That’s interesting. … Where did you go?Jun: I visited Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines.Ashley: Sounds like you were busy!Jun: I was. I had only four hours in Seoul, so I had to finish my shopping very quickly. Sometimes I had to run between connecting flights.Ashley: Wait a minute! What about your baggage? Didn’t you have to wait for it?Jun: No, I didn’t have much: only one carryon b ag. It just fits in the overhead compartment. Ashley: So let me get this straight … you spent your weekend in an airplane? Flying around? Jun: Basically, yes. I fly standby.Ashley: Standby?Jun: Yes. As a standby passenger, I don’t have a reservation. At the last minute they let me know if there is a seat available. They give me a boarding pass and I get on.Ashley: All this flying must be expensive!Jun: Well, I’m an airline employee. I’m a sales representative for Twin Star Airlines. So I know most of the flight attendants and I can almost fly for free.Ashley: Lucky you!Audio Track 3-1-6Matt: Have you done all the errands?Tina: No, I haven’t finished them yet.Matt: You don’t have to go to the post office. I’ve canceled the mail delivery.Tina: Well, I’ve picked up the plane tickets. But I haven’t taken the dog to the kennel. What about you? Have you washed the dishes?Matt: No, I haven’t cleaned the kitchen. But I watered the plants, and I’ve given our keys to Mrs. Smith.Tina: What about your suitcase? Did you get the traveler’s checks at the bank yesterday?Steve: Yes, I did. And I paid the bills, too.Jenna: Well, I changed our voicemail message, and I confirmed all of our flights.Steve: Great! Let’s remember to give the house keys to Mr. Jacobsen so he can come in and water our plants.Jenna: This afternoon I have to stop the mail delivery at the post office.Steve: And could you please take the dog to the kennel?Jenna: Oh, I hate that! He always looks so scared.Steve: And this time, let’s remember to empty the trash before we leave.Jenna: And we’ll give aw ay all the fresh food. Last year, there were black tomatoes and green meat in the refrigerator after our vacation.Steve: I made a note to myself: unplug the computer!Jenna: And I promise to turn off all the lights. The electric bill was terrible last time.Steve: Maybe we should write a list. Then we can use it again on our next vacation.Audio Track 3-1-8/Audio Track 3-1-9Tips for better packingAre you planning to travel for a weekend or several months, around the country or overseas? Here are some tips to help you pack your bags.1. Pre-trip planning: • Make a packing list to help you remember everything. Review it about a week before your trip. • Plan a time to go shopping for things you need for your trip. • Don’t pack the night before you travel. You will forget things when you’re in a hurry.2. Tagging luggage: • Before packing, put name tags on valuable items like cameras and cell phones. • Make sure that each piece of luggage, including carry-ons, has a luggage tag on it. • If you know your hote l’s address and phone number, put it on your luggage tags.3. Saving space: • Pack small items (socks, belts, etc.) inside your shoes. It uses the empty space and helps the shoes to hold their shape. • Pack your clothes in plastic bags. • If you are travel ing with a friend, plan your packing together. Share your alarm clock, toothpaste, or first aid kit.4. Your carry-on bag: • The most important items for your trip (passport, plane tickets, traveler’s checks, credit cards, keys, etc.) should go in your carry-on bag. Always keep them with you. • Keep your carryon bag small and light. Put bulky, heavy items in your check-in luggage. • Use soft bags, such as backpacks or shoulder bags, for carry-ons. They fit easily under the airplane seat, or into small overhead compartments.5. Other ideas: • Bring an empty bag for souvenirs from the trip. • Remember to pack a few rubber bands, safety pins and plastic bags. They can be very useful. • Bring some snacks such as nuts, cookies or dried fruit. You can eat them if you don’t have time for a meal. Sharing food is a great way to meet other travelers.Audio Track 3-1-10/Audio Track 3-1-11/Audio Track 3-1-12Going solo is the way to go!How do you usually travel? Do you go with a close friend or a group of friends? Do you join a tour group? Do you travel with your family?Have you ever imagined “going solo”? In the mid 1990s, it was estimated that 9 million Americans were planning a summer vacation alone. Since then, the number of solo travelers has increased. You may think that traveling alone would be scary or boring. Well, according to people who do it, that’s not exactly true. Solo travelers often have positive experiences: they make new friends, get to know themselves better, and can make their own schedule. There are many different things you can do on a vacation alone. Some solo travelers use the timeto learn or practice a sport such as golf, mountain climbing, or scuba diving. Others go and stay on a ranch and learn how to ride a horse. You can pretend to be a cowboy or a cowgirl for a day!You may not believe this, but some travelers like to study on their vacation. They even go to “vacation college” at a university or join a research team as a volunteer worker. It’s hard but satisfying work. You can “play scientist” for a week or two while you help someone with their project. For solo travelers of different ages and genders, there are many travel options. There are tours for women only and for people over the age of 60. And, of course, there are trips for singles who are looking for romance. One company offers trips that focus on fine dining —there is time for sightseeing during the day and for sharing a delicious meal with new friends at night. The next time you take a trip somewhere, why don’t you consider goin g solo?Bon voyage!Speaking & CommunicationAudio Track 3-1-131. We still have two hours befor e the flight. We can do it at the airport.B: What a relief! Let’s go.Audio Track 3-1-17We’ve decided to take these six items: the tent, some bottled water, the lighter, a map, a compass and a cell phone. The reasons are as follows.One. We’ll take the tent for shelter. We all agree a tent is ideal for camping in the forest.Two. We’ll also take some bottled water as we cannot be sure if the water in the forest is safe to drink.Three. We think it is very useful to bring a lighter. We can make a fire for barbecuing food and to keep us warm.Four. We all think a map is a must. We will need it to plan our route in and out of the forest. Five. We think it best to take a compass as it will help us navigate which way we are walking. We don’t want to get lost.Last and most important of all, we agree we’d better take a cell phone. We would use it to call someone if we encountered an emergency —it’s better to be safe than sorry.Video CourseVideo Track 3-1-1Dave: Before going on a trip I pay the bills, I empty the trash, and I give a house key to a friend. Alejandra: Before I leave on a trip, I have to confirm travel plans and make sure that I have requested a vegetarian meal.Thallus: Before leaving for a long trip, I turn off the lights, I turn off my heater, I give my keys to my roommate, and I water my plant.Video Track 3-1-2Julianna: The funniest story of my traveling experience was when I came to the US for the first time by myself. They lost my luggage and I didn’t speak a word of English. I had t o use my hands to explain myself. People understood what I meant and they helped me out.Catherine: My recent trip to Africa was one of the most amazing trips of my life. This was my second trip to Tanzania, Africa. We visited a lot of villages, some very remote that we had to travel by helicopter. In Tanzania, it’s very different from America so there are no maps. So, even traveling in a helicopter, we didn’t really know where we were going to go. We didn’t really know the village names, so we just kind of had no destination and we got in the helicopter and just flew around. And if we saw some animals or some rooftops of hut houses, we said, “Let’s go there” and we just kind of landed.Dennis: I have a lot of funny experiences on the airline as a flight attendant. But one of the funniest I could recall was, there was this passenger who had a toupee and one of my flight attendants was serving … I think … she was serving food … and she had this tray. And suddenly turbulence happened, and she lost her balance …and her hand landed on the guy’s head, who had a toupee. When she caught her balance again, the toupee kind of shifted, so his sideburns were onhis forehead. While Sun-hee was talking to Mike on the phone, Claudia and Tara had some trouble preparing for the trip. First, Tara couldn’t find her bag and then Claudia didn’t know where her ticket was. Things got worse when Claudia couldn’t find her money and cell phone. But Sun-hee helped them out. She seemed to be totally relaxed because she had already finished getting ready. Sun-hee told Mike about all the errands she had done earlier that day. She had confirmed her flight, got traveler’s checks, changed her voicemail message, and paid the bills. Finally, Tara and Claudia were ready to go and Sun-hee checked to be sure they had everything. However, after they left, Sun-hee soon came running back in. Why? She had forgotten to take her ticket and passport!。
